Stonehenge and Paris. So disappointing.

Say more? Have always wanted to go there!

Me too!

Monaco

@Rainallnight
it's really expensive and really didn't feel authentic. We got a 'Disneyland in the jungle' vibe as the entire country is set up for rich US tourists and that's about it. I didn't find a very rich culture either. I would recommend Mexico, Honduras or El Salvador any day over Costa RIca.

Costa Rica

This shows how individual these things are.
This is one of my absolutely favorite destinations and we had a fantastic family holiday there.

So I would also like to know more about what you didn't like about it.
( I also quite like Paris)

lakesummer · 26/05/2023 18:37

We lived in Mexico for a few years and I would agree it has better culture and food.
I don't think the wildlife is nearly as interesting or at least as available to see.
It also is a much less safe country to let tourists head off in a hired jeep.

I agree, Costa Rica was one of my favorite trips, loved the wildlife, beaches, hiking trails, and enjoyed a bit of touristy ziplining too.

My main issue with Paris is not what there is to do, it’s the vibe of the place, there’s an evil atmosphere to me, it’s the sort of place that I can imagine at the end of times demons congregate.

no amount of paintings or architecture is going to make up for that.

I feel this too! It's just...oppressive somehow. My friend lived in a suburb out of Paris and that was lovely. But the city feels sinister.

CatAndHisKit · 26/05/2023 21:41

I wonder if people mean 'seductive' like the place charms you, about Paris, when they call it sinister and demonic? I mean it does have a reputation for a romantic / sexual vibe, maybe some people like more 'jolly' and simple places.
But yes, the poster on prev page (sorry should hae copied your name) - some people aer not open to something unfamiliar and see it as uncomfortable maybe, mind you it's their right, so they can choose elsewhere.
I loved Ile St Louis in Paris, it's magical, and yes sort of exciting. Not a huge fan of the very centre around the Opera, Concorde etc - it's just grand, and I prefer charming .

OMG12 · 26/05/2023 22:16

There’s definitely something wrong with it, thinking about it, it’s the same feeling I get in Bath. Empty of life. Soulless twilight zone

Changethetoner · 26/05/2023 22:20

Glendalough - County Wicklow, Ireland.
Was billed as a beautiful rural, religious destination, but was totally over filled with tourists, making it horrid.

OMG12 · 26/05/2023 22:24

i definitely mean evil and demonic about Paris, like the life force has been sucked out of it. I have nothing against seductive but I find Paris about as seductive as a rotting corpse.

I’ve been to so many places round the world which I love but there should be a big sign over Paris “Abandon all hope ye who enter here”

CatAndHisKit · 26/05/2023 23:05

OMG, haha! Well not evryone is feeling that - maybe you have an extra sensitivity to the supernatural!

I went there one October (years ago). It was so peaceful and beautiful. No tourists at all.

Yes it’s probably that, Bath has the exact same feeling! Dead.

October. Yes that explains it. Was there one summer in the 70s and it was almost deserted. But nothing lasts forever I guess. ...

Sounds like you read Da Vinci Code and thought it was a Lonely Planet book 😂

Anywhere in Spain. Full of garish Brits who treat it like a hot Blackpool.

What I hated about Paris were the vast open spaces like the Place Concorde. I found the whole place overwhelming and could not get my orientation at all. Normally I've a good sense of direction but just could not get my bearings in Paris. Lots of dodgy characters around accosting us to buy tat and quite aggressive and scary when we refused.

I personally love Spain Not the Brit resort bits and fortunately they are a real minority compared to the fabulous bits. We're just back from Valencia and previously have been to Seville, Cordoba, Malaga, Cadiz, Granada, Palma, Jerez and more. Have driven high up in Andalusia and in Northern Spain. Leave the Brits to their lager and go and explore the rest of this fabulous country.

Yes. I visited Llanes in northern Spain, beautiful.

How on earth can you diss an entire country, particularly one the size of Spain?!

There are plenty of beautiful places - just avoid the most touristy bits! We love Costa del Sol, but wouldn't go to somewhere like Torremolinos or Benalmadena - we've gone further along the coast, places like Mijas, Estepona, Sabinillas, Puerto de la Duquesa. We also loved Seville; have visited a few times and would go back happily. Madrid is a lovely city too, and we're about to take a trip to Valencia. Nerja and Malaga are on my 'list'.
