When did felt tip become "Sharpie"?

Just that really.

Printed by a thread in which the British OP said she'd write her phone number on her kids' arms "in sharpie" when they went to busy places.

@isthismylifenow slops!! I had no idea what he was on about when he first said that!!

CloudPop · 30/05/2023 17:33

@isthismylifenow totally ! Koki pens and takkies

Phos · 30/05/2023 21:16

@isthismylifenow He looked slightly scared and said "It's a pen.... what do you want me to say?"

When I said "Its not a koki?" He agreed that it was and that he's sure he's called it that before when talking to me and then asked who I'd been talking to about Safferisms.

Bubblyb00b · 30/05/2023 21:26

Sharpie is not just a felt tip, its a permanent marker! How silly to think its the same thing - use any felt tip and then use Sharpie, see how easy it it to clean))

I reckon he just couldn't bring himself to say felt tip 😂

He could have called it a 'dingis'. 🤣

It's a term for something when the name doesn't spring to mind. Like 'thingmebob' .

But a sharpie is different to most felt tips in that it would be harder to wash off?

How is it an Americanism?

Sharpie is just the brand name, like Coca Cola or Cadbury's.

Exactly. How can it be an Americanism, when Sharpies are used here.

bladebladebla1 · 31/05/2023 06:14

Ey, we either have felt tips or sharpies. Sharpies last a lot longer and write better, they're not the same.

bladebladebla1 · 31/05/2023 06:14

I need to start reading replies before I type ffs

orangeclubsarebest · 31/05/2023 06:19

Sharpie is a permanent marker. Felt tip is a colouring pen for kids. That's how I see it anyway. I don't use the two names interchangeably.

How rude.

I think after 6 pages of unanimously being told they are different things that OP may now know that 😁.

Come to think of it, I'm sure he's said "dingis" before and in the context it jussounds enough like thingum that my brain didn't register that he was talking Saffer.

I still haven't manage to convince him that the crunchy things in packets made by walkers are crisps and not chips.

Sorry OP, derailing your thread here .

@Phos when you see your dh tonight, greet him with 'hello Bokkie'... 😂. Or possibly even 'my (pronounced may) Bok Bok.

It's not rude, I promise.

Then he will know for sure you've been chatting to a fellow Saffer.

They are chips, and always will be chips.

Hot chips aka slap chips. (Pr. Slup)

Or a packet of chips.

Two different things, same name yes. Not unlike the pens.

StarlightLady · 31/05/2023 12:37

A sharpie is a felt tip, but a felt tip is not necessarily a sharpie.

I've called him Bokkie on and off since I met him :) And more recently sometimes sing Bokkies Jag by Ricus Nel at him (I understand enough Afrikaans to know its a bit inappropriate)

I also am intrigued to know why a pp said magicians have been using sharpies for years…

They are permeant and they can be seen easily from a distance, if you watch any tricks on TV that have someone sign a card it will be a sharpie.

There are tricks you can buy that have you put a sharpie through a card, or your hand or through anything - because sharpies are all the same size and shape the trick makers can use those dimensions.

They are quite thick so you can make them into a companion for a PK ring so you can float cards or roll pens as though you have telekinesis.

Magicians tend to use a card manufacturer called 'Bicycle' so card tricks or trick decks are Bicycle and lots of coin magic uses half dollars.
