What did you do for your 40th?

Mine is coming up and I can't decide what to do.

Funds are reasonable but we don't have childcare options so probably need to do something kid-friendly (both DC under 5).

What did you do? Grateful for any inspiration!

A weekend in Milan. I’m blessed as my birthday is always followed by a bank holiday weekend.

Spectre8 · 28/05/2023 21:59

Slept and netflix cos I was ill ...had planned to go shopping and then spa hotel overnight but had to move it

tourdefrance · 28/05/2023 21:59

Moved house about two weeks before!

Invited a few friends to pop in for lunch and cake with their kids if they were free. Some people said they'd come and didn't but three good friends did and that was enough.

InMySpareTime · 28/05/2023 22:30

I had a book swap party, everyone brought two books, one for me and one to swap.
Everyone left with a new book.
I ended up with about 50 books to add to my bookshelves.

MyMachineAndMe · 28/05/2023 22:43

Went for a short walk. We had plans but then I was ill that week and was only just feeling better on the day itself so we just went to a local beauty spot and had a nice stroll around the lake.

IaltagDhubh · 28/05/2023 22:59

Cleaned the house and bought myself some flowers. Sounds a bit sad, but it was a nice day. I’m really not into birthdays for myself.

Yellowcakestand · 28/05/2023 23:08

Had a joint party with my friend and hired a dj and a band. Had a great time

Tighginn · 28/05/2023 23:18

Lockdown with my narcissistic ex...

Berlinlover · 28/05/2023 23:27

I was single when I turned 40 and spent three lovely nights in Berlin.

lakesummer · 28/05/2023 23:29

I went on a h&s course for work, I don't particularly recommend it!

Whatyoutalkingabouteh · 28/05/2023 23:34

Mine was in lockdown and so disappointing. Was hoping to celebrate since but DP/family never rebooked what they had planned (and cancelled) and it’s just been forgotten. A few yrs prior I took DP on a city break abroad for his.

Nothing. Fuss about birthdays properly stops at age 21. Then ignore.

No no no. Celebrate each year! I'm so greatful for every year. I've lost people way too young.

Allrightmylover · 29/05/2023 00:58

I had a party on my actual birthday at home, about 25 people, then had cocktails out another night with women friends. DH paid for me to visit family in America and I spent two weeks there. He looked after the kids.

ChangedNameNotGay · 29/05/2023 01:03

Dh brought me to Paris for 3 days without dc. We had lunch in Les Deux Magots which was fantastic!

Fridayfreddie · 29/05/2023 01:29

Went for dinner with 12 friends followed by bar. Two had a drunken argument that that nearly ended in blows. It ruined the evening for everyone and we left early. I picked up the bill but received zero thanks from the fighters.

MinnieMountain · 29/05/2023 05:42

Went to Rome with DH. I was still napping following radiotherapy but it was amazing.
We’re taking 9yo DS this October.

MinnieMountain · 29/05/2023 05:45

If you have to take your DC, look at Woolley Grange hotel.

Hellenabe · 29/05/2023 05:50

Had a big, catered party at home. I hate being the centre of attention but wanted to show my children that they didn't need to be shy like me. It was great fun.

GuitarsUnderTheStars · 29/05/2023 06:05

My birthday and 2 of my friends birthdays are all within 6 days of each other. Our group of friends and our partners, kids and dogs all went for a weekend away. Hiking/long walks in the day and nice meals and lots of alcohol at night. We had a chef service come in and cook for us on 1 evening which was fab.

LlynTegid · 29/05/2023 06:31

I was in Madrid and went to the Prado.

Stellawella · 29/05/2023 06:40

We had moved house the weekend before so we had a load of friends over and just did a BBQ, lots of drink and cake in the afternoon.

JustDanceAddict · 29/05/2023 06:48

I had an evening party at home. DCs had a sleepover at grandparents (they were junior school age) w their cousin!!

IHeartGeneHunt · 29/05/2023 06:52

I had a week in North Wales with some of my family.

BCBird · 29/05/2023 06:53

Went to Bruges for a few days with mate.

CatMattress · 29/05/2023 06:57

Got covid and cried. Do not recommend.
