How many people do you think this spread would serve?

I’m having a gathering tomorrow and having a slight panic about having enough food! (And about the weather which looks like it will be the worst of the weekend but that’s a separate complaint)

How many people do you think this spread would serve?

3 x quiche
2 x giant pork pie
1 x gammon joint
3 x large loaves crusty bread
2 x tubs falafel
2 x pots hummus
Potato salad
Cous cous salad
4 x blocks of cheese
“Other” salad (a guest is bringing it)
Sliced veggies
“Leaves” Salad

Coleslaw
2x chutneys
2 x sharing bags kettle chips
2 x tubes Pringles

Cake for afters

12

most people will have either quiche or pork pie and then gammon as an add on plus the other bits. Some will have both.

but I’m working on the quiche being about 8” If they’re much larger then obviously more.

I think you can do 20 but it would be a bit modest.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/04/2023 18:05

Some more crisps or pretzels, another dip, grapes, cherry tomatoes. I think it's pretty much fine to be honest.

SquirrellyTheSquirrel · 30/04/2023 18:05

Just for reference, I was basing my answer on the assumption that 3 quiches = 18 slices, and 2 pork pies = 12 slices.

I figured you’d want everyone to be able to have a slice of each if they wanted.

In my case, I don’t eat quiche or pork pie so would probably have more than the “allocated” 0.2 of a block of cheese, and more of the bread, gammon, and hummus etc.

I think you need to up the peripherals. More bread and cheese, some fruit, maybe breadsticks, more hummus. How about a few cocktail sausages? Predictable but a crowd pleaser and easy to do in bulk.

Garlic bread is another way to easily bulk it out.

tescocreditcard · 30/04/2023 18:06

Could you serve something hot with it? A big bowl of chilli and tortilla chips

Ducatifan · 30/04/2023 18:06

before you answered, I thought 12.

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/04/2023 18:07

Lunch or dinner?

I think you've gone under - 2 bags of crisps?!

universityhelp · 30/04/2023 18:08

I was going to say about twenty before I read your answer - three loaves of bread would be a lot for 6-8 people! And four blocks of cheese. I'd possibly do more crisps and maybe more bread just in case.

dontgobaconmyheart · 30/04/2023 18:09

I'd have said 10 or so. I think you're right to nip to the shop if it's for 20 OP but at the same time how much do those sorts of things really get eaten when you go to people's houses, the more substantial items are the ones I'd focus on - eg if every person wanted a piece of quiche, meat, pork pie - is there enough of those for that. The rest of it's just snacking or side salad.

I think I'd add in a large oven tray of mediterranean roast veg, a big serving of chicken drumsticks, some sausage rolls, a big pot of spicy rice or similar, more falafel and houmous, a couple of pre packaged deli meat selections and lots of spare bags of crisps/crackers. All cheap and cheerful and something more substantial if people want it then.

Are there not any desserts?

TheHandbag · 30/04/2023 18:09

I'd head down to your local tesco tomorrow morning first thing and buy extras.

You'll find big bags of veggie samosas and spring rolls in the world food section of the freezer aisle. Grab a few bags of those.

For the cheese, add crackers and grapes & turn it into a proper cheese board.

Buy 2 trays of fresh chicken drumsticks, add a marinade & roast.

Add another vegetarian main and then some melons and a bowl of tangerines & that should do it.

3 x quiche
2 x giant pork pie
1 x gammon joint
3 x large loaves crusty bread
2 x tubs falafel
2 x pots hummus
Potato salad
Cous cous salad
4 x blocks of cheese
“Other” salad (a guest is bringing it)
Sliced veggies
“Leaves” Salad

Coleslaw
2x chutneys
2 x sharing bags kettle chips
2 x tubes Pringles

CateringPanic · 30/04/2023 18:09

  • another bag of sharing crisps
  • another quiche
  • 2x packet of chicken pop things

Good grief, 6 people?!? I genuinely don't know if that a joke or not 😳

I'd have thought that's fine for 12-15, OP, but yes I'd add more for 20.

Bemyclementine · 30/04/2023 18:11

Halloumi.

mackthepony · 30/04/2023 18:11

Bag of oven chips and job down??

mackthepony · 30/04/2023 18:11

6 people??

Who are you feeding, the Flintstones

confusedlots · 30/04/2023 18:13

I would say 10 people?

Okunevo · 30/04/2023 18:13

Pork doesn't go with falafel/houmous/couscous to me. I'd have gone with lamb or chicken. I'd say about 18 though.

Missingmyusername · 30/04/2023 18:15

Fries!

CateringPanic · 30/04/2023 18:16

I know it doesn’t but I have vegan/veggie guests so it’s for them mostly

I thought we were big eaters and I'd still have said 15-20. And I've got hungry teen boys!

Quiches can be cut into slices of 1/8th each, so 24 slices of quiche. Not sure how giant pork pie is, but I'd assume the same. So 16 slices of pork pie.

So each person can have at least 1 slice of quiche, most can also have a slice of pork pie, slice of gammon, slice of bread or two, some falafel, some salad (5 different types!), some veg with hummous, some cheese and some crisps.

And then cake.

How can that not be enough?

CateringPanic · 30/04/2023 18:18

picked up grapes and bits for an emergency pasta salad!

Some grapes to go with the cheese and crackers

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 30/04/2023 18:22

Definitely wouldn’t stretch to 20 adults that I know!

id get another meat joint and a whole salmon with some prawns.

A pasta dish?

I would also do some fancy and some plain sandwiches.

CateringPanic · 30/04/2023 18:22

Okay so the new menu is:

4 x quiche
2 x giant pork pie
1 x gammon joint

“Other” salad (my brother is making it, not sure what it is)

Sliced veggies
