If your birthday is the 20th of the month...

How do you say your DOB?

I find myself saying 'the twentieth of the eighth, eighty two' as I think it would be confusing to say 'twenty eight, eighty two'.

Am I weird?

OP posts:

20th of the xth xx - same as you OP!

I wouldn't say the month name. Don't know why - have never thought about it before!

I think those who don’t have a 20 birthday don’t get it. Other dates you can say 14, 6, 81. With the 20th people constantly get it wrong if you are not really careful.

20, 8, 82 would lead to 28 and then a confused look.

I say “ the 20th” long pause “of the 8th” “1982”.

Literally no one would ever just say the number 14 6 81.

QueSyrahSyrah · 28/05/2023 11:20

I take dates of birth over the phone very regularly and the vast majority of people use the '10th of the 6th, 1962' format, which works fine for birthdates on the 20th.

The person noting it down is very likely to be doing that numerically, so it follows to feed them the information numerically.

ChickenMacaroni · 28/05/2023 11:02

I would never use the numbers for the month... I say twenty, August, 1982. I didn't know saying twenty, eight, 82 was a thing!

Because it isn’t 😂

QueSyrahSyrah · 28/05/2023 11:22

@Tippexy I do if I'm just confirming my identity (so the person who's asked already has my DOB in front of them).

16 / 3 / 82 in that case, 16th of the 3rd, 82 if I'm dictating it to be noted down.

Literally no one would ever just say the number 14 6 81.

I once had a summer job where I was taking dates of birth over the phone. (And other data - I have strong views on how you should say your postcode also!)

Lots of people say 14, 6, 81.

To be honest I preferred it to 14th June 1981. After 5 hours on the phone my poor brain couldn’t remember if June was a month at all let alone what month of the year it was. And I am a mathematician so really really good at numbers!

EversoDisorganised · 28/05/2023 11:29

I thought the default was 23rd of the 7th, 1986. Don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say twenty three seven eighty six.

RuthW · 28/05/2023 11:32

Twenty pause month pause year

If just asked when bday is I say 20th of month.

Nutterjacks · 28/05/2023 11:32

Twentieth of the twelfth and then 78

Thatladdo · 28/05/2023 11:33

I say the date, the name of the month and omit the year 😆

AccountCreateUsername · 28/05/2023 11:34

I hope these aren’t real DOBs people are posting :)

Poppins2016 · 28/05/2023 11:38

I'd say 20th of August 1982.

For people who can't compute the month/number, I'd translate as two zero, zero eight, eighty two.

Poppins2016 · 28/05/2023 11:42

This is an interesting thread, as I've never come across anyone using the "twentieth of the eighth" format. Might it be a regional thing (I'm in the south east)?

FedUpWithTheNHS · 28/05/2023 11:43

I say 20 March or 20-03.

ICalledYouLastNightFromGlasgow · 28/05/2023 11:43

That's what I say too. I kind of assumed if you worked in a job where taking dates of birth was important you would know the months of the year.

kangaroopelicanartic · 28/05/2023 11:45

Mine's the 20th Jan.

I say "20th Jan 1983"

Patronising much? Hmm

DS was born on 20/01. I would still say his DoB was the 20th of January 20XX. Exactly the same as I'd say my own (non-20th) DoB.

Starlightandsandytoes · 28/05/2023 11:57

This is me but I’ve never thought of good. I just say 06 for the month or June.

Chewbecca · 28/05/2023 12:02

Tippexy · 28/05/2023 11:20

Literally no one would ever just say the number 14 6 81.

You are literally wrong. This is just how I say my DOB when doing security checks on the phone.

LoveHeartsFan · 28/05/2023 12:05

As PP, 20, oh-8, 82.

DH would say as per some other PP, 20th of the 8th, 82.

FluffytheGoldfish · 28/05/2023 12:05

It is much easier to just say the numerical form if is for data entry. I would only say the month if in conversation.
I'm not the 20th but the 30th so although it is not as difficult, you can still get people who are just listening to the numbers and not properly concentrating typing in 34 instead of 30 04. So I then to go for 30 zero 4 then the year in 2 or 4 digit form.

Mardiarse · 28/05/2023 12:08

Can you not add in the zero bit.
If I say my birthday numerically I just say it how I would write it
17 -04- 19xx
otherwise it’s 17th of April then year ?
Don’t see your problem really

MuffinToSeeHere · 28/05/2023 12:08

Chewbecca · 28/05/2023 12:02

You are literally wrong. This is just how I say my DOB when doing security checks on the phone.

But that's for security checks for people who presumably already have your date of birth so surely the op could also say 20 8 82 in this situation as they will be reading it off the information they already have.

Presumably the op was referring to situations where she was giving her dob for the first time in which case surely you'd say either the 20th of the 8th or the 20th of August, you wouldn't just say the numbers even if you weren't born on the 20th.

mayberra · 28/05/2023 13:19

I'd say twenty / oh-eight / eighty-two in one go

DappledThings · 28/05/2023 13:27

I would always say June or of the sixth. I would ever just say 6. Nothing to do with the 20th, I just think it sounds weird anyway.
