If your birthday is the 20th of the month...

How do you say your DOB?

I find myself saying 'the twentieth of the eighth, eighty two' as I think it would be confusing to say 'twenty eight, eighty two'.

Am I weird?

I would say 20th august 1982

tourdefrance · 28/05/2023 10:28

It’s not. But can’t you just say 20th May/June etc 1982?

Dodger101 · 28/05/2023 10:29

As far as I am aware everyone says it the same way as you do so the eighth of the eighth ninety three, the thirteenth of the fourth seventy nine.

MuffinToSeeHere · 28/05/2023 10:29

Surely you say 20th of August 1982 or which ever month you were actually born in. I often say the actual name of the month rather than the number when giving out my Date of birth, it's not like it's hard to work out the number of the month.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 28/05/2023 10:32

I think those who don’t have a 20 birthday don’t get it. Other dates you can say 14, 6, 81. With the 20th people constantly get it wrong if you are not really careful.

20, 8, 82 would lead to 28 and then a confused look.

I say “ the 20th” long pause “of the 8th” “1982”.

No we get it, we just don't understand why you can't say the name of the actual month?

KateyCuckoo · 28/05/2023 10:33

I could say the name of the month but I have come across the occasional person who doesn't know the corresponding number/month so I still end up having to clarify. Maybe that's their issue though.

They would be few and far between though surely and you'd have to correct far less often than if you just said the number? It would certainly lead to a lot less confusion over the phone especially if you just have the name of the month.

TeenDivided · 28/05/2023 10:36

I always say 'oh eight' for the month not just 'eight'

PucketyPuckPuck · 28/05/2023 10:36

If I say my DOB to soneone I say 'Fourteen Six Eighty Six'.

I've worked in a telephone role speaking to 100 people a day that had to tell me their DOB and most people would say it this way. Very few would say 'The Fourteenth of June Nineteen Eighty Six'

I can imagine it would be awkward though if your day of birth is the 20th, meaning you'd be more likely to say the full thing.

Lund · 28/05/2023 10:41

That is my DH birthday! Not the year but near enough. He says it how you suggest. I used to think this was weird and I just say 5, 6, 76 (not my actual birthday). But when I thought about it I realised it would be confusing if he said 20, 8 … Saying just numbers like this is a perfectly normal way of giving your DOB.

ICalledYouLastNightFromGlasgow · 28/05/2023 10:43

I always say the name of the month... is that the wrong thing to do? Surely people know the corresponding month and number of the month?

AnOKYearForTheRoses · 28/05/2023 10:44

I’m the 20th but of a month that’s October or later so I say twenty-ten-seventy-six.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 28/05/2023 10:45

I say 20th of the xxx of xxxx

Freeballing · 28/05/2023 10:49

Mine is the 2nd and I always say second. I always say it like the second of the sixth eighty three. I didn't know most people would just say 2 6 83.

MuddyBadge · 28/05/2023 10:53

Unlesss you're worried they might think you were born on the 28th day of the 82nd month of an unspecified year, I can't see how it could possibly be misconstrued.

StaySpicy · 28/05/2023 10:59

I don't have a 20th birthday but I still say "9th of the 6th, 89".

Badbudgeter · 28/05/2023 11:01

I’m a twenty and have never thought about this . I say 20 10 but if I was born earlier I’d say 20 zero etc. as that will be what they are writing down.

ChickenMacaroni · 28/05/2023 11:02

I would never use the numbers for the month... I say twenty, August, 1982. I didn't know saying twenty, eight, 82 was a thing!

cherrypied · 28/05/2023 11:02

If I were you I'd say twenty oh-eight nineteen eighty two.

Christmascracker0 · 28/05/2023 11:04

I don’t have a 20th birthday but I’m with you - I say “the eighth of the eighth, 1990” (not my real DOB but close 🤣)

TheInterceptor · 28/05/2023 11:05

Twenty, oh-eight, eighty-two.

TiredandLate · 28/05/2023 11:14

I say 20th of the 4th for the same reason as you. Plus, it's probably being typed into a computer so saying the numbers makes more sense to me than the month. As mentioned, some people wouldn't know 9 = September or whatever, it's more common than you'd think.

WandaWonder · 28/05/2023 11:17

The 20th of May 19-82 or whatever

Chewbecca · 28/05/2023 11:19

Oh yes, I do see your 'problem'. And it is limited to people born on 20th of Jan - Sep only.

I think I would use the 'say the zero' option, e.g. '20, oh-4, 75' option if I were you.
