New York for sure

CrocodilesCry · 21/05/2023 22:31

Bath. Just didn't understand why people rave about it.

Refreshmentsanyone · 21/05/2023 22:31

Loads of people say New York now. It was the city in the ‘80’s /90’s. What’s changed?

Secondbreakfastclub · 21/05/2023 22:35

Vegas. Was not for us. My youngest understand why we were looking at hotels and he has a point. But I agree with others, the drive through Death Valley was fabulous as was the drive up the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Mammoth, Yosemite, Pacific Highway all stunning.

Bahamas. Like Magaluf for Floridians.

Gosh, I couldn't disagree more!
I have just come back and found it absolutely stunning.
Parts of Nassau, around the port, were heaving with cruise passengers and were definitely like Magaluf, but other parts of New Providence were beautiful....and, as for the islands, then I have never been anywhere with such amazing, quiet beaches and incredible waters!
Next time try Eleuthera and Exuma - highly recommended!!

porridgeisbae · 21/05/2023 22:39

Golithia Falls. There aren't any falls. Grin

madeinmanc · 21/05/2023 22:49

Belfast, tbf it was over-hyped by relatives to me so don't take offence if you're from there. They just went on and on and on about it for so long that when I finally got there I just had to be disappointed. And I've noticed people do do that still about the place, yes the rest of the area and the countryside is lovely but the city itself was grey and hostile feeling to me.

RedToothBrush · 21/05/2023 22:53

Reading this thread I tend to wonder why some people go places, they seem to want everywhere to be like home.

I think there is a definite mismatch between expectation and reality and people not really knowing enough about where they are going before they get there. And there's definitely something about what people like to do on holiday, especially whilst abroad.

I think you really do need to make sure you do your homework and work out where to go. Experience has taught me if you have only a few days somewhere, working out the very best places to go before you go really makes a huge difference to how you enjoy it.

One of the top grips on this thread is definitely the locals being rude - that smacks of just finding somewhere to eat whilst out, in a tourist trap. Knowing where to eat and which streets to avoid makes a world of difference. It definitely can ruin a holiday.

Rome is the one I can relate to most on this. I enjoyed going there - but we got ripped off by a taxi driver on a simple scam. Its the only place we've had that and it does leave a bad taste. It was also easy to see how it could be a massive disappointment - the restuarants we checked reviews for / had recommendations for were a whole world away from the ones we just rocked up to.

Its so worth realising taking a step backward to go to the next street over or walk a block or two more to the less touristy places makes a HUGE difference.

Or finding out what local events might be on.

The other interesting grip is the one about it being different on tv and how places with a sanitised makeover seem to be lowest in people's opinions. The US cities mentioned are particularly telling. As is Bali. Its the PR thing versus Reality. There's an instagram lesson to be learnt there.

Copacabana beach, like Benidorm with cold water and street gangs, every inch of beach is covered with towels and you can relax because every three minutes you have someone waking you up trying to sell you ice cream, soda, bracelets , foulards and god knows what. And Brasil is stupidly expensive.

Sandra1984 · 21/05/2023 22:54

Sorry I meant "You can't relax"

timtam23 · 21/05/2023 22:55

Another one who didn't like Cairo (this was nearly 30 years ago but once was more than enough) we had lots and lots of hassle from men (2 young females) endless attempts to rip us off going to/at the Pyramids, nearly sexually assaulted in a carpet shop...there were some good bits when we were able to explore a little on our own in peace, but the overall memory is of being hassled almost constantly

Morph22010 · 21/05/2023 23:00

Bondi Beach it was very much like skeg

porridgeisbae · 21/05/2023 23:04

Crete it was awful couldn’t wait to come home

CosyFanTucci · 21/05/2023 23:06

Cornwall.
Barcelona.
I’d add LA but I had really low expectations so I can’t count it as overrated- ditto Dubai.

The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, we walked up and down looking for it then realised that it must be where a crowd was, such a small statue.
The White House, again it's very small and we walked passed it a couple of times, even a couple of Americans were saying the same. In the East Room one Texan commented that his den was bigger!
The Sphinx, spoiled by the closeness of shops, a Burger King was facing it when we were there.
So many votes for Vegas but it doesn't pretend to be anything else than it is, brash and tacky! It used to be our arrival point a couple of days to kit ourselves out before the road trip started.

We had a similar experience looking for the Manneken Pis in Brussels. The rest of Brussels was the place that taste forgot but luckily this was pre-DC so we found a bar that sold something like 2000 different beers and got hammered 😃

Bruges was prettier but there are only so many chocolate shops selling chocolate knockers, willies and vulvas you can find amusing. But we found a bar that had cubes of cheese with celery salt served alongside beer to make you drink more and got hammered 😃

I had been warned the pyramids were overlooked by a Pizza Hut but I assumed the person who told me that was yanking my chain 😂

porridgeisbae · 21/05/2023 23:10

@CosyFanTucci Aww maybe you went to the wrong bit of Cornwall? We go virtually every year. North Cornwall- Boscastle/Tintagel/Trebarwith etc. Lovely views.

letthemalldoone · 21/05/2023 16:29

What's wrong with Leeds?!

Assuming we’re taking about the city centre, a decade ago I would have agreed with you.

Now it’s kind of run down and depressing 😢

notjaneausten · 21/05/2023 23:20

Rotorua. Was expecting it to be amazing, wasn’t. Yellowstone and Iceland, yes.

We've done that drive from Las Vegas across to Yosemite too, a fabulous drive through Death Valley, we pulled off into a tiny town to get coffee, walked into a bakery and they were selling out favourite German beer.
Reading this thread I tend to wonder why some people go places, they seem to want everywhere to be like home.

So much more than I was expecting. I loved the whole experience of getting in a car and driving along just seeing what was next and who we would meet next. I don't think there's anywhere I regret going to, it's all worth a visit :-)

I can see this. I was imagining Belfast to be some well hard , gritty city so pleasantly surprised to find wide streets, lots of bars and restaurant's and the troubles turned into art on the buildings.
If you were thinking it was going to be Doha you’d be gutted to find it was just a nice city in a fairly wet/cold part of the world.

bitteroulbag · 21/05/2023 23:26

My son lives in Barcelona in a cool non touristy hood. I love the city more each time I visit.

OMGyoucantbeserious · 21/05/2023 23:29

Just driving back from Santa Monica. CA. Never again. Overcast. Overrated.

Bababette · 21/05/2023 23:34

Dominican Republic! Too much bad to put it all here

HRTQueen · 21/05/2023 23:34

Bali

LA but then few people I know who have visited like the place

Melbourne. Yes it’s nice has nice shops and restaurants but that’s about it, it’s the great city that it’s made out to be (by those from Melbourne)
