After the death of Paul o Grady it occurred to me I've never heard anyone say a bad word about him before or after death- ditto George Michael
Other celebs I can think of are David Attenborough and Peter Kay
Are there any others?

Olivia Newton-John.

Cristiano Ronaldo seems a rare type in the world of football. He is incredibly generous, given loads of money to charity and won't get tattoos as he is a regular blood donor.

Ah no, woah , he has surrogate children which is a huge no in MN

FTR , I personally do not have any issues with surrogacy , I have never been in the situation myself but I would not see someone as bad because this is the route they pursue .

Cue posts about "Handmaids Tale" / expoloitation.

I was puzzled at the friendship too

Wasn't it the Scouse bond that they had, lots of that unique humour and they probably had common ground with family and friends living in / growing up in the same parts of Liverpool.

I'm all in favour of footballers who don't go round with their arms, legs and necks tattooed like they're in the Hell's Angels. That said, I'm undecided as to whether CR7 is a genuinely decent dedicated pro who's just misunderstood, or the sort of preening narcissistic wankhammer who insists on the taking the final penalty in World Cup shootouts so he gets all the glory only to see his teammates miss which means he doesn't even get to take his kick and we all piss ourselves laughing.

Olivia Newton John - never let success go to her head, stayed friends with people she knew before fame, always grateful and humble, never the big I am, raised millions for charity, animal lover and environmentalist, what’s not to like?

There were stores that he was accused of rape and paid the accuser thousands

She supports chimps n chimps are evil monkey eating horrors. Plus she makes the chimps work in a diamond mine for her gain, was on the telly so must be true lol

She also trafficked chimps to the UK so they could do TV ads for PG Tips. The chimps had to pay for their costumes and they only earned two bananas a day, below minimum wage which was three bananas and a half a grapefruit. Not only that, but the bananas were always green and couldn't be eaten for about a week.

The other charge on her rap sheet is that she gave them degrading, embarrassing names like Poopsie, Snortbum and Ian.

Fraaahnces · 22/04/2023 18:27

Someone mentioned Louis Theroux upstream… I have a bit of a weird crush on him.

Appalonia · 22/04/2023 18:39

Martin Clunes seems like a lovely man in rl.Before Covid he used to hold a country fair for charity on his land in Dorset. I went one year and he was judging the dog shows ( dog with waggiest tail, dog that looked the most like its owner etc ), and he was so lovely to the participants, chatting with all of them.😁

Honourable mention for Barry Humphries.

He undoubtedly pissed off a few people, but they were people worth pissing off. Gets my vote.

The most charming man apparently. I missed an opportunity to meet him due to being on holiday. Am still incredibly annoyed about this.

AutumnCrow · 22/04/2023 18:53

Graham Linehan says that Barry Humphreys sent him a lovely, supportive email a few years ago. I'm glad about that.

AutumnCrow · 22/04/2023 18:54

HUMPHRIES ffs

Sorry, Barry.

I'd forgotten that, so many scandals, so little memory space. Snortbum wrote a tell book but Jane Goodall told the media, Snortbum was an alchololic, to ignore it and them paid off the media with diamonds and teabags

FFS - the man is a sexual predator. Raped an American woman in a bathroom very early in his career. He even admitted it after the event when he drew up a contract with lawyers to buy her silence.

Okay, I'm sorry. I've only ever read and heard good things. You can educate people without taking the irked tone.

ScarboroughFare · 22/04/2023 20:06

@GADDay

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Nope. Courageous anti-apartheid activist but a raging antisemite. He became a standard fixture at conferences around the world organised by people intent on destroying Israel (the world’s only Jewish state).

Hard no from me (and many others imagine)

I've never seen a bad word printed about the lovely and always-gracious Victor Garber.”

Love Victor Garber, likewise David Hyde Pierce (Niles in Frasier). Went to a recording of Frasier, most of the cast were lovely and friendly, apart from Kelsey Grammer who was conceited and bad tempered

He also smashed a mobile phone out of the hand of a young autistic boy!
Not a nice person!

What about Sarah Lancashire?

SammyScrounge · 22/04/2023 21:52

Kenny Dalglish. A real sportsman. A genuine person. Attended all those funerals after the Hillsborough Disaster.

Rather surprised someone up thread said Princess Diana. There's been an awful lot of negative things said about her - sleeping with loads of men, being manipulative etc. Definitely not universally loved either.

I think the terms "universally loved" and "national treasure" are bandied around far too much these days. Someone can be adored by many people, but there's usually some people who really don't "get" that person e.g. I'm sure Alan Carr is lovely, but he just isn't to my taste, same with John Bishop, not a great fan of David Jason though I think he's done some very good work etc.

Whereas Dames like Judi Dench and Diana Rigg have earned they "national treasure" status in my eyes, people like the Beckhams and Jamie Oliver (who I've seen referred to as such) certainly aren't on my list.

A vote here for never hearing anything bad about Sandi Toksvig, or (QI has got me thinking) Alan Davies

Sandi Toksvig? I knew someone who worked with her who says that she has a horrible superiority complex and is terribly smug. I don't think the Bake Off crew missed her!

Henry Winkler (aka The Fonz) always seems like a great guy and never heard a bad word about him.

He does a lot of work to do with dyslexia.

One UK school he visits has a 'no phone policy', staff and students hand their phones over at the door, he hands his over just like everyone else.
