Universally loved celebrities

After the death of Paul o Grady it occurred to me I've never heard anyone say a bad word about him before or after death- ditto George Michael
Other celebs I can think of are David Attenborough and Peter Kay
Are there any others?

Seen lots of mentions of Keanu and have to agree. Not seen a bad word about him. Seems to be a man of the people and very humble.

Izzy24 · 22/04/2023 10:59

I’m poorly sick in bed which is why I have RTWT.

It’s SO frustrating not having a clue what the frequently repeated dislikes of Peter Kay, Tom Hanks etc are all about 😂😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/04/2023 10:59

I always remember an interview with Kylie Minogue, where they were talking about her being 'Rear of the Year' or something. She said that all her photos were airbrushed and tiddled with, and said 'even I don't look like Kylie Minogue'.

Made me feel so much better about my own appearance.

Denzel Washington who apparently said to Will Smith:

“At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you.” 🌹

Tidsleytiddy · 22/04/2023 11:04

Declan Donnelly

Concur with this.

Many years ago my sister's petrol gauge was faulty and she ran out of petrol on single lane, back road. Ally McCoist stopped whilst others beeped and drove past, drove her to the nearest petrol station, filled the can in his boot, paid for it, bought sweets for her DS (age 5 sitting in awe in his school uniform), drove her back, sorted the petrol and said 'No bother'. DNEPHEW from that moment on stated he was a Rangers fan- in a family of Celtic supporters that's a big statement for a 5 year old 😂- and remains a season ticket holder now aged 21!

Utter gentleman. Everyone loves him.

That is a lovely story. I haven't a clue who he is, don't follow football, but I will look out for him.

Alan Rickman
Victoria Wood
Brian May
David Attenborough
Billy Connolly

talkingdeadscot · 22/04/2023 11:06

Not seen Matt Damon mentioned. Never heard anything bad about him unless anyone else knows differently.

Tidsleytiddy · 22/04/2023 11:07

David Bowie

Rylan and Ally McCoist

Ally McCoist 🤣 🤦‍♀️

Florenz · 22/04/2023 11:10

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were accused of touching some woman up on MTV years ago. They apologised and it was brushed over.

loislovesstewie · 22/04/2023 11:15

Not read the whole thread, but what about Lee Mack?

The Queen

Eh, nope

Angelou79 · 22/04/2023 11:16

David Attenborough was extremely rude to my Dad when he worked for BT. I can’t watch a single programme with him in it. I also thought he was quite patronising to the Queen in that documentary & she shot him down.

tailinthejam · 22/04/2023 11:16

I was coming on to say David Attenborough, Michael Palin and Joanna Lumley, but they have already been mentioned early in the thread.

Struggling to think of anyone else... maybe the late HMQ Mother.

Ruth Jones

I'll never forgive her for those fucking awful Tesco adverts.

Ditto John Cleese and Sainsbury's.

I bear marketing-related grudges of considerable longevity.

Denzel Washington does seem a nice person. During the pandemic I remember a piece about him stopping when a mentally ill man was causing some sort of scene and the police were called. Black man in America causing problems in a pandemic, what could go wrong? Denzel got out of his car and talked the man down. I thought that was impressive.

He has given lots of money, millions, to various charities.

I quite like him in a film as well and I even remember St Elsewhere in the 80s when daytime TV was more limited.

Gymrabbit · 22/04/2023 11:23

I find it weird how so many people can be completely oblivious to well known things.

Alan Davies is famous for being rude, aggressive and unlikeable. Not just on mumsnet but generally.

Miriam Margolys is marmite. Some think she is great, others (like myself) see her as a foul mouthed vulgar scumbag who wished death on someone whose politics she didn’t like…

and some of the names are so obscure that you just can’t claim they are universally loved.

on a personal level I find it very hard to like those who have put themselves firmly on the TRA side of the trans debate in the name of ‘be kind’. Some of these seem like nice people e.g George Takei but the fact that they think women have no right to say no to men in their spaces puts me off.

justasoul · 22/04/2023 11:25

Pelé is far from universally loved. A football genius - yes. But he faced a massive amount of backlash for refusing to acknowledge a daughter he had from an affair, even after DNA tests proved she was his daughter. He ignored her her whole life.

Yes Dolly Parton is a queen and I don't particularly like country music but i love her!!

I would imagine everyone has off days though. Especially if you rely on other people to get things done for you and for some reason things go wrong. I would probably be an awful sleb cos I do have off days. So thank your lucky stars I am not!

Thought I didn't like country, before I discovered bluegrass! Well worth a listen.

No one will be universally loved, because everyone's human and we all have off-days. However, I've never heard a bad word said about Dolly Parton or Keanu Reeves.

Likewise: Doris Day, Julie Andrews, Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith: all of them grace personified. (Rigg is proof that you can have an acerbic wit and still be warmth and kindness itself).

Patrick Swayze seemed very well-loved despite his documented addiction troubles. He seemed something of a George Michael type: kind, quiet and philanthropic without fanfare.

I've never seen a bad word printed about the lovely and always-gracious Victor Garber.

Peter Kay - don't know of him personally but have read a fairly negative press. He doesn't double me over with laughter personally - there's only so much humorous mileage in being a working-class northerner - but the Derek Acorah psychic skit 'Clinton Baptiste' was admittedly hilarious.

Have a read about his affair with Patsy Kensit while you’re at it.

He’s a knob.

Well there you go, can't have a nice thought for very long.

So universally loved apart from by the many people who don't like him, then?

Exceptions that prove the rule. 😉

Would that be the late Queen Mother whose politics were somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan?
(Or so hinted the author AN Wilson who had lunched with her at Buck House/Clarence House. And don't forget the QM's brother in law was a Nazi sympathiser. We definitely dodged a bullet when he abdicated.)
