Borders, the book store.

There was a lovely one near me with a cafe upstairs and I'd take a ton of books to choose my purchases from whilst having a coffee.

Debenham. Still not quite over that one..I used to love all the designers by debenhams ranges. I had a beautiful black corset top from John Richmond c. 2005.

I was another Borders fan - it felt so cool and American!

And definitely Past Times, they used to sell a beautiful medieval manuscript style wrapping paper that I bought every Christmas. I always wanted the jewellery but could never afford it.

I also really loved Neal Street East in Covent Garden, it felt so exotic and you could get some really nice things, I remember buying a gorgeous vintage sari and some velvet mary janes back in the late 90s.

Ebay is quite a good source of Past Times jewellery . . .

Awear.... for all you fellow Irish women. Please tell me I'm not the only one that missses this shop? The sizing was accurate and the clothes were good quality and nice. Miss it so much 😭

Do French Connection and Warehouse still exist?

(Admittedly, the only ones I might actually want to buy anything from these days are Paperchase, Habitat, Borders and Jaeger, but I still think nostalgically of the others.)

Yes! That was one of the shops I couldn't remember.

BillyNoM8s · 26/04/2023 22:32

I also pine for The Body Shop of old - with bath pearls, the fancy glass perfume oil tester bottles, and tote bags.

And Superdrug and Boots before they all started looking derelict and sparse.

myveryownelectrickitten · 26/04/2023 22:34

Oh and y y too to Racing Green, Kookai and Kew!

thatsn0tmyname · 26/04/2023 22:35

John Menzies, Dolcis and Athena. I liked flicking through the giant posters. Oh, an Habitat.

Fordian · 26/04/2023 22:43

BHS

RomanMum · 26/04/2023 22:46

Not a store but in Worthing there was a fabulous second hand book shop we called the house of books. It was a big old terraced house with books crammed into every room and even up the stairs.

Fordian · 26/04/2023 22:52

Debenhams. As a 50+ year old, you knew you could head there and buy a £80-130 dress suitable for a close friend's daughter's wedding. Or something suitable for a works' Xmas Do; Forgiving shaping, upper arms covered, knee length. Sharp. All attended to by middle aged ladies, fetching different sizes.

Gone.

Missmillymollymandy · 26/04/2023 23:02

Richards( I worked at HO and had a staff discount so all of my work clothes were bought there)
Loved The Pier and The Reject Shop and Habitat when setting up home.
There was a fabulous stationery and art
supplies shop on our local high street which sadly closed. Similarly there was a household goods/ hardware/ ironmongers shop that was an absolute treasure trove that also closed.
I needed a light curtain pole and a meter of fabric recently and had to travel far and wide ☹️
Shopping used to be a voyage of discovery but I guess online retail has annihilated our high streets.

Fordian · 26/04/2023 23:02

However do you get your cheap ski-gear nowadays to go to Bulgaria in 1986 without C&A's Clock House?🤔

EarlGreyAndCucumber · 26/04/2023 23:03

I hadn’t realised Neon Sheep had closed!! I miss the Pier and Eddie Bauer.

I’d really like to spend an afternoon with the money from my Saturday job, and browse in Sundelight Fashions, being 16, and looking for new clothes for my perfect size 6 body.

ReginaPerrin · 26/04/2023 23:07

Past Times - very nice jewellery
Woolies - you could do all your Christmas shopping under one roof
Dorothy Perkins - great for cheap vest tops and shorts for holiday
Our Price - spent a lot of my youth in record shops
