What's your favourite food from M&S?

When you don't feel like cooking?

I came across the thread about discontinued food from M&S and since I've never tried their ready meals, I'm keen to give them a shot for dinner.

M&S certainly isnt a store for anyone who is a foodie.

I find that anyone who self-describes as a 'foodie' usually tends to be an interminable bore.

Let me change foodie to cook then?
Better for you?

The majority is processed crap and they add sugar to make it edible

When Ocado switched from Waitrose to M&s the calories for a chicken in a bag (basically a roast chicken) shot through the roof as M&S use cheap ingredients and bulk with sugar.

M&S certainly isnt a store for anyone who is a foodie.

Do you mean the rotisserie chicken ? I’d say that no foodie would buy those anyway so you’re ruled out

I think M&S are great for bringing a good range of base ingredients to the market instead of people having to rely on specialist shops - things like ketcap manis , good paprika , pasta , different salts , oils etc which qualifies it as a good resource for foodies

As per above I can’t think of anything reasonably ‘normal’ a cook would want that they couldn’t find there - admittedly you can’t buy things like urchin or goat

No

Ocado used to do a basic basted chicken from Waitrose
When M&S took over the options changed to the rotisserie chicken (total crap) and also a basted chicken which has massively more calories as the taste came not from butter and herbs as with Waitrose (which was a few calories more than a plain chicken) but from sugar coated herby mixture.

Of course, it's not the same as buying everything from separate artisan producers and making your own bread and cheese whilst trampling your own grapes for the wine you don't drink anyway....🙄

I love all the processed muck. An M&S old school roast chicken pie is heaven. I love all their stuff. They do little balls of mozzarella with pesto which are just lovely.

BHRK · 26/05/2023 22:16

M&S food is generally yummy. When I cba cooking we have their curries, Chinese and pizzas. Also like the Gastropub range

Professionallytorn · 26/05/2023 22:17

Another vote for the Mushroom Pappardelle, it's lovely !

continentallentil · 26/05/2023 22:28

Their stir fry meal deals are way better than anyone else’s (veg, rice/noodles, protein and sauce)

Slow cooked meats also good and often microwaveable (uniquely I think)

Their grains and greens sides are great, so much better than the merchant gourmet long life ones

Cornish cruncher cheddar and Pave D'Affinois Brie type cheese both great

I also like their cheese and celery sandwich and their yum yums

However, Charlie Bingham beats them and everyone else for fish pie and cottage pie

continentallentil · 26/05/2023 22:32

Oh and their apricot jam is very tangy and their spreadable butter is only a bit less good than the President one..

Marcipex · 26/05/2023 22:36

Fav food is the salt and pepper crisps.

But my sneaky food for when DH was overseas was the Welsh rarebit (and some part-baked rolls to dip in it). Then dd discovered them.

Then she sneaked on me to DH when he was home.

So it's no longer quiet glass of wine and cheesy goodness, but family noI-cook night.

We also quite like the chicken and bacon pie and the slow cook beef bourgigonge.

BiddyPop · 26/05/2023 22:54

(Pie as it frees well and bpurgigonne as it usually has good dates for fridge and is so easy to reheat)

crew2022 · 27/05/2023 02:09

Cauliflower popcorn makes a lovely sharing snack.

DinosApple · 27/05/2023 06:59

Can't help with a meal, but the pistachio cookies are delicious!

billyt · 27/05/2023 08:51

Definitely the Moussaka (although I don't share Grin )

But also I really enjoy the fresh Peri-Peri or Chicken Caesar wraps. They're a meal on their own!

Diplidocus4 · 27/05/2023 08:51

@BiddyPop
M&S sell Welsh Rarebit ?

BiddyPop · 27/05/2023 09:01

Diplodocus they sell a couple of different kinds of "cheese in a terracotta pot to bake", in 1 or 2 person sized, and a massive one as Christmas. Very handy for back of the fridge as they last ages...chuck it and part baked bread into oven together and open white wine while you wait...

Diplidocus4 · 27/05/2023 11:15

@BiddyPop
That's my evening sorted ! Cold white wine and warm cheese ....

Treesnbirds · 27/05/2023 12:51

Plant Kitchen Kievs - delicious!!!
Or their Plant Kitchen spicy pizza is AMAZING.

VillageFete · 27/05/2023 17:56

It’s so expensive there now, can’t go as often as I once did 😫But I do love M&S.

Their ultimate prawn cocktail is incredible, I make a lovely salad to go with it.

My kids love their Lasagne and their fresh chicken nuggets.

The cod and katsu fishcakes are beautiful.

I’ll never get over them discontinuing their chicken and bacon en croutes, God they were gorgeous. No other supermarket’s version compares whatsoever.

I’m going to take inspiration from this thread and buy a few new bits….

VillageFete · 27/05/2023 18:02

Oh, also their cauliflower cheese is amazing, but again it’s gone so expensive.

I want to try the curry they do with the tiger prawns and cod in, but DP doesn’t eat fish and it’s a tenner for the curry so can I justify it?

They also do this tandoori chicken box meal. So good, but you don’t get rice with it, you need to buy it separately. It’s £12 for the tandoori chicken box meal so I often think “I’ll just get an Indian takeaway instead, it’s not much more
expensive”

Crikeyalmighty · 27/05/2023 18:07

@VillageFete Omg I had forgotten about the chicken and bacon en croutes- delicious!!
