Would you steal sand from the beach? (Lighthearted)

We need some sand for these weight things we got to attach to the legs of our gazebo. Apparently they come empty so you need something to fill them with. I suggested going to the local beach and using sand from there rather than the further expense of buying sand or something else.. DH says no we can't do that as it's illegal to steal sand , which according to google is technically true, but still, is it really that big of a deal? Does anyone care? Would a police officer really arrest me for stealing some sand? 😆 (as title says this is lighthearted)

Are you regretting starting this thread, OP 😅👏🏼

I hate the expression "I bet you're fun at parties".

It's just used to shut people down and make them feel shit.

It's normally used by folk on here who have had something obvious pointed out to them by a number of other posters, but instead of saying 'didn't think of it like that, fair point', they get defensive.

musixa · 29/05/2023 09:28

OP, read the story of Hallsands - a coastal village in Devon that was washed away because tons of shingle was dredged from the shoreline. There's an excellent book about it called 'Sisters Against the Sea'.

dont do it
it is illegal
you can buy it

UWhatNow · 29/05/2023 09:30

some on MN really seem to take life too seriously and literally get wound up over everything

I don’t see ‘wound up’ - I see people calmly explaining why your ‘lighthearted’ suggestion is a dick move and the wider consequences actually are serious. You sound like a teenager. But hey ho, keep putting laughing emojis over everything, it’ll be fine.

Heartsnrainbows · 29/05/2023 09:26

They sell bags of sand in pound shops. How tight do you have to be? 😂

It'd be less hassle as well, rather than dragging buckets/bags to the beach and trying to furtively get them back to your car

Get to a pound shop and buy the bloody stuff, then you don't have to be part of the problem when it comes to our beaches.

ODFODeary · 29/05/2023 09:31

Well that backfired
I don't really know what else you were expecting
It's definitely not 'lighthearted'

Not sure the OP will care @musixa , she'll be too busy 'howling' at how clever she is, whilst filling her bags with sand under a cloak of darkness tonight.

This thread is like a tin of Ronseal. I knew exactly what to expect from the title and it didn’t disappoint!

Remember the wooden Scotsman who knocked on his own head? Used to love him!

Ah I see the sanctimonious MN bullies are out in force again this morning.

QuintanaRoo · 29/05/2023 09:35

I wouldn’t do it as I am a rule abiding person. I get the point if everyone did it, etc.

but would it actually be environmentally damaging? Doesn’t sand get washed in and out with every tide. I can see the rule is needed to stop someone with a jcb setting up a business but I can’t really imagine people taking small amounts for personal use being an issue……mainly because 95% of people won’t be arsed to do it to save £3

LotsOfBalloons · 29/05/2023 08:56

So instead of admitting she's wrong/in light of everyone else onto he thread. She's "howling". Bet she's fun at parties 🤭. You can tell the level of conversation you'd get!

I saw a brilliant cartoon in the New Yorker recently. It showed a pack of wolves, all with raised heads and open mouths, clearly howling in unison at a full moon. To one side, a puzzled little cub is being told by an adult wolf, 'It doesn't have to mean anything. It's art'.

Because people disagree?

Crumbcatcher · 29/05/2023 09:40

How is this lighthearted? It's a question worth discussing, but it isn't lighthearted.

greenacrylicpaint · 29/05/2023 09:41

never take sand from a beach.
it's there to protect from coastal erosion.

buy sand or pebbles from a diy store.

or fill the base with water.

Paperlate · 29/05/2023 09:49

Meh, if I lived near a beach I'd go and get some a bag of sand.

polkadotdalmation · 29/05/2023 09:49

Plays sand would be cleaner

caringcarer · 29/05/2023 09:54

Just use water to weigh it down.

WillowtreeHouse · 29/05/2023 12:21

ODFODeary · 29/05/2023 09:39

Yes. Didn't you realise that disagreeing with someone on MN is bullying @ODFODeary? Not that it's a much overused term of course ...

MrsCatE · 29/05/2023 23:12

Hopefully, someone will already have referenced Mike Leigh's "Nuts in May" re nicking pebbles on the Beach.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 29/05/2023 08:59

Ooooo there are little sand hoppers in the sand you won't see. We took sand from the beach when we got married in a little tub, I dried it out in the oven and the little critters were like tiny shrimp 🍤 on the surface. I think you wouldn't be able to live with yourself hearing wee "help me" squeaks from your gazebo weights OP 😂😂

You got married in little tub 😮?! That’s definitely different!!
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist 😁)

ToeJammed · 30/05/2023 02:01

I once took a bucket full of sand from the beach op.
In my defence, I was only six at the time and on holiday.
Then my mum smacked my legs, because it spilled all over the clothes in the suitcase that I sneaked it into to bring home.
Then she confiscated my bucket and spade!
Mainly because I twotted my brother round the head with the spade.

From the beach.

This made me laugh (apart from the smack!)

Madness that you made the clothes dirtier so got a smack but only got your spade confiscated for assaulting your brother Grin

AirplaneFly · 30/05/2023 06:45

It’s not community minded to take a shared resource like sand. Would you take turf from the local park?
