Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

I know nothing about Yeovil but I'd expect that most things would be shut on a Sunday.

Myjobisanightmare · 24/04/2023 11:37

Wasn’t struck with Bath we combined it the Bristol both first visits loved Bristol

That's the strange thing, we like to visit a new town/city at the weekends. The majority of shops in other places have been open on Sunday's, this was the first place where most of it was shut.

Ludlow

Funny quip from my mother - she visited Giant's Causeway, when asked what is it like she replied " not all it's cracked up to be"!😂🤣

Belltentdreamer · 24/04/2023 12:01

Warwick Castle
so expensive to go to but run more like a theme park than a historical building - really hated it.

TheSaturdayAfternoonnessOfIt · 24/04/2023 12:02

Not really. If it's just visiting another town I don't raise my expectations - if it's nothing special I know not to bother going again.

drpet49 · 24/04/2023 12:04

Bath, strange place

Ludlow

I also found that really underwhelming. Had heard it was a lovely market town but 10 minutes and we were done.

crazecatlady2 · 24/04/2023 12:05

Not just for a day (though I wish it had been) Paris. Esp the boat down the Seine. Soooo overrated.

YukoandHiro · 24/04/2023 12:06

I really dislike Cambridge

ShandaLear · 24/04/2023 12:07

Bath was underwhelming. Tell you what surprisingly good thought. Carrickfergus Castle in Northern Ireland. It is this proper fortress castle, costs about a fiver to get in, free parking a few minutes away, hasn’t been health and safetied to within an inch of its life and has a nice ice cream. If it was in the south east of England it would have been sexed up to with an inch of its life and they’d charge you £25 admission and and another £10 for parking.

Mrsjayy · 24/04/2023 12:08

Glastonbury was weird we stayed at a B&B in Yeovil and I agree it is a sad place, the B&B was lovely though.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/04/2023 12:08

Carcassone in France, thought it would be a bit like York. But apart from the tourist trap that is the castle. There is nothing else. Was bored by day 2. Couldn't wait to go home.

EllenLRipley · 24/04/2023 12:08

Both Brighton and Bath mystified me. Brighton was fine, like Blackpool is fine - but why so much fuss?! Bath was very unwelcoming - from the woman at the pub with rooms we stayed at who verbally abused me for booking via Expedia to to the man who told my son he 'couldn't speak properly' when paid for entry to the Roman Baths. I understand locals being irritated by tourists but these people worked in the bloody tourist industry!

Did you visit on a market day and go to the castle?

Lovely little town!!

EllenLRipley · 24/04/2023 12:09

Agree, visited Ludlow some years ago, very underwhelming.

Brighton. XH raved about it but I didn't think it was anything special. Very overcrowded. We walked for ages to get to some restaurant he thought was great and it was just very ordinary food kept warm under lights.

Omg I was going to say Warwick Castle too! So weird and Disney-esque. My friend went there for a day trip (4+ hours away ish), I warned her but she loved it! Just not my cup of tea perhaps.

OP you should have continued on to Sidmouth. Lovely town! What lured you to Yeovil of all places?

Glastonbury and Bath both weird vibes imo.

lkkjhg · 24/04/2023 12:11

Dublin. It was a Sunday and raining.

MouthfulofMidwinter · 24/04/2023 12:11

No. Everywhere I go is radiant with beauty and interest.

Honestly, OP, you travelled to a smallish town you'd never been to before (presumably a not inconsiderable distance if it was intended as a day out) on a Sunday, to go shopping? And were surprised shops weren't open?

Hellzbellz25 · 24/04/2023 12:12

Amsterdam for me - went for a ferry day trip at Easter and it was a right dump
