Two dogs shot in London by police

I’m usually very empathetic and recently even posted on an animal testing post but I just can’t find any compassion in my heart for out of control and dangerous animals at the moment, it’s just getting ridiculous. I obviously feel for the owner who I hope gets some kind of mental support/ counselling.

It’s so confusing as I’m usually so compassionate, I guess having a small child and the number of dog attacks does something to your brain? I hate walking past Bullies with my baby in the pram. Even normal dogs I’m starting to get very hesitant about. For context I usually cry if I step on a silver worm in the bathroom so this is a very strange reaction for me.

Interested to hear what other dog owning/ non dog owning people think. Also the government are going to have to step in at some point right?

If question whether dogs of that size should be wandering a farm.

Local children might play on the woods, need around with hay bales, etc,. They shouldn't, but they're kids. What would happen if these large, potentially very aggressive dogs encountered children?

I can't believe a pp thought the public should have the right to scan any dogs microchip using an app to gain personal information about any owner 😮.

Never saw the post, but it is a legal requirement in the UK a dog in public should wear an id tag with the owners name and address - is having that information available from chip any different?

Wait till you hear what they can do to people driving cars. It's blow your mind.

The shooting is being investigated by the Met following a public outcry.

It's not often I feel sorry for the police, but I really do this time. Had those dogs not been destroyed, and had bitten someone else (perhaps seriously) they wouldn't have got the lickings of a dog themselves (as we say here).

It was a horrible thing to happen, but it was the right thing.

Pemba · 11/05/2023 12:19

Well goodness knows the Met police have made a LOT of mistakes the last few years, but in this case I think they did the right thing absolutely and I feel sorry for the officers concerned. I trust they'll be exonerated.

The dogs were dangerous and the owner left them no choice. Something needs to be done about idiots keeping and mistreating dangerous breeds.

Hiya👋😁@wildinthecountry
I was that poster and I stand by my post ☝🏻😁

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/05/2023 15:42

I disagree that they did the right thing they could have catch-poled the dogs (they had one on a catchpole) and removed them and had them assessed (to evaluate whether they were illegal 'type' dogs, and whether they really were dangerous, not to see if they could be rehomed!).

I have seen clips of the footage now, and do not agree they were inherently dangerous based just on the available footage - dangerous in the hands of that owner, there and then, potentially - but in and of themselves if handled sensibly, no.

I think the outcome probably would still be euthanasia, but a humane euth, which this absolutely was not, a low risk euth, which again this absolutely was not (and by that I mean low risk to humans and dogs, this was not that, in any way).

I understand WHY the police officers took this course of action - they lack the training and experience necessary to de-escalate humans. They have NO skills in assessing and handling dogs at incidents and that puts officers, public and dogs at risk.

ThisOldThang · 11/05/2023 17:05

Aggressive dogs shot by police. 🤷

Job well done in my opinion.

Boomboom22 · 11/05/2023 17:08

What public outcry? The one in major support of them? I would strongly advise all on this thread who praise the police action to make the met and your mp aware as otherwise the psycho dog lovers will succeed in making the met think they were wrong when the only outcry I have seen is they don't act like this much more swiftly in other cases.

Thesharkradar · 11/05/2023 17:26

@Boomboom22 I agree with you but at the same time maybe it's counterproductive to demonize the dog lovers by calling them psychos? Most of them I think cant help the way they are.
(I dont know what the answer is though)
Thanks for the link to the MET page, I will be using it to say I think they did the right thing in very difficult circumstances!

I can't believe a pp thought the public should have the right to scan any dogs microchip using an app to gain personal information about any owner 😮.

thinking about this.....
imo the chip needs to be scannable by anyone with the free app, but the app could just be a way for you to report the dog to the dog database people, without showing you any information about the dog.
And a way to report unchipped dogs by scanning them & when it shows as unchipped you have an option to upload the photo to the dog database

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/05/2023 17:41

How do you propose to get near enough to scan:

My dog on a lead you just don't like the looks of and i don't want you to
A dog behaving dangerously
A dog with an aggressive owner
A stray dog that won't come near you.

To scan you need to have a dog that stands still and you need to run the scanner all over the dog from the back of the neck down around the chest, down the shoulders, legs and along the back, its a thorough thing as chips can and do migrate (no matter how much chip companies say they don't much depends on the dog and the skill of the chip implanter. It is supposedly uncommon and yet I have now had three dogs where chips moved and two where chips became unreadable!)

Who is then going to come out and ascertain whether my dog is fine, chipped etc and you're just a busy body who doesnt like that shape of dog, or that my dog is chipped and fine but you can't scan accurately... and so on?

I think given the difficulties in scanning dogs that are genuinely a problem, there will be far more inaccurate reports made than accurate ones.

Well the information is not stored on a government database it is held by private companies and in my opinion would be huge invasion of privacy if anyone walking past would be able to scan and access private information .
You think lone women who live alone would welcome that ?

And also boomboom I have a psychiatric illness and take olanzapine so I guess I'm a psycho dog owner too .🤷🏻‍♀️

I really have no idea what on earth you are talking about.

Have there been many cases of people being attached by lone women ?

TheHandmaiden · 11/05/2023 18:13

There has been no effective outcry and no evidence the police acted outside of their operational guidelines.

It is a non story.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 11/05/2023 18:25

At the vet this morning walked out of the consult room to find a large stocky lab who growled whenever anyone looked in his direction. I havent been around a dog that aggressive for a long time. I sure as hell was not taking any chances, and think the police were entirely justified - it was the owners responsibility to make sure that situation resolved well for his dogs and he escalated things. The owners today were idiots, laughing that he was 'a bit grumpy'. The vet staff were very unimpressed.

Thesharkradar · 11/05/2023 18:40

I would vote with my feet & use a different vet if that occurred again, & be sure to e-mail them & tell them why!

watch that video. These dogs are not aggressive

they did not attack anyone - the leads were tangled when they tried to approach a smaller dog and the owner of the smaller dog fell over . She was not injured and left the scene . A random member of the public had phoned the police saying a woman was on the ground being mauled by dogs - this NEVER happened. The dogs did not attack anyone and no one was injured. The footage shows them barking at the police- that’s normal behaviour for a dog wen surrounded by intimidating police officers. I have a border collie and he would have done the same . These dogs were executed by the police. Absolutely disgusting

Heartrending footage of tasered homeless man kissing and cuddling his dogs who were later shot dead by police

Dogs should have number plates just like cars. One on the front and one on the back.
