Do I want a Monday or Tuesday off?

having had a difficult year with lots of things, I have just gone down to working four days a week. I have been offered a Monday or Tuesday off. Which do I choose?
children are older so don’t need to worry about childcare.
obviously a three day weekend would be great, but so might splitting up the week a bit?
it is in a school so will only affect one bank holiday.
I do sport/exercise so having a Tuesday off means that it’s easier to split up workouts away from the weekend?

wwyd?

Tuesday. I find the traffic worse on a Tuesday.

Truestorypeeps · 11/05/2023 21:35

100% Monday for me. If the choice was Monday or Wednesday and split the week, the decision would be a bit more difficult, but I'd still pick Monday I think for the longer weekend. Monday I also find people are in worse form thinking about the long week ahead of them, so it's a good day to miss for that reason to.

Ginger1982 · 11/05/2023 21:44

Hmm, I think I'd take Tuesday off. I think I'd worry issues might arise on a Monday that I wouldn't know about until Tuesday.

Getmoveon14 · 11/05/2023 21:53

Tuesday. The 'Sunday night' feeling isn't really there when you've only got one day until your next break. Also it means you stay in the swing of things more. There are always the holidays for a more extended break.

Team Monday, I used to be Tues, changed to Mondays after a few yrs amd live it, no Monday blues for me just brunch with friends 😁also end up accruing lots of lieu due to the bank hols so bonus!

LadyJ2023 · 11/05/2023 22:28

Always Monday gives a lovely longer weekend. Can't be bothered getting ready for day on day off

mathsquestions · 11/05/2023 22:36

Not answering your question

What’s the difference between a five day week and a four day week? The salary!

Please make sure your workload is also reduced by 20%

Monday off would be nicer for me. But I reckon Tuesday off would be better for work. Stuff has a habit of coming up on Mondays, co-workers might be more jealous, and I'd feel at greater risk of losing it because everyone will want Monday off.

Monday! I've worked part time for 6 yrs. due to family looking after my kids on a Monday for me I always worked a Monday. It meant I only got 0.6 allowance for the Monday holidays but had to use a full day holiday.

Since my daughter started school I don't work Monday as they have so many holidays on Mondays. I now get extra days off as still get the 0.6 for every bank holiday. I love that I don't get the dread on a Sunday night. Love it! I will never work a Monday now while I'm working part time.

Lifeinlists · 11/05/2023 22:50

Monday definitely. I've done both (teaching) and having Monday off gives you more possibilities eg weekend away and no Sunday night blues either.
And it divides your week up more efficiently.
If you go in on Monday then are off the next day, you won't be able to switch off quite as easily.

but it will only affect one bank holiday a year, so I don’t think it’s worth doing Tuesday just for that…

It can be beneficial to have Monday off. Assuming you're 0.8 FTE, whenever other employees get a Bank Holiday Monday many employers will credit you with with 0.8 of a day, either to take at another time, or as financial compensation.

Blanketpolicy · 11/05/2023 23:05

I hate Monday mornings, having Tuesday off would make it feel like I had two Monday mornings a week.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 11/05/2023 23:13

I’d have Monday off. It’s always a busy school day so a good one to miss.

lunaloveroo · 11/05/2023 23:29

Mondays

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2023 23:30

Definitely a Monday, 3 day weekend every week. In school jobs you usually only
benefit from the first May BH although sometimes easter falls at the beginning or end of the holidays so maybe an extra. Ps things will just wait for you or be picked up by someone else.

Bunce1 · 12/05/2023 07:42

Monday- it’s an important day of the week- kicks things off. You’re integrated.

Tuesdays will split the week nicely and you’ll get a really good balance of work/life I think.

90stalgia · 12/05/2023 07:44

Monday, for a long weekend every weekend.

theresnolimits · 12/05/2023 07:54

Monday. I had Mondays off. No Sunday night feeling! Also four days in a row allow you to get on with things - no stop/start.

You do lose the first May Bank holiday. You don’t get a day in lieu - I went to my union. You only get it if you ‘normally work’ on that day. But it was worth it - every week had a Bank Holiday for me.

I never found that there were Monday INSETs often - eg at the beginning of Sept term it’s usually Wed/Thurs/Fri. And you don’t have to do INSET if you don’t normally work that day. I would ‘dip’ in if I felt it was worth it. Up to SMT to arrange a repeat session if they felt it was vital.

Team Tuesday here.

Being in at the start of the week really helps at work
Traffic is worst in a tuesday
Lots of cafes, hair dressers and things close on a Monday

crew2022 · 12/05/2023 08:07

I'd go for Monday. I work a four day week and can use my non working Monday when I want to go on a city break sometimes. It's great and flights back on a Monday can be cheaper.

Kate3150 · 12/05/2023 08:11

Monday. It’s so nice on a Sunday evening thinking you haven’t got work the next day

borntobequiet · 12/05/2023 08:14

I’d choose Tuesday for the exercise routine.
When I worked a 4-day week and could arrange my schedule to suit, which I did on a week to week basis, my preferred day off was Wednesday, for the gym, but Tuesday was a close second.
Being in work on a Monday means you get a heads up and a head start for the week.

Stormystar · 12/05/2023 08:15

Monday off, then you have an option of long weekend away

motherofawhirlwind · 12/05/2023 08:17

Mondays - you get the BH allowance to use when you like! I then have a team meeting Tuesday so I don't miss out on any news, updates etc.
