Nebraska. Just so flat and dull. We literally sped through it, bar stopping at K-Mart for a Cornhuskers t-shirt which I love.

I don't know anyone who would rate Nebraska highly, to be fair 😂

Threelionsandalioness · 22/05/2023 02:23

Paris , dirty,overpriced and unkempt.
Venice,so disappointed 😞, the sewage smell was everywhere.

Mothership4two · 22/05/2023 02:55

Amsterdam
Dublin
Florence
The Lake District
New York
North Wales - but weather was AWFUL

Pisa is what it is.- likewise Stonehenge (it's over 4,000 years old! What are you expecting?).

I love Venice and have never had a bad holiday there or noticed unpleasant smells and we have been in August. Also enjoyed Rome and the Amalfi Coast. Have holidayed in Turkey in the South and it was beautiful and lush. We go to Cornwall 1-2 times a year either on Bodmin Moor or way down in the South in an area away from crowds where we can walk to the beach down a footpath in 10 mins and it is spectacularly lovely. Also think Edinburgh and York are great, just pick your areas to visit. We have stayed on Mull once and everyone we met was friendly and the scenery was stunning. Niagara Falls (not the town) was amazing.

Densol57 · 22/05/2023 03:02

I love
Las Vegas
New York
Florida
Pisa
Naples
Venice
Paris
Majorca
Ibiza
LA
San Fransisco
Grand Canyon

which are a few mentioned that I disagree with

one I agree with is :-

Niagara Falls - meh

mine
Hawaiian Islands - bit meh too

I tend to travel with an open mind so I’m rarely disappointed, but I must say I find Singapore underwhelming. People seem to rave about it but I find it rather sterile and probably the most characterless country in the region.

Ivyiris · 22/05/2023 03:38

Ive loved most places I've been.

Specifics I don't like

Vatican museum was overcrowded
Watch out for scammers in Barcelona and NY.

Still loved my trips

Freckles978 · 22/05/2023 03:46

Tunisia - the locals can literally not see a woman without popping their heads out of their cars, or worse a bunch of men from the buses!

Barcelona - overrated, just a normal city.

Panama - the difference between the poor and rich is extreme! Any good beaches are far away from the airport.

Durdle door (for now) - I went a few times prior to having kids, but I cannot imagine going now at all! No toilet or rubbish bins once you walk down the VERY steep steps and onto the beach, and do not want to imagine having to walk them back up! I was tired enough when I was fit, slim and single, don't want to imagine while I'm now the opposite plus having to carry my children's belonging too!

Mothership4two · 22/05/2023 03:47

Agree @Boredwitholdname about Singapore it had a Truman Show feel to it.

Reminded by @Ivyiris's post that we should have given the Vatican a miss - an ironically a soulless place where visitors are treated quite rudely and herded around, nuns sell tat in the gift shops and the eyewatering wealth on show in the museum (and elsewhere) is completely at odds with the message of the New Testament

lakesummer · 22/05/2023 03:55

We took our first family road-trip to Nebraska, there were family history reasons.
Our Chicago friends were totally perplexed.

Anyway I throughly enjoyed it and won't hear any thing against it 🤣

Mothership4two · 22/05/2023 04:07

My son did a sports course in Nebraska and said it was the most boring place on the planet. He was also shocked by the unenlightened attitude of young men towards young women and girls.

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 22/05/2023 05:47

Im afraid it's Liverpool, which I know won't go down well on here. The two cathedrals were beautiful and tiles outside the Cavern Club were interesting but otherwise I just didn't get it.

And lolling at Mobile. My BIL lives there.

I had a few days there, some years ago, waiting to join a ship for an oilfield survey. We went to an "English Pub," which had half strength Newcastle Brown Ale on tap. We were told to drop the "fake Limey" accents.

The bar staff obviously thought that, all over England, people speak like Hugh Grant.

The best thing I can say about it is that it's not as bad as Houston.

Dragonsmother · 22/05/2023 06:03

LA! It was awful.

Dublin - nothing interesting/nice to look at. Unfriendly locals. Very expensive and a lot of crime.
Anywhere in mainland Spain. Cannot understand the appeal of that country at all. Too hot in summer. Barren countryside. Rude people. Shit food. Everything takes forever and the bureaucracy is ridiculous. Cities stink and are full of dog piss and honking drains. Lots of thieves.

😱😱🤣. I know everyone is different but this comment made me laugh. I've had some fabulous holidays in Spain, mainly in cities. A few months ago we spent a great week in Madrid, so much art, culture, nice food, pleasant weather, lots to do and see (including a free lunch time concert by incredible talented young musicians) and nice people.

Horses for courses and all that ........ 😉

The Chinese market there was amazing. Food was great (I am an adventurous eater). This was pre covid.

Colorado. We stayed in an apartment on a sofa bed and it sagged like a hammock. Awful place. I’d never go back.

So you are saying that the entire state of Colorado is overrated because your bed was uncomfortable?

Mine is also Paris. Hated it, other parts of France are so much better.

aramo · 22/05/2023 06:39

I agree with Bali, we went there over 25 years ago and it was just not nice so I would hate to see how it has been affected by mass tourism now. The island of Lombok which is close by however was beautiful. I think Dubai has also really changed.

Maldives… hundreds of tiny (boring) islands in beautiful ocean - polluted by ‘rubbish island’. Absolutely sod all to do on each island except swim, £££jet ski, £££snorkel (swim), £££canoe, £££scuba (swim) and repeat - day in day out. Absolutely NO shops on each island bar one crappy souvenir stall. Nothing to do in the evenings. Nowhere to walk to : 5 mins to walk the length of each island. Yawn, yawn, yawn. An extortionently expensive utter disappointment. After 5 days Couldn’t wait to get home. Glad we only booked for a week. Oh, it took 23 hours and 3 flights to get there.

People saying the Maldives....I am not quite sure what you were expecting? Why would be surprised that there's nowhere to walk on a tiny island? Why would you need shops? Maybe you should have visited Dubai instead...

I think that people should do a little research before spending so much money and time to get there.

BeethovenNinth · 22/05/2023 06:48

I am laughing at the gothic edinburgh comment. Eh?! I’m assuming OP means she found the dark high rise tenements of the old town depressing?

I love travelling and am generally never underwhelmed but was very disappointed by Dublin. Dirty and rather dull. Sorry! But I grew up in edinburgh…..so maybe it’s not gothic enough

LovelyLisa2 · 22/05/2023 06:52

I have been there a few times. Never felt threatened at all.

Totally agree, what do they are expect.
We went to the Maldives and Sri Lanka for our honeymoon. Maldives to totally relax after the wedding, and then toured Sri Lanka.
This thread is just full of typical Mumsnet negativity . Ive been to a lot of places mentioned on here and I dont think any of them are as bad as posters are saying How can anyone say Grand Canyon is underwhelming!

BarrelOfOtters · 22/05/2023 07:07

See I would never go the Maldives as I know I’d be bored out my skull. But fair play to those who like that kind of thing. Love snorkelling but it needs to be in a mix of other things for me….I don’t like sit and read holidays by a beach for more than a day or two.

BarrelOfOtters · 22/05/2023 07:11

Writing off the whole of mainland Spain, I worked with an otherwise incredibly rational woman who had it in her head that the whole of Spain was straw donkeys and pissed up brits eating full English breakfasts.

some of my favourite places in the world are Granada, Seville and Jerez. The history, fabulous food, tapas free with a drink by law….

wistfullyfocused · 22/05/2023 07:22

My comment was a joke 😂… just to illustrate the lunacy of some of these comments.

The Lake District - grey and wet. Er where do you think the lakes come from, bottles?
