After the death of Paul o Grady it occurred to me I've never heard anyone say a bad word about him before or after death- ditto George Michael
Other celebs I can think of are David Attenborough and Peter Kay
Are there any others?

Not a celebrity, but one woman I truly admire who should be known more is shirtmaker Emma Willis. As well as running a successful business making bespoke shirts, she set up the charity, Style for Soldiers, making shirts and partnering with other firms to dress soldiers (men & women) that had been critically injured (amputees) in service to help them restore their confidence and dignity. Such a lovely, humane thing to do.

I met her once at an art exhibition that she had organised and she was lovely and unassuming. She also organises special days out and dinners for them.

I've heard that some of them return with mental health issues like PTSD, can't adjust to civilian life and often fall through the cracks in society, ending up homeless. Such a horrible thought when they've put their life on the line for their country.

Martin Clunes seems like a lovely man in rl.Before Covid he used to hold a country fair for charity on his land in Dorset. I went one year and he was judging the dog shows ( dog with waggiest tail, dog that looked the most like its owner etc ), and he was so lovely to the participants, chatting with all of them.😁

I can't speak for MC, but this reminded me I know Neil Morrisey in real life and can confirm he's a lovely, lovely man. Very charming and no airs and graces about him at all. We know him from a local pub where he's just another customer.

Lassie

No you can't say that on MN. Lassie was actually a male, yes Lassie was trans.

That is lovely, it reminds me of stories about the airmen who returned from WWII badly burned and disfigured. When they were well enough to go out some models and other attractive women would accompany them to give them confidence. Those sort of gestures must make such a difference.

TheaBrandt · 23/04/2023 10:33

Wasn’t Matt Damon an absolute bastard to Minnie Driver dumped her on live tv or something?

daisychain01 · 23/04/2023 10:46

That's a horribly inappropriate thing to say if that's true. I have no words.

Why? A man is facially disfigured fight for his country, he has lengthy and painful treatment and he has lost all confidence and doesn't want to go out and an attractive woman takes his arm and they go to a dance or for a drink to boost his confidence so he starts to go out again. What is wrong with that?

No wonder Lassie always did the head tilt confused look

"Oh what's that Lassie , Timmy's down a well? Whereabouts ? Oh on the Henderson farm - why that's deserted now . Lets go and find Timmy . You lead us there , good girl Lassie"

Good Girl ? Eh? Why I have a fine set of balls under this fur . If you cannot see them you've no fecking hope of finding Timmy on the Hendersons 4000 acres farm

Would that be the late Queen Mother whose politics were somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan?
(Or so hinted the author AN Wilson who had lunched with her at Buck House/Clarence House. And don't forget the QM's brother in law was a Nazi sympathiser. We definitely dodged a bullet when he abdicated.)

How do Edward VIII's politics reflect on the Queen Mother? He didn't want to be King but wanted the lifestyle he'd had as Prince of Wales and was being used by the Nazis who flattered his ego.

Why is helping someone regain their confidence 'horribly inappropriate'???!!!

At the far extreme, according to her daughter, Maria Riva, Marlene Dietrich, who actually went on the front line during WWII, used to sleep with the soldiers (the young, handsome ones) as she felt that before losing their lives on the battlefield they should have the opportunity to sleep with a beautiful, Hollywood movie star! I do think it probably had more to do with it being a narcissistic, ego trip than genuine altruism.

It's entirely due to the late Queen Mother that the ghastly Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson were never rehabilitated back into UK life.

I honestly have no idea what The Queen Mother's political views are- did she make them public? The one thing I did hear was a reliable anecdote related to a member of staff at Holyrood Palace and showed that many years ago she had no issues with homosexuality at a time when I think many of the public might have.

He does a lot of work to do with dyslexia.

One UK school he visits has a 'no phone policy', staff and students hand their phones over at the door, he hands his over just like everyone else.

I knew about his work with dyslexia (he's dyslexic himself) and his Hank Zipzer books. So lovely to hear that he just gets treated like everyone else when visiting schools.
He is one celeb that I would love to meet

Lassie

Female impersonator.

The Danny La Rue of the canine world., but without the personal charm.

AND he left Timmy down the well on more than one occasion while he seduced lady dogs with Bonios and Kennomeat in his luxuriously appointed trailer on set.

And there was more than one of him so you didn't even know if it was the genuine female impersonator or the female impersonator impersonator. Amazing it didn't cause more of an issue to be honest, the public were really conned. Makes you wonder if Champion the Wonder Horse was really a donkey.

That makes going out for a meal with a wounded airman seem quite trivial really.

I did see her on stage once, she didn't sleep with anyone though. It was quite an amazing show as she was well in her 60s and looked very glamorous. I can't remember how long the show was but it was a one woman show so the whole evening was on her. I was told by someone who worked backstage that she always bought the lighting and sound techs a lovely present as soon as she arrived. She said those two people could make or break your career. Shrewd woman.

It was me who feels it was a horribly inappropriate thing to say. I couldn't articulate why at the time so I left the thread.

i didn't like the use of the words "models" and "attractive" - the whole concept is crass, insensitive and shallow - it trivialises the idea that those who return from war damaged and possibly mutilated, with PTSD, might need a model or attractive person to rehabilitate them. Really? I also don't like the idea that it commoditise women. I also don't like that it would take someone's physical appearance to make the difference. Not someone's intelligence, compassion, their humanity.

As I say I have no words, but then I have significant experience as a Caseworker volunteer to have worked at close quarters with people who have sustained lifelong injuries from conflict including PTSD, drug and alcohol abuse as coping mechanisms and the last thing that will help them get better is an attractive model.

Well I was the one who said it and I said it because I saw it in a programme about what happened to these men. So you might think it was an inappropriate thing to happen, and others might not agree, but I can't see why it was inappropriate to say it unless you want to censor history.

So if you had a real heartwarming bonding moment with Lassie#1/Lassie#2/Lassie#47 and rescued Timmy From The Well and some kittens for good measure , and maybe you wanted to decompress and have some 1:1 time with yer 'ole pal , but accidently got Lassie#13 , he/she/they would look at you all fisheyed and say " I literally have NO Idea what you're talking about and if you don't lay off sobbing snottily into my pelt I'm going to call Security, Now unhand me "
