When did felt tip become "Sharpie"?

Just that really.

Printed by a thread in which the British OP said she'd write her phone number on her kids' arms "in sharpie" when they went to busy places.

I have a double ended Sharpie, one end thick and one end fine.

A Sharpie has to be a Sharpie, even imitation Sharpies are rubbish, they dry out and fade/wipe off when a real Sharpie doesn't.

(I've written Sharpie so much, I have a picture of a wrinkly dog in my head now).

HappyAsASandboy · 25/05/2023 09:32

I use both terms, and they mean different things.

I would also write on kids arms with Sharpie because it is much more permanent than felt tip.

I avoid leaving sharpies anywhere accessible because I hate it when the kids use them for colouring. They go straight through paper and stain the table, they don't wash off clothes, and they're hard to wash off skin.

So, felt tips for colouring on paper, sharpie for anything more long-lasting.

ChocChipHandbag · 25/05/2023 10:15

Yeah OK take your point, but agree with the poster who posted the pic of that massive multicoloured pack- who needs permanent marker in that many colours?

I'm old, Sharpies were not a thing when I was a kid (80s/early 90s) and I had never had a need for one as an adult either. The ubiquity of the brand has crept up on me.

The arrival of Sharpies in the UK was a dark day for school graffiti. They are an absolute bugger to remove.

Needmorelego · 25/05/2023 10:44

@ChocChipHandbag I love using Sharpie pens for my adult colouring books (you do have to put a piece of card or similar underneath because the ink goes through).
A lot of people use them for manga style art.
That's why you need so many colours.

Needmorelego · 25/05/2023 10:45

@ChocChipHandbag the rise of popularity of 'adult' colouring books is probably why the popularity of Sharpie pens (or similar brands) is such a thing now.

angelicaelizapeggy · 25/05/2023 10:48

I always forget cello tape and hoover are brands, I just use them to refer to all sticky tape and vacuuming

TurquoiseDress · 25/05/2023 10:49

A Sharpie is not a felt tip pen

In my head they are very distinct things

My children use felt tip pens for colouring

I try to keep my small handful of Sharpies out of their clutches!

I have read the word sharpie way too many times now.

Sharpie Sharpie Sharpie Sharpie Sharpie

And flip-flops are thongs!

Haha, yeah. Everyone gives me a funny look when I mention thongs to go out in. Def ones for my feet!

I grew up in South Africa where a felt tip is called a koki. Never heard of either a felt tip or Sharpie till I moved to the UK.

😂 I was going to post the same thing.

Permanent koki
Or
Colour koki.

We had a visitor from UK recently and when we went to fetch a certain brand of pizza in which you get a free cool drink in the deal, the cashier asked 'which Coke do you want'? So visitor said Coke Zero or light. They didn't have those options, so I had to explain that she was asking which fizzy drink, ie Creme Soda, Fanta etc. But Stoney also falls into this general term. So, 'do you want a Stoney? Yes please I'll have a Lemon Twist' makes perfect sense here 😂

Also applies for toothpaste. Colgate doesn't just mean Colgate. It can be Aquafresh or Mentadent P.

I'm quite sure there are more that I can't think of right now.

LotsOfBalloons · 25/05/2023 17:28

Still I think we've pretry universally established "sharpie to write on a kids arm" is different to writing with a felt tip pen havent we?

I love sharpies - use them to write names in clothes but also names on lunch boxes and water bottles and for work on file dividers/ring binders etc.

Absolutely. No different to saying that you had used 'biro' - another brand name that has become generic.

Ponderingwindow · 25/05/2023 00:48

Really, when I say sharpie I mean sharpie. The ink is different than the average felt tip and lasts longer. We specifically keep sharpies around the house for a reason.

I agree. Sharpies are permanent markers, not all felt tips are. I do like a Sharpie though.

Oldnproud · 25/05/2023 18:15

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/05/2023 07:51

Has the confusion between sharpie and felt tips come from the fact that they permanent markers of yesteryear were generally sold in ones, were always black and often with a thick nib; meanwhile sharpies are marketed like this...

I can understand why people would think they were a brand of felt tips if they didn't know they were permanent.

It certainly confused me.
I saw those packs and assumed that they were just 'modern' felt tip pens, and bought them for colouring in. I let my older dgc (were about 5 and 7 then) to use them for that purpose, and I have to say that they did much better colouring with those than they ever did with actual felt tip pens. I quickly realized that they were permanent though, and took necessary precautions to protectvthe table etc.
Despite that, it has only just clicked with me that using them as felt tip pens is not their primary purpose!

mathanxiety · 25/05/2023 19:18

There's a difference between felt tip pens and Sharpies.

In the case of felt tip pens (also known as markers), you can wash most writing done with them off skin or clothing.
Sharpies are not washable.

If you've heard people use the terms felt tip pen/ marker amd Sharpie interchangeably, they've been making a mistake.

hopefulsquirrel · 25/05/2023 07:52

I thought the Americanism was actually magic markers.

I've never heard this term in the US in reference to Sharpies.

Permanent markers, yes.

mathanxiety · 25/05/2023 19:23

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 25/05/2023 08:21

‘Plushie’ IME describes a soft toy aimed at an older consumer, often as a franchise tie-in. A teddy for a baby isn’t a plushie. The traditional American English term for a child’s soft toy would be a ‘stuffed animal’ or ‘stuffed toy’.

We've moved on in the US to 'stuffie'.

musixa · 25/05/2023 19:23

Still felt tips or felt pens here! Sharpie I would only use for a pen of that brand.

mathanxiety · 25/05/2023 19:28

You can use those coloured Sharpies for making posters, for classroom signs and name labels (and much more in the classroom), for marking children's socks discreetly near the toe so you dont end up putting the wrong items away in drawers, and probably lots more

I was a kid in the 60s and 70s and have used them frequently ever since they first hit the market.

Soubriquet · 25/05/2023 19:29

All sharpies are felt tips but not all felt tips are sharpies.

Plus I’m sure sharpies are a bit more permanent than a felt tip

drpet49 · 25/05/2023 19:32

When vacuum cleaners became Hoovers

BillyNighysWife · 25/05/2023 19:33

@sashh

Sharpie doesn't wash off easily and it doesn't smudge which is why magicians have used them for decades

I don’t understand. What do magicians use them for?

tiggergoesbounce · 25/05/2023 19:37

I dont use the term sharpie, neither does anyone i know.

LotsOfBalloons · 25/05/2023 19:39

Trigger- what do you call sharpies then? Permanent markers?
