Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Aberystwyth and Dublin.
Also, looking further afield, Barbados.

I spent a lot of time in Aberystwyth, it was even more boring in the 90s before Sunday opening.

Strichen in Aberdeenshire.

Warwick Castle
so expensive to go to but run more like a theme park than a historical building - really hated it.

Felt the same, was so disappointed. I recall walking around with the wikipedia page open on my phone as there were no boards/signs with any historical information on them at all!

Edinburgh. Dull, grey, miserable.
Full of scary loud drunks, vomit on the pavement.
When we arrived at our hotel my husband warned me to avoid broken glass across the pavement and it was still there when we left.

Oh no that sounds terrible the drunks I mean the buildings are just grey because of the sandstone.

Eden Project..... Expensive bimble around a garden centre....Grin

I was just going to say that !

Paris. Never been so disappointed!

Bondi Beach
Surfers Paradise

I agree with Bondi, there are much, much nicer beaches in Australia. Surfer's Paradise was OK, the views from the sky tower thing were amazing but once on the ground it was a bit like Blackpool with sun

I was just going to say that !

Exactly how I felt about that very expensive day out 🤣

Meecrowavay · 24/04/2023 12:47

Gretna Green. Just nothing much going on there and felt run down.

OnMyWayToSenility · 24/04/2023 12:47

Wasn't impressed with the Eden centre either!

Yeovil is a run down train town, it's a dump 🤣 no idea why you went.

Warwick castle used to be fantastic and now it's awful never again.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 24/04/2023 12:48

Portmerion. Had wanted to go since childhood. Cost a fortune (for what is was). Pissed with rain, nowhere to sit. Mind you I did have 2 grumpy teens in tow.

Floralnomad · 24/04/2023 12:48

Waddesdon last Christmas , very very disappointing, we were back in the car within the hour , as were another couple who used the same shuttle bus up and back with us . The only good thing was that I’m a NT member so it was cheap .

stbrandonsboat · 24/04/2023 12:49

Chester. Dh promised me it was pretty and historic etc. It wasn't.

We did then manage to find a little Roman museum and that cheered us up.

Ericaequites · 24/04/2023 12:49

Florida is very disappointing, especially Disney. At least in Hades you’d meet interesting people.

Oxford

Thelastofbus · 24/04/2023 12:49

I’ve definitely never thought of Yeovil as a town to visit. Lots of smaller towns shut down on a Sunday so I’m not
surprised it was quiet. I don’t think I’d head anywhere without checking out what there was to see and do first. Lots of these market towns really need to be visited on market day to see them at their best.

Softoprider · 24/04/2023 12:51

We visited 'The Deep' in Hull at Easter.

Oh dear. It stank of fish and stale sweat from the masses of dirty unwashed scruffy people. We had to visit the toilets to keep washing our hands. Some of the exhibits were interactive and grubby would be an understatement.
The penguin pool was small and horrid. The cafe .. oh my days.. I gipped when we walked past. The slop they served on that day was apparently Lasagne. Families were sitting tucking into plates of it. The smell was something I will never forget.

I know it was a sea attraction but why did it have to smell as bad as that?

There were times when I walked past people who smelled so bad of sweat I thought they were doing it on purpose.
The shop was OK though

Whichwhatnow · 24/04/2023 12:51

Not the whole day but stonehenge. Yes, it's obviously still amazingly impressive in an objective sense but it's just so... small. And you can't get anywhere near the stones.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 24/04/2023 12:51

Warwick castle has been merlined. They’ve utterly ruined it by trying to make it Thorpe park/ lego land.
i avoid anything Merlin touches, sealife centre is another one they’ve done the same with.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/04/2023 12:52

I'm just baffled as to why anyone would go to Yeovil. It's hardly a destination notorious for a great day out. Lots of poverty, drugs, lack of jobs and not one flagship shop on the high street. Used to live there. Wouldn't go back.

Plenty of stuff to do around and about though, and the countryside is glorious.

Eastie77Returns · 24/04/2023 12:53

Not exactly a day trip but I found New York awful the first time I visited. I’ve since been several times for work and my opinion hasn’t really changed. I just don’t understand all the fuss.

DanceMonster · 24/04/2023 12:53

Yeovil doesn’t exactly have the reputation of being a nice place for a day trip though does it?
In a similar vein though, we once went to Melton Mowbray thinking it would have lots of nice pie shops/food market etc, and it was a shit hole 😂. My children were like ‘why have you brought us here?’.

I know Yeovil quite well. It really isn't the sort of place you'd want to go to for a day out. It's useful for certain things - like the cinema, and getting our car serviced. But as towns go, it's quite unattractive, and lots of the shop units in the town centre are empty.

The country park is quite nice for a walk though. But, again, only if you're already there for another reason.

Edwardandtubbs · 24/04/2023 12:54

Another one for Portmeirion, was so excited as I expected it to be beautiful and astonishing, whereas it is tired, dilapidated and tacky. Thought there might at least be a big factory shop for the pottery but there was just one tourist tat shop selling a fraction of the pottery range and then a load of other crockery like Emma Bridgewater (?).
Can't go up/into loads of the architecture as they are the holiday lets and for residents only. Spectacular views of the natural landscape but the place itself is just shit.

Amsterdam for me - went for a ferry day trip at Easter and it was a right dump

Yes!! I spent a day in Amsterdam and thought the same. When I arrived they were clearing up all the detritus from the night before and it was dirty and smelt of piss and weed. Then spent the rest of the day trying to avoid being run over by cyclists! It didn't inspire me to ever return.

Whichwhatnow · 24/04/2023 12:54

Eden Project for me too! We went to see NIN play the night before which was amazing but obviously did the actual Project the next day as it was included in the ticket. I remember walking around desperately trying to get some enjoyment out of it 😆
