Do I want a Monday or Tuesday off?

having had a difficult year with lots of things, I have just gone down to working four days a week. I have been offered a Monday or Tuesday off. Which do I choose?
children are older so don’t need to worry about childcare.
obviously a three day weekend would be great, but so might splitting up the week a bit?
it is in a school so will only affect one bank holiday.
I do sport/exercise so having a Tuesday off means that it’s easier to split up workouts away from the weekend?

wwyd?

Monday. I’d want a long weekend & no horrible Monday mornings. I’d also be able to go away for long weekends.

itispersonal · 11/05/2023 20:05

If in a school I'd have the Monday off and enjoy a 3 day weekend.

I work in a school and do 4 days and have Thursday off for childcare reasons (and Friday is more relaxed). But most Thursday are used to catch up on housework so it isn't a relax day and have thoroughly enjoyed this extra bank holiday Mondays.

BCBird · 11/05/2023 20:07

I gone to 0.8 this tear and my day off is a Tues. I. In a sch too. With the extra bank holiday it has worked out ok. I.missed one training day as it was in a Tues. Made life difficult so spoke to someone about who said they would give me a day off in lieu if I wished to attend. Also chose to conduct GCSE oral exams on my day off- no cover and can choose a day at a later time. Hope I get Wed nxt year.

catherinewales · 11/05/2023 20:09

Tuesday definitely.

FirstFallopians · 11/05/2023 20:09

Monday without a doubt.

I was calculating a part time workers statutory leave this afternoon- she did 3 days a week, but worked a Monday. We have 12 bank hols this year (NI) and something like 8 of them are on a Monday in 2023/24. It meant she lost a decent chunk of her actual annual leave to make up the difference between her pro-rated annual leave entitlement and the number of bank holidays that needed to be deducted from her allowance.

I have Tueadays off. I like having a catch-up work day, then a day off then 3 to crack on. And I've just had 2 3 day weeks in a row with another one at the end of the month because of all the BHs. It's been lovely.

Now I'm no longer constrained by nursery availability I could swap.my day off to any day but I like my Tuesdays.

CeriB82 · 11/05/2023 20:16

i work 4 days and off on Tuesdays. Works great with the BH.

VintedoreBay · 11/05/2023 20:17

I'd probably chose Tuesday off because it makes it seem like 2 shorter weeks then: a 1-day week and a 3-day week, with rest periods in between to recuperate. Mondays are usually very busy working days (if you work in a M-Fr standard type of environment) so that day also goes very quickly where Tuesday as a working day seems to drag!

Throughalookingglass · 11/05/2023 20:19

Monday!

If you take Tuesdays off, and work Mondays, whenever people need something, they will be told to co tact you ‘tomorrow’. You will end up doing Tuesday’s work on Wednesday!
If you take Mondays off and somebody needs something on Friday, whoever is doing your role on Monday will have to do it!

MullerInk · 11/05/2023 20:20

Lots of places round here are open all weekend but closed on a Monday.

Nomorescreentime · 11/05/2023 20:22

I have Mondays off. It’s the best feeling on a Sunday night! I do all my meal planning for the week on the Monday. It’s also quiet in shops etc, good for inset days and if you have a weekend away. I also get my bank holiday leave to take at other times so it feels like I have more annual leave.

megletthesecond · 11/05/2023 20:25

Mondays off. You should get the bank holiday annular leave calculation added back to your leave quota.
Long weekend every week. Errands on the Monday in peace.

bettynutkins · 11/05/2023 20:26

I would ask what the bank holiday policy is. I work part time and only get a part time allocation of the bank holiday entitlement. So instead of 8 bank holidays, I'm allocated 2. But because I work every Monday I need 7 to cover all the Monday bank holidays. I should have enough holiday for 5 weeks but am only left with 3 once all my Mondays have been deducted, doesn't seem fair! Especially as due to childcare I can't work any other day to make the holiday back (Which was offered but is no help).

cptartapp · 11/05/2023 20:26

Pinkmagic1 · 11/05/2023 19:42

Monday definitely. Your bank holiday entitlement will be added to your holiday pro rata, so you can take them when you wish, not when is dictated to you.

This. I don't work Mondays but my colleague does. Foe every BH Monday she has to use a days leave. I don't, and I get an extra one in lieu to use whenever I want.

seven201 · 11/05/2023 20:26

I work in a school and Monday is my day off. Tuesday is my most stressful day, but that's because I have no frees and a meeting at lunch. I do have to go through my emails Monday evening otherwise I have no clue what's going on. I'd prefer a Friday, but I do really like the long weekend and not having that Sunday evening feeling!

familyissues12345 · 11/05/2023 20:29

I like having Mondays off, but the nature of my job means I have certain things I have to do before my working week starts (prep and shopping), so I like having Mondays off so that sort of thing doesn't encroach on my time with my family - I wish I could do it during my paid hours but it just doesn't work Envy

If I didn't have that, I'd probably go for Tuesday off. I do sometimes feel like I miss stuff not working Mondays

HunterHearstHelmsley · 11/05/2023 20:30

If Monday or Tuesday are the only options then I'd go with Monday off. I used to work shifts and hating having to work Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. It always felt really disruptive.

For me, I'd want Monday, Wednesday or Friday off.

Bordey · 11/05/2023 20:34

The option to have weekends away is worth having Mondays off, plus other reasons people have said. It's great.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 11/05/2023 20:37

Monday. Schools usually do things like parents evening and open evenings later in the week. It's shit coming in on your day off to do that sort of thing. I used to have a Tuesday off and didn't like it.

TenoringBehind · 11/05/2023 20:38

I have Monday off but actually I think Tuesday would be better. I like to meet up with friends but everywhere here is shut on Mondays. Appreciate it might be different in other/more urban areas of the country

ehb102 · 11/05/2023 20:52

One thing I learned from here is that if you work part time you don't want to work on a Monday because a very large chunk of your annual leave will disappear in bank holidays.

SaveMeFromForearms · 11/05/2023 21:00

bluebird3 · 11/05/2023 20:03

I'd choose to work Monday and have Tuesday off. I've worked part time for years and don't like having Mondays off. You miss out on plans for the week. Might not seem important but I always feel on the back foot coming in on a tuesday. I also find it hard to miss out on the 'how was your weekend?' chat. Seems silly but everyone has already done that by Tuesday and it feels less sociable with my colleagues now.

Yes, this.

When I worked Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, I felt I connected with people across the week. Missing out on the Monday chat was, weirdly, a bit sad and isolating.

I'm in England, not NI, but I have the same problem - I work part time including Mondays and have lost lots of annual leave to take when I want because of all the bank holiday Mondays this year Sad

OP, have Mondays off and work Tue-Fri! Every weekend will be a 3 day weekend, you can easily have weekends away, and you should get 0.8 extra days of annual leave for every bank holiday Monday.

MuggleMe · 11/05/2023 21:29

I've done a variety of pt patterns, and for me, I prefer having all my working days together so I can properly switch off when I'm not working rather than finding out what's going on but not have time to deal with it before my day off and have it festering while I'm supposed to be relaxing.

Depends on role though, for a project management role I did, it was easier to have a day mid week so I could tee people up to doing things while I was off.

PrincessConsuelaBanana · 11/05/2023 21:29

I would definitely recommend Mondays off. I have worked 4 days a week having Mondays off and having Tuesdays off, and much prefer Mondays off. The three day weekend feels like so much more of a significant break than 2 days then 1 day later in the week.
Also no Sunday blues when you don’t work Mondays! I thought that my Sunday blues would just transfer onto Monday but they don’t, Whereas when you have Tuesdays off you still get Monday blues.
Easier to go away for a 3 day weekend break if you don’t work Mondays too.
