About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

Until very recently, I thought narwhals were mythical creatures, like unicorns. Still find it hard to believe they are real!

Same! I am still convinced it’s got to be a Photoshop hoax. I mean, come on, unicorn-whales?!

I used to think Torquay was a place in Spain 😳

I came here to say the same 😂

Woahtherehoney · 25/05/2023 07:29

Omg exactly haha! The correlation between it being in France and the war didn’t even cross my mind it just sounds Scottish!

Dunkirk is one of those foreign places that has an English spelling. In France, they spell it Dunqkerque. Like Antwerp, which is Anvers in French and Antwerpen in Flemish, or The Hague, which is Den Haag in Dutch. Also Tangiers and Algiers (Tanger and Alger in French). I don't know if many English people insist on Marseilles and Lyons with the final 's' these days. Plenty of Italian places!

There was that bloke in the news not so long ago who helped foil a terror attack outside Fishmonger's Hall in London by rushing at the knife-wielding attacker with a 5 ft long narwhal tusk he grabbed from a wall inside the building, where it had been hung as an exhibit. A kind of long thin tapering pole made of bone, somewhat pointed at one end.

Yes I know they’re real! I was just trying to emphasise how absurd this is!

TheChosenTwo · 25/05/2023 08:34

@Tirtytreeandaturd i can’t wait for my pubes to disappear 😂
I must say you lot have had me in stitches, so many of us in the original Skegness quandary and so many more geographical fuckups!
If came about when dd and I were talking about Butlins, neither of us have ever been but I had a feeling there used to be loads and I knew there were only 3 now, but I said 2 of them are in England and one in Scotland. Imagine my face when I double checked!

Up until this moment, I still thought that.

I thought that for ages too- and after all, some carols do refer to the baby Jesus as 'the newborn King'.

greeneyessparksfly · 25/05/2023 07:55

I came here to say the same 😂

Reminds me of a Lily Savage line.

"I asked our Vera to book us a holiday to Torquay.

"Anyway, when we arrived in Istanbul... "

CharlottenBurger · 25/05/2023 09:02

Sorry, the French spelling is Dunkerque. No kirk there! A godless lot, evidently.

That Roger Hargreaves fellow, yes, but not his Mister Men books. They live in Misterland. Timbuctoo is a different series of books.

Yes, but Timbuktu is mentioned as a place in the Mister Men series. I'm not going to reread the horrible things just to win an argument but I have had to read them aloud this year so I'm confident that remains the case.

I did not realise ducks could fly until about four years ago.

I thought Argentina was in Spain

I thought India was a country

I thought bungee jumping was where you were attached to a spring and bounced back to the top

There is no hope for me

what do you mean India's not a country? Maybe not it's full official name but surely it is?

🤣🤣🤣 I thought the Sistine Chapel was called sixteenth chapel.

I have only discovered the steering wheel in my husband's range rover is heated if you press a button, I have been driving it around for ages with cold hands in the winter.

I thought jay walking was people who had too much to drink

You wouldn't think I had a masters degree.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/05/2023 09:36

I was surprised when I found out Arabic doesn’t have capital letters.

Knotty Ash is a real district of Liverpool … there’s a sign on the M62!

It is. It isn't far from me.

There is a place called Crank also. Everytime we drive past the sign I say to my husband "Oohh look a town named after you" like the child I am.

getafringenotbotox · 25/05/2023 09:54

I also didn't know the Sistine chapel was in Rome until I went to Rome and went in and screamed. Grin

(I didn't really scream but I didn't know it was in Rome till the tour guide took us in)

I was just thinking I am sure it is not Rome but in Italy, but Rome is in Italy 😬😬

Berlinlover · 25/05/2023 09:59

I always thought Dunkirk was in Scotland.

hookiewookie29 · 25/05/2023 09:59

For years I thought Kings Kynn was in Birmingham!

PuttingDownRoots · 25/05/2023 10:04

Technically the Sistene Chapel is in Vatican City, which is a separate country to Italy, in the middle of Rome
