About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

Please tell me your joking. So I've been saying it wrong the last 5 years, even though I don't live to far away. How embarrassing 😳

At least you're not alone 😂

KirstenBlest · 25/05/2023 22:53

and gavotte from My Fair Lady

Carly Simon sang 'gavotte'not gavoy.

KirstenBlest · 25/05/2023 22:13

@Macinae , I've only ever heard it as Lemster. I remember an ad on the notice board at work offering a Hampster Cage.

I only ever saw it in writing, until one day at a train station the announcement pronounced it.

KirstenBlest · 25/05/2023 22:55

I hated the Eurythmics. Something to do with the schoolboys alternative lyrics for Sweet Dreams are made of this.

Fink · 25/05/2023 22:56

I went to Wigan to visit a friend, realised it was not on the coast (to my slight surprise, even though I'd been following Google maps for hundreds of miles and could see the overview of where it was when I started ...) and decided, secretly, that there was no pier. It must all have been a literary invention, I thought. I never asked my friend to show me it. We went to a National Trust place over an hour away and I never saw the centre of Wigan. The friend has since moved so maybe I never will!

KirstenBlest · 25/05/2023 22:57

@macinae, at least it wasn't for a Heominster Cage to go with the Chester Draws Grin

Macinae · 25/05/2023 23:04

@KirstenBlest 😂😳

EpicChaos · 25/05/2023 23:11

@JudgeJ I believe he did yes - i keep getting a video of him doing that part of his show on my youtube recommends but i've never watched it, or much of him otherwise, tbh.
I'm sure there'll be loads of misheard lyrics though, so i expect he'll have made a good skit of it all.

It is in Essex. Not that far from where I live. It is in the South East of England.

The first time I tried to pronounce Billericay it caused great amusement to my colleague from Sarfend!

mrlistersgelfbride · 25/05/2023 23:12

That the Arctic Monkeys album 'AM' is the band initials. For years I thought it was a reference to the time of day 🙈😂

I always thought that the 2 panels on University Challenge were on top of each other and they had to climb up some stairs at the side to get to the top level. I only found this out recently. I was always madly concerned that the ones on the top may not like heights and it may affect their performance. Also, did they flip a coin to see who was on the top?

I thought this until a couple of years ago, mentioned to dh that it was weird they didn’t show the stairs. The penny dropped and he was in hysterics 🙄

In my Saturday job when I was at school, I worked alongside a permanent member of staff, not that much older than me. If anyone remembers the song by Clout, 'Substitute' from the 70s? - well colleague thought they were singing, "I'll be your prostitute, whenever you want me!"

DH thought that the Police sang about "that famous book by Neville Cough" in Don't Stand so close to me...

DC2 once pondered whether, if a dog was reared by humans, it would learn to speak....!!! (think she had the Jungle Book in mind lol). Anyway, relayed the tale laughing to work colleagues, and one educated to Masters level said quite seriously, "yes, I wonder would they?"!!

KirstenBlest · 25/05/2023 23:21

@Canthave2manycats , you made those up, surely?

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/05/2023 23:24

RE University Challenge.....In fairness.........they were originally seated in physically tiered seats so one team was above the other as split screen stuff wasnt easy to do when it first started. So its not actually as daft as it sounds to think that it continued. The Young Ones were being factually correct for a certain point in the shows history, although not the one that they were portraying admittedly! It may have helped perpetuate the belief though.

It was really only when the end credits started showing them all on the same level that it made it clear that they no longer were.

CherryRipe1 · 25/05/2023 23:26

For years I thought Demerara sugar came from Ireland & argued with my dad about it, he said it came from India and I've only just found out it comes from Guyana, South America.

I thought hamsters were native UK rodents like dormice.

I had no idea that Brunei was in Borneo - I had always assumed it was in the Middle East somewhere.

I thought the same until DH told me where it is about 10 years ago. I think it's because it has a Sultan- which I associate with the Middle East for some reason.

Bookloverjay · 25/05/2023 23:30

Found out today... that the song called Heaven was originally sang and written by Bryan Adams.

LuluBlakey1 · 25/05/2023 23:32

I was at a meeting where a teacher in her 30s said Greece was a holiday resort in Hawaii.

Cattenberg · 25/05/2023 23:42

I had to fix a few errors on our work database because one of my colleagues had coded the Philippines as being in South America.

BrandyandGinger · 25/05/2023 23:47

Isn't Gram just a name in it's own right, not just the way Americans pronounce Graham? Gram Parsons?
I'm Irish and I'd have bet money that Carlisle is in Scotland. It sounds very Scottish.

I was 25 when I found out raisins were dried grapes!!! I’m ashamed to say…

Also growing up my mother would say ‘keep Britain tidy’ meaning keep the house tidy… I thought she was saying ‘keep brit and tidy’ I never knew what she meant 🤣

Oh my God, yes, it was like a project when I was at primary school and I thought it was keep writ and tidy. Never understood why!

Platypus are venomous

What? Seriously?
I'll know not to ever touch one, very unlikely to come across one

LuluBlakey1 · 25/05/2023 23:51

Ifyou gave me a map of counties of England, without names on, I could not place the clump in the red outline in the right place. I could do all the northern ones, eastern ones , Devon, Cirnwall and most if the coastal ones but that clump around London, South of Manchester and the West, I'd have no idea which was which.

BrandyandGinger · 25/05/2023 23:51

Google tells me that Gram Parsons original name was Ingram. You learn something new every day.
