Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Dawlish.

I remember it being lovely as a child but we stopped there on the first day of our holiday and the entire seafront is now dominated by this hideous concrete sea wall that you can barely see over. I know there was some damage a few years ago but I wish they had come up with a more appropriate replacement.

StillMedusa · 24/04/2023 16:05

Totally agree about the Eden Project: overpriced overhyped and I've had better afternoons in a nice garden centre.

Plymouth: went to visit my DD1 when she was on a Uni placement there and had my tyres slashed!!!

Hate to say it but the Natural History Museum... I think Oxford NHM is far better and you have the Pitts Rivers adjoining it which is equally fab. Oxford centre is sad and run down now though.

Worst places ever : Muscle Beach, Miami... OMG. Blackpool with weed shops everywhere (we were staying overnight before going to Hawaii) Utterly tacky!

San Francisco. The Sealions at Pier 39 are fab to watch (and the clam chowder is THE best food I have ever tasted) but the shops are just all tourist rubbish and the homeless drug addicts are the saddest thing I have ever witnessed.. on a 2 month tour of the USA it was the only place my DD and felt truly unsafe and would never go back.

Arniesleftleg · 24/04/2023 16:06

@Vinvertebrate that's hilarious 🤣. You'll have to get payback now 🤣

Just curious: why does Yeovil qualify for universities making contextual offers?

I may have that wrong, but I know someone who lives there who has a very capable son and she alluded to him getting easier offers than some candidates because of the school he was at.

Did you visit on a market day and go to the castle?

Lovely little town!!

I love Ludlow. They have the market, the castle and lots of independent shops. There are also some lovely places to eat with home-cooked food. If you like places with typical high street branded shops, then go to one of them. If you like something different and unique go to Ludlow.

Controversial one here - the pyramids.
Hassled the whole time by scammers, McDonalds next door and guards moving you on constantly.

Not worth the 6 hour drive each way.

God, McDonalds, really? Next to such ancient monuments, that's unbelievably wrong.

MartinFowler · 24/04/2023 16:11

Pmsl at the poster berating Nottingham because they decided on a whim that Phoenix Park must be an actual park 🤪.

I love most places mentioned that I've been to.

Love the giants causeway and Warwick castle. Also love Edinburgh, Morecambe and Whitby. Carcassonne was nice enough.

Didn't like Sydney, Woking, Stoke on Trent and most of the Peak District. Also, never go to Maryport.

MartinFowler · 24/04/2023 16:12

"God, McDonalds, really? Next to such ancient monuments, that's unbelievably wrong."

And Pizza Hut. And lots and lots of litter blowing in the breeze. Grim.

Funny quip from my mother - she visited Giant's Causeway, when asked what is it like she replied " not all it's cracked up to be"!😂🤣

I thought the exact same about giant’s causeway; a real “is that it” feeling.

I forgot another one I disliked San Francisco! We went in 2013 for our honeymoon with Las Vegas and Hawaii and didn't like it, everything seem to shut very early in night and very bad homeless problem but seemed to be more crazy homeless (like really crazy behaviour in the day ) we had a man naked on skateboard keep going into to our tour bus . And just very rundown . Also found Las Vegas very overrated but did enjoy it, crazy amount of alcohol drank by both sets of parents with their children in pushchairs at midnight/1am walking down strip. Hawaii was amazing and I'd go again in heartbeat! 💗

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 24/04/2023 16:18

I actually wish we had just spent 2 weeks in Hawaii !

York.

Everyone was drunk!

Seriously never seen so many pissed up people in such a small space.

I live in York and grew up here. It's a fab place to love with kids and teenagers, and a beautiful city - but I completely agree with you about all the drunks. York has been turned into a townies destination for stags, hens and piss-ups. It becomes so miserable in a weekend or Bank Holiday, most locals just avoid the city centre. I'd never willingly go into town during schools hols or the run-up to Christmas either! It's utterly depressing when the races or football is on. During those events, the police actually try to kettle the piss-heads into a one-way system at the train station! The council are far more interested in tourism revenue than residents 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s a bloody long way on the tram to Phoenix Park from central Nottingham too (it’s my work route!) so you’d think the someone would at least Google it before taking the journey 😂.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/04/2023 16:20

I'm
In York at the moment. Did a scaffolding tour of the Minster. My favourite place! Bloody cold today though. Slowest service in cafe Nero ever though.

Ozgirl75 · 24/04/2023 16:20

I recently took my two boys to Warwick Castle and we had a great day there! We liked the shows, liked the time tower, climbing up the towers and battlements and something must have sunk in about the history because we were in Stratford the next day and someone mentioned Richard Neville and my youngest son just casually went “oh the Earl of Warwick” and I was like this 😮 at him.
Mind you, I liked Stratford too! Lots of nice places to eat, the Guildhall museum was fun, as was the Mad museum.
I also like Paris and loads of other places mentioned here though 😁

It's not Edinburgh people, it's the stag and hen parties.

Edinburgh is an architectural wonder, full of history and culture, great food, interesting walks and a fantastic place to live. Plus one
Of the world's best festivals every August.

It's just spoiled by the dildo brigade who come to get drunk only. Hopefully they will all move on to York now as the in-place.

Hello from York. We've had enough of the Dildo Brigade, thank you very much! Where else can we ship them off to?

Nannydoodles · 24/04/2023 16:22

ilfracombe today! Always imagined it a lovely seaside holiday town. But it’s just depressing, shops, hotels all boarded up and men hanging around with beer cans at 11 in the morning.
Actual harbour & the RNLI station was ok though.

Oxford, absolute shithole of a place. Cambridge is overrated but more bearable. Also Chichester, it's a dump.

I really like Chichester!

It's got some lovely buildings, esp around the cathedral (and the cathedral itself is stunning), the palace gardens are lovely, it still has a decent range of shops, pubs and restaurants (although it has also got the usual chains, like Cote and The Ivy) and there are lovely places to visit nearby (Fishbourne Roman Palace, the Weald & Downland museum at Singleton, lovely beach at West Wittering).

Parking is an utter bastard though. I usually cheat and go with a friend who has a blue badge.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/04/2023 16:27

@AskMeMore you are so right. I live there. Desperate to move to Liverpool!

Kazzyhoward · 24/04/2023 16:27

London. It's all horrendously busy, crowded, expensive and unfriendly.

You may be quite right, I Googled deprivation in South Somerset and was surprised that 2 areas of Yeovil came up (not that I spend much time there, just didn't know it was so poor).

sherbertyellowteddy · 24/04/2023 16:32

Another vote here for Warwick Castle. So expensive. Much prefer our castle days at at any English Heritage ran place. Don't feel like you've been ripped off either if you have a membership.
My DH would add Disneyland Florida. He went when younger and said it was his worst holiday ever. Doesn't see the appeal. I'm not a Disney fan so doesn't appeal to me either.
