When the brand became popular. I guess there is little difference in that and people referring to their Hoover/Dyson instead of Vacuum Cleaner, or their iPhone instead of phone

Really, when I say sharpie I mean sharpie. The ink is different than the average felt tip and lasts longer. We specifically keep sharpies around the house for a reason.

I'm with the others. Sharpie lasts, regular pen may not. So if giving advice on how to keep kids safe on holidays I'd 100% tell you the type of marker I used as opposed to just "felt tip" or "marker" because otherwise it could be useless advice.

Sharpie means Sharpie - not a felt tip pen.

A sharpie is smellier and more permanent than a felt tip pen, which might be washable.

She'd write on her kids with a Sharpie because it's much less likely to come off than felt tip.

You gave is used in the right context for it to be an actual Sharpie. Same for the Plushie it’s a type of cuddly toy.

A sharpie is a particular brand of permanent marker. If someone refers to a sharpie they are talking about a sharpie, not a felt tip.

Felt tip hasn't become Sharpie. Everyone I ever hear referring to a Sharpie means a permanent marker, not a felt tip.

People use Sharpie to write on arms because it's a permanent pen.

My dc say texta as they grew up in Australia and that's what they say there so I'm always aware of the words surrounding felt tips, sharpies etc.

And I do supply in schools where as soon as the dc find out their teacher is away they immediately prey on my weaknesses and ask if they use the felt tips.

It's happened probably five hundred times in many schools and nobody has ever said sharpie.

Writing on a childs arm in felt tip for a day trip would be pretty pointless, it would rub off by lunchtime.
