@Rainallnight
it's really expensive and really didn't feel authentic. We got a 'Disneyland in the jungle' vibe as the entire country is set up for rich US tourists and that's about it. I didn't find a very rich culture either. I would recommend Mexico, Honduras or El Salvador any day over Costa RIca.

The entire country is setup for rich US tourists lol, that some serious generalization.

@Cantstandbullshitanymore
thank you - I enjoyed it

I now live in LA and wouldn’t tell anyone to vacation in LA. A road trip in California yes but LA so expensive, and the sights fairly modest so I don’t think it is a big enough pull for the sheer cost. You have to work hard to find the fun and then pay through the nose.

I read the post last week and was worried because I was heading to NYC (here now) for a weekend break. Been here 10 years ago.

I love it. Don’t understand the hate. I quickly passed through Times Square which is like a busy hot day on Oxford street on steroids and if you hang around 7th and 34th (Penn Metro), and the traders on Canal Street I can understand it may not have been the image you had but that’s a big diverse city for you. There is so much culture and vibe and diversity.

But we’ve come from sleepy LA. I don’t feel the museums are outstanding enough to come to LA alone. Mr Brainwash is fun if you’re in LA on a weekend.

For Costa Rica - loved OSA Peninsula - should have spent two weeks there. Wasn’t blown away by Arenal. Didn’t do the coasts so can’t comment.

I’ll say I wasn’t blown away by Belize. Happy to take advice as feel I should give it a second chance. Just felt a little sad.

Yes it’s probably that, Bath has the exact same feeling! Dead.

I've heard Bath described by somebody as 'just too other'. She was 17, thinking of applying for uni there, she went elsewhere.
I know what she means, only been there once as a tourist, did the Roman Baths thing, couldn't leave quickly enough. It seemed very 'up itself', in a similar way to Stratford-on-Avon but at least the latter has wonderful 'theatricals', nice river!

That’s interesting about Stratford, I don’t get that feeling but I have occasion to go there very often so I’m perhaps over familiar with it

I am shocked at some of these. I loved New York, Venice & especially Rome (been 8 times & counting!). I even liked Framlingham!
Do people expect some sort of Disney-style sanitised tourist trap? The whole point of these cities is that they are real, with real people - even if they do include a bit of muck. There is no better smell, on a hot summer's day, than that distinctive whiff of European drains combined with foreign cigarettes and two stroke petrol - I wish I could bottle it!

Hbh17 · 29/05/2023 11:40

We were surprised by how much we both loved Athens, having put off going for years - we had a lovely week there, and the new museum is fabulous.
Also like Croatia, but both Split and Rovinj are nicer than Dubrovnik (touristy, but not too touristy).

Interested about Athens - I’ve always been put off too - did it feel safe?

BarrelOfOtters · 31/05/2023 08:44

@OMG12 I was there the year before covid. Felt really safe. I’d say there’s enough to do in the city to keep you happily occupied for 4 to 5 days. But not overwhelming. After that I think you need to head out. You could easily see enough in a long weekend. It wasn’t my favourite European city but I liked it, at well, felt very safe and the history is obviously amazing.

Wexone · 31/05/2023 11:59

@OMG12 did Athens as a stop over for a few days on way to a wedding in one of the islands. Never been on my list but i loved it, the history is unreal, lots to do, good transport, was reasonable for food and drink. Felt totally safe. Very impressed with it, but went in June, the humidity was unreal, we actually got off the bus earlier than we were suppose to to walk and allow the sweat to dry off us, and i normally love the heat. Stop at a small town on way back after wedding, a big resort by the beach, again loved it, very relaxing. The only thing didn't like was 4 and a half flight plus 4 hours ahead time wise.

Interesting - so many not rating Rome and Paris. I have to admit, Paris was a bit of a 'meh' to me for a long time until fairly recently.

I think for both Paris and Rome it really makes a difference as to where you stay. In Rome, busy Travestere is lovely, especially in the evening but still close to everything.

In Paris, Saint Germaine is lovely and a great evening vibe and very close to all the main sights.

If you feel you need to get out of Rome for half a day or so, head to Ostea Antica, Rome's smaller (but much less busy) version of Pompei. About 50min - 1 hour on public transport.

Typo - should say Trastevere

We stayed in Trastevere last summer - just fabulous - amazing authentic party atmosphere delicious food everyone dressed up glamorously. Teens still talk about it. Young couple at next table got engaged and the whole square erupted.

Same here. How great is Trastevere in Rome. Full of beautiful people having a great time in amazing surrounds and incredible food and drink. Dh was mainlining Aperol Spritzers and people watching. Rome is one of our all time fave destinations.

TheaBrandt · 01/06/2023 10:00

Teen 2 determined to live there 😀

Yeovil. Visited for the first time last week. Was very disappointed. Most shops closed, everywhere seems to be road repairs, town centre looks like it was having maintenance but no workmen around. Just seemed sad to me but looked like it used to be a nice place. In the town centre, it had a nice court yard with benches to sit on but lots of drug taking/pissed up people enjoying the weather. Didn't bother me but just had a weird vibe about the place.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 01/06/2023 14:20

Wasn't there a whole thread started by someone who was disappointed in Yeovil a couple of weeks ago ?

catwithflowers · 12/06/2023 11:27

We went to Trastevere for our honeymoon five years ago. It was beautiful and I would love to go back 😍

Interestingly, we went to Majorca a few years ago and I had really low expectations but I thought it was stunning.

I loved it too. It is truly beautiful.
