Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Warwick Castle
so expensive to go to but run more like a theme park than a historical building - really hated it.

I was about to come on and say Warwick Castle

I don’t even think it was like a theme park as we had annual Merlin Passes to get in to all sorts of places and would take our own picnic and drinks and I would never spend a penny all day
Apart from getting you into the grounds and a few of the smaller “games” being free everything else was charged for.

It was quite a few years ago but of all the Merlin stuff I took dc to it was the one place that even the dc were disappointed about.

Great Yarmouth, Torquay, Cannes.

I once had to spend an hour in Great Yarmouth.

It was more than enough.

I've visited and enjoyed many of the places mentioned here, I can usually find something interesting in most places but I have to agree with Melton Mowbray...it was like a deserted town in a sci-fi film, not a soul on the streets, we couldn't find anything to do anywhere, not even a cafe or somewhere selling pork pies open. My DH and I still joke that there must be a secret underground Melton Mowbray somewhere with a vibrant buzzing culture 😄

Blankscreen · 24/04/2023 15:48

I love Bath!

Brighton is just dirty. Feels really scummy in some areas. I just don't get the love.

The great let down for us though was Lapland UK. Biggest waste of nearly £600 ever.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/04/2023 15:48

I was underwhelmed by Scara Brae. We drove for 2 days to go to the oldest settlement in Europe for history nerds DS and DH. All I could think was "it's smaller than I expected".

London. I've never seen an underground in as bad as a condition in London.

Every other subway that I've been in has elevators/escalators. The part of the London underground that I was on, didn't have elevators/escalators. I saw a woman carry and struggle down six flights of stairs with a pram.

Probably because you were at the end of a line where they’re not necessary (when the station isn’t underground). All central abd most zone 2 stations have escalators, in fact mine in zone 4 has a lift.

Kennykenkencat · 24/04/2023 15:51

I have also had Centre court Tickets at Wimbledon and kick myself for not flogging them to a tout on the way in.

Would watch the tennis on the tv but even Boris Beckers first ever match at Wimbledon couldn’t get me interested. It was also quite cold and I just wanted to mainline coffee to keep warm and they wouldn’t let you take drinks to your seats

and the cost of a coffee was extortionate.

PrettyMaybug · 24/04/2023 15:53

Rhyl. Also Blackpool. Used to be such fun, nice, lots to do etc.

Rhyl is an utter shit-tip now. Also Blackpool. And everything is Blackpool now is crazy expensive!

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 15:53

Los angeles

PrettyMaybug · 24/04/2023 15:53

Stonehenge is a let down too. Have to pay to walk around it. !!!

13Bastards · 24/04/2023 15:53

Oxford. It just felt like there was no atmosphere. We left early.

Thegoodbadandugly · 24/04/2023 15:54

Oxford absolutely hated the place!

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 15:54

Bristol.

Very grey

ThreeRingCircus · 24/04/2023 15:55

Totally agree about Birmingham Sea Life Centre. I've been to others that have been really good but the Birmingham one was rubbish.....queued for absolutely ages and then we were done in about an hour. Even the kids were bored.

Also Cromer, and actually we found Norfolk in general really dull and the people unfriendly towards tourists in general. They made their point though as I won't be going back.

Clacton - absolute dump
Nothing there, loads of shops shut down.
Would never ever go there again

If you Clacton's a dump, you should pop along the coast to Jaywick.

Clacton seems like paradise on earth after visiting Jaywick.

@rookiemere Came on this thread to say Stratford upon Avon but see you have beaten me too it. We were bored after about an hour and it was horrifically busy with mostly unpleasant people.

I am shocked how many people are saying Bath. I though it was lovely!

SUA has been completely spoiled by the charity shops , McDonalds , Greggs and CEX shops that have now almost taken over

Horrible place now unfortunately

I thought it was meant to be a sort of hippyish chilled place but I was racially abused twice in 4 hours! Then we went back to the car and someone had keyed it on 3 panels. A cafe we parked adjacent to had CCTV and they said they "couldn't get involved" and refused to review the footage. The public toilets has needles all over the floor and the cafes etc were all really expensive - £8.50 for a cheese toastie! It was a really unpleasant day tbh! I fully appreciate that others will have a wonderful time but I do not recommend it to people on a low income or non white families!

Have you not watched Happy Valley?

BTW a lot of the locals are on low incomes!

SuperGinger · 24/04/2023 15:57

Mont St Michel, awful place, packed.

Not the whole day but stonehenge. Yes, it's obviously still amazingly impressive in an objective sense but it's just so... small. And you can't get anywhere near the stones.

Agreed!

Woahtherehoney · 24/04/2023 16:00

New York - been twice, don’t get the hype AT ALL.
Cambridge - dull dull dull
Brisbane - apart from the Gold Coast I wasn’t overly enamoured with it (I bloody loved Melbourne though)

I LOVE Paris and Dublin so different to some on this thread!

I lived near Melton Mowbray between houses. You probably couldn’t find anywhere open because we had joked when we were there that it was a “local town for local people”(apologies to those who live in MM)

Funny quip from my mother - she visited Giant's Causeway, when asked what is it like she replied " not all it's cracked up to be"!😂🤣

My grandad used to say it was 'worth seeing but not worth going to see ' ..he lived in derry so only an hour away but still not worth the trek apparently 🤣

Yes this is exactly what we thought! Weird place.

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 24/04/2023 16:03

Warwick Castle has been operated by Merlin for years. I can remember comments about it being over-commercialised from my childhood in the 90s. It feels like a theme park because that’s what Merlin do, I’m afraid.

If you want a ‘proper’ castle in the area then you are much better off going to Kenilworth, although as it is a ruin you really do need a nice day.

tailinthejam · 24/04/2023 16:04

Cambridge. We don't live all that far away, and could easily visit there regularly, but I find it overwhelmingly dull and expensive. I feel as though I'm almost obliged to like it, but I don't.

Much prefer Oxford
