Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

@GremlinBlinds ah thanks. That's a shame, I aways thought it would be lovely.

I know! I'm reading all these comments thinking WTF! Absolutely love Paris. Have been countless times and would live there in a heartbeat.

Also loved the Anthony Gormley statues at Crosby beach
Just shows how different we all are I suppose (or there's some right weirdos on here 😂)

I used to live in Paris and absolutely loved it.

Hay on Wye.
Was expecting a buzzing bookish vibe but just found loads of musty depressing second hand bookshops in a shit little town.

@RenoDakota

were you there for the book festival? We really enjoy it ☺️

Abracadabra12345 · 24/04/2023 13:09

Oh dear. I loved Warwick Castle and thought the bird of prey show the best I've ever seen 😁

Maireas · 24/04/2023 13:09

Whaaaat?! Amsterdam?! Did you not visit the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh gallery, the Anne Frank House? Ye gods.

rookiemere · 24/04/2023 13:10

Stratford upon Avon - mostly ugly modern buildings, very disappointed.

What the hell are you doing in Paris to slag it off?! It’s one of the most beautiful cities on earth! We took kids twice when younger and now they are teens just returned from third trip at their request had a brilliant time there nearly a week.

Hate Paris. First time I went as a teen was sexually assaulted walking along in broad daylight. Second time somebody tried to take my bag on the metro. Tried it for a third time and just found it expensive and underwhelming and they all pretend they can't understand anything you say. So many nicer places in France than Paris imo (where funnily enough my French is understood perfectly well!)

I thought the birds of prey were fab too. Yes Warwick castle is an ‘attraction’ now, but surely everyone knows that before they book it? The marketing is pretty clear.

Loria · 24/04/2023 13:10

York.

Everyone was drunk!

Seriously never seen so many pissed up people in such a small space.

Sammyandtheboocas · 24/04/2023 13:11

Another shout for Hebden Bridge being nothing special...there's a bridge and a hellishly expensive artisan food market/craft market, but that's it.

Also Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a bit Emperors New Clothes. You're not allowed to slag it off as makes you sound uncultured, but it's fields with with some stuff in it, and an expensive gift shop and cafe.

Biscuitsneeded · 24/04/2023 13:12

Yeovil isn't exactly a known tourist destination. For a start, I think it's one of the postcodes that attract contextual offers from UCAS!
Totally agree re. the Eden Project. I was very underwhelmed.
Went to Keilder Water in the North East on a day out from another part of Northumbria whilst on holiday a couple of years ago. OK it was a big lake, but the visitor centres were dirty and depressing. It was such a disappointment when we absolutely loved the region overall.

thebestsellingshow · 24/04/2023 13:12

I love Lincoln and really loved Edinburgh! I do agree with the Eden Project though! Far too expensive for what it is. I went not long after it opened and had really positive memories of it and was disappointed when we revisited last summer!

Tittyhill · 24/04/2023 13:12

Leeds castle in Kent

Ohrwurm · 24/04/2023 13:12

Neuschwanstein Castle. You barely get to see anything whilst up there and the tour is so short.

MouthfulofMidwinter · 24/04/2023 13:12

GobbieMaggie · 24/04/2023 12:56

Tate Modern. Total waste of time.

If you like art, presumably you would have enjoyed it, regardless of what temporary exhibitions were on, as the permanent collections are great, but if you don't like art, going there is a bit pointless, anyway, surely? Like me complaining that, I don't know, a tour of Wembley stadium was underwhelming, because I loathe anything football-related.

I used to live in Paris and loved it, and also very much like Amsterdam (where we' spent a week staying on a houseboat with our young son, and didn't encounter any of the booze-and weed-fuelled red light district stuff, which is only in a very specific part of the city, and easily avoidable.

MissyB1 · 24/04/2023 13:13

Burford (Cotswolds), horribly touristy, not that pretty compared to other Cotswold villages, no nice little shops that I would want to browse, rip off prices in every cafe. Tbh a miserable place.

StopFeckingFaffing · 24/04/2023 13:13

@rookiemere Came on this thread to say Stratford upon Avon but see you have beaten me too it. We were bored after about an hour and it was horrifically busy with mostly unpleasant people.

I am shocked how many people are saying Bath. I though it was lovely!

ForgetHim · 24/04/2023 13:13

Hellzbellz25 · 24/04/2023 12:12

Amsterdam for me - went for a ferry day trip at Easter and it was a right dump

@Hellzbellz25 I am so surprised you found this! Whereabouts did you go if you don't mind me asking? I've always thought Amsterdam to be very clean and picturesque.

Whenlifegivesyoulemonsmakelemonade · 24/04/2023 13:14

Controversial given the previous responses but I actually really enjoy visiting Bath! 😅

gettingoldisshit · 24/04/2023 13:14

I loved Warwick Castle and Paris! Ive never heard a good thing from anyone who has visited Bath and was so disappointed when i went to Whitby. I found it full of rude, unfriendly locals and the fish and chips was shit! Ive wanted to visit there for years and was really underwhelmed!

rewilded · 24/04/2023 13:14

Edinburgh. Dull, grey, miserable.
Full of scary loud drunks, vomit on the pavement.

The vomit on the pavement and in shop doorways is what I remember most about Edinburgh absolutely piles of it like when a dog has been sick or regurgitated food Alcolism must be a significant problem there.

concernedalot · 24/04/2023 13:00

Manchester - people were unfriendly, lots of beggars and drunk people milling about, didn't have a nice feel to it.

This has definitely got much worse in the last 10 years or so. I used to work in the centre of Manchester and quite liked it. When I visited recently I was shocked at how many people were living on the streets. It also seems to have become another destination for large groups of people wanting to spend all day getting pissed and rowdy.

userxx · 24/04/2023 13:15

Margarita45 · 24/04/2023 12:13

Controversial one here - the pyramids.
Hassled the whole time by scammers, McDonalds next door and guards moving you on constantly.

Not worth the 6 hour drive each way.

Someone said the similar to me.
