Things other people eat that you find strange

Inspired by the many threads I’ve seen over the years about foods YOU eat that other people find weird…

What ‘normal’ foods do other people eat that you just can’t get on board with?

For me, it’s pizza and chips. I think it’s such a bizarre combination for a dinner and wouldn’t ever put the two together. Nothing to do with the carb overload (I love garlic bread and lasagne…), I just think they don’t go! DP very much disagrees and says it’s a perfectly normal combo Grin

White chocolate
Seafood
snails
offal
pig’s trotters
chickens feet
etc
etc

So far I love everything mentioned above 🍕 🍟 😁

I worked with a woman years ago who used to have marmalade and cheese in her toast for breakfast - both together. I don't like marmalade at all but with cheese is just weird to me!

Jam and cheese is actually a great combo. Someone (on here, maybe?) once recommended a cheese, pickle and jam sandwich - I was dubious, but swiftly converted.

Princesspuppy · 22/04/2023 19:54

Olives. They look like the perfect appetizer, much healthier than a bowl of crisps or nuts etc.

I really really want to like them. But they are rank 🤢

Raisins 😖and they’re in so much.

Bananas in things, and banana-flavoured things. So I don’t like banoffee, or banana splits, or banana milkshakes. But will happily eat just a banana.

I didn't think I was going to agree with any of these, but I agree with this one. Raisins in savoury food are very unappealing. Not sure why, as other dried fruit (prunes, apricots) in savoury food are totally acceptable to me.

I used to work with someone who ate the skins on Kiwi fruit. They are just so bristly and rough. I couldn’t understand how she could do it.

Ha! You probably used to work with me, I get so much grief when I have a kiwi in my lunchbox 🤣

Ilovedthe70s · 22/04/2023 20:05

Tiramisu, cannot bear it .

I don’t care who has made it and how amazingly moreishly delicious and superior you think yours/mother’s/uncle’s or whoever has produced it to their secret family recipe it is a crime against humanity!

And I feel better for sharing that.

DidyouNO · 22/04/2023 20:06

Coffee. So not a food but yuk!

I don't get why people love it. It's weird and bitter and smells like bonfires.

Clevs · 22/04/2023 20:09

Peas
Baked beans
Coffee
Salted caramel
Biscoff

1WomanWonder · 22/04/2023 20:14

Thought everyone was bonkers until someone mentioned flavoured chocolate 💩😖 and now I realise we are all bonkers in our own ways.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/04/2023 20:15

Squash (the drink). Awful and it costs your teeth.

Any kind of microwaveable meat.

Beige freezer meat.

Any ready meal. Genuinely not eaten one for over 25 years.

Stravaig · 22/04/2023 20:16

Carb on carb, beige on beige. Ugh. Deathly dull and sits like cement.
Foods masquerading as other foods. Eat vegetables, not plants tortured into fake 'meats'!!!

However, a chargrilled burger topped with peanut butter and banana is normal and delicious; so is a hummus and crispy seaweed on wholegrain sandwich. I have spoken.

Pushmepullyou · 22/04/2023 20:18

Today from the thread I have eaten:
olives
artichokes
skin on kiwi
cheese (obvs!)
Coffee
sports drink
fish
black pudding
peanut butter
fake meat sausage
gin and tonic
chocolate Brazil nuts

I really don’t like potatoes though. In any form other than crisps

BarelyLiterate · 22/04/2023 20:24

Instant coffee.

I understand that, back in the day, not everyone could get real coffee or the equipment to make it, so they settled for heavily marketed instant, despite the fact that it tastes disgusting. But nowadays, we all know what decent coffee is supposed to taste like, affordable ground coffee is sold in every supermarket in the country, a serviceable cafetière costs a few quid, and using it doesn’t take any longer than making instant.
So WHY do people still drink instant muck?

ThePoshUns · 22/04/2023 20:24

Broken eggs.
Love boiled, fried or poached.
Scrambled or omelettes make me sick.

I leave the skin on kiwis these days as it's full of nutrients and I don't mind the texture.

HurdyGurdy19 · 22/04/2023 20:47

Cheese on Christmas cake. I mean, really?? I was "introduced" to this when first spending Christmas with the in-laws, who lived in Yorkshire. Mother in Law asked if I wanted a piece of Christmas cake, and I was floored when it came with a slice of Cheshire (husband says it HAS to be Cheshire) cheese.
Just - no!

My mother, a genuine Cockney, loved jellied eels. I don't know how she could bear to put those in her mouth. I feel squeamish just typing out the words
Another, just - no!

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 22/04/2023 20:59

@Giggorata

How do you know all ‘fake’ meat tastes weird, unless you have tried them all? And if you have, in fact, eaten them, why criticise others for so doing?

It’s not compulsory - we all have a choice, but these products provide protein which is not always easy to obtain on a vegetarian diet, if you struggle to digest pulses, especially soya beans which are high in protein and contain all the essential amino acids.

Personally, I much prefer to eat something tasty and nutritious (especially a soya based product), than part of a dead animal.

I agree. I always eat the whole thing - much easier than trying to peel it or scoop out the flesh.

FusionChefGeoff · 22/04/2023 21:05

Lasagne and salad.

WTF who in their right mind thinks sloppy mince on lettuce is a good combination??!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 22/04/2023 21:11

Aubergines. Manky, spongy, tasteless, manky, evil purple death veg.

StoatofDisarray · 22/04/2023 21:14

Cold runny egg yolks. I'm fine when they're hot, but as a runny centre in cold fancy scotch eggs and Niçoise salads, etc? Ugh!

Titsywoo · 22/04/2023 21:15

Haveallthesongsbeenwritten · 22/04/2023 18:33

Agree! Or lasagna and chips? Dont get it.
also people who ordered chips as well as rice at indian or chinese. Why why why

Yes! Chips and rice and chow mein. What a weird combination and way too heavy surely.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 22/04/2023 21:21

Risotto, horrible beige flavourless sloppy mess.

SwimmingBadger · 22/04/2023 21:23

@Giggorata I've been vegetarian for almost 20 years- not because i don't like meat, just don't like the thought of something having to be killed for me
It's like free range bananas - same taste etc but you pay a premium to know they are more ethically sourced and (in theory) no one has had to be harmed/ exploited for you to have that food

Hope that helps
