Behaviour that annoys you at the airport

Have taken refuge in a bar now but what behaviour annoys you at the airport?

My top 2:

People who walk passed the multiple signs at Heathrow telling them about the rules on liquids (written and pictorially) and express outrage when said liquids get confiscated or they spend ages already at the conveyor belt digging out all of their little bottles.

On the otherside of security the people who, instead of moving their tray to the little cubicles designed for the purpose, they stand at the exit to the baggage scanner putting on shoes, belts, watches etc causing a backlog through the people scanner.

@DoraSpenlow no, it's the seat in front. Those at the front (and near the emergency exits) have to put theirs in the overhead locker.

OK, thanks for that.

Flying for the first time in years this week. Will save me from annoying other passeners who know what they are doing.

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2023 21:21

Years ago it wasn't as bad as you had staff around to do your cases and look at your passport and put the tags on and actually help you. Since it's become ' you do it all and only have one person on for any queries' it's all turned to poo
Bit like every other thing in the pursuit of saving money for companies who don't give a dam about anyone

I fly long haul frequently and I’m aware I’m an intolerant traveller in many ways where others are concerned. I am super organised and have it all down to a fine art and I agree with so many of these things already mentioned. Trunkies need to be banned, as do those hellish scooter things with the suitcase on the front. Parents who let their precious offspring run riot in airports generally and in the interim play Moana or Encanto or whatever at top volume without headphones also frustrate me. Airports are not the place for children to be running loose and I’ve said on here before I’d happily pay a premium for child free flights.

Special mention to people who stand immediately on landing, people who wait until the gate to announce their claustrophobia or whatever means they need a different seat, and people who can’t organise themselves at security either side. I usually fly BA Club World and the mess that some people leave in the suites is also astounding. Fairly sure they don’t live like that so why they think it’s ok for someone else to clean up after them is beyond me.

LeChatChat · 16/04/2023 21:36

Staff at security at Gatwick who make you wait for ages to put your second tray of bits on the conveyor, while the first sails merrily off to the other side of the scanner for anyone to rifle through. Grr.

Manchester Airport … it’s my version of hell.

coronafiona · 16/04/2023 21:51

Ryanair. Everything about them I hate including their depreciation of planes which is longer than everyone else's to save money. Doesn't seem safe to me. I will not fly with them

No sure what do you mean by that?

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2023 21:58

I do loath the race for those Gray trays and all that faff. The tension of it all.
Airports are just earth's version of hell.

LeChatChat · 16/04/2023 21:59

LunaTheCat Manchester airport is one of the seven circles of hell, I'm sure.

fairypoppet · 16/04/2023 22:04

Like everyone has said the ones at the security queue who are shocked they have to take their metal and liquids out even though they’ve passed 47 signs telling them to en route to front of queue.

People having a pint for breakfast - I mean, really?! No it isn’t the start to the holiday….it’s lame

People with folders and folders of unnecessary paperwork.

People who let their kids sit on their suitcases on the luggage trolley

Kids running riot - I know some children are unable to stand still for long
periods due to many conditions or able to cope with the airport conditions/experience etc and I feel for them and their parents but I don’t think that applies to all children. Teach them to behave in a public place. Same goes for in restaurants but that’s a whole other thread…

Plane ones:
Those who recline their seat without warning 2 mins into takeoff on a day flight. Now don’t get me wrong I appreciate it’s their seat but we were in premium economy last week in BA and the guy in front literally shot his bag with gusto and knocked my hubby’s drink everywhere. Just be a bit courteous and check, takes 2 mins. I only mentioned PE as it never seems to shoot back like that in economy - we had a free upgrade lol.

People eating SOOOOOOOO much. Why do people feel the need to eat from the minute they get on the plane to the minute they get off? Boredom I understand but I can’t get over the volume…. Don’t get me started on the huge sectioned boxes of sweets with kids names printed on them on the Florida flight then kids puking a few hours later.

People with the huge cabin cases moaning when they have no room to put them and I’ve got a small rucsac up there and they start taking it out and trying to move it elsewhere to fit theirs in.

MangosteenSoda · 16/04/2023 22:07

Manchester Airport is indeed the worst. And just gets even poorer year on year; it’s sort of astounding.

The transport drop off/pick up is astonishingly bad. I think the worst I’ve ever encountered and I have been through so many airports around the world.

notimagain · 16/04/2023 22:11

Depends..

It might be odd to see pints being drunk at the likes of Luton at 6 A.M. but at places like Heathrow at that time of day there are lots of connecting passengers who have arrived from the Far east/Aus on Long Haul flights, sat around waiting for onwards connections to Europe/elsewhere in the UK, or even going through westwards.

Their body clocks and digestive systems are who knows where and some people are possibly sitting down to their tea or evening meal.....

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2023 22:17

Spoons at Gatwick departures is enough to make you want to lose the Will to live let alone having a pint at 5am
The Boots only had self service tills open last time I was there.
My gate is always about four miles away. I've never flown out any nearer gates ever! I doubt they exist.
Whole experience is always tension filled crap
Luckily I'm not a frequent flyer. Although I'm already panicking about an upcoming trip in the summer..

Florencenotflo · 16/04/2023 22:28

I've only read 3 or 4 I'll go back and read the rest in a minute.

But what really annoys me at airports... my husband. All year round he's amazing, generous, patient. Put him within 20 miles of Gatwick. Massive twat!

He becomes so uptight, the slightest inconvenience and he gets so stressed and at times angry. Honestly it's embarrassing. Not towards other people I might add, but just in general, internally angry. By the time we actually get to our destination he needs an extra 3 days!

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 16/04/2023 22:33

Why is it the family from hell at the airport somehow find their way onto the same flight as you?

Several years ago we were flying long haul with our two DCs and this family of 5 - 2 adults, 3 DCs appeared. Their children spent most of the time screaming around the restaurant, the shopping area ( this was Gatwick and we STILL couldn’t seem to avoid crossing paths with them!) and the departure lounge. Parents seemed oblivious to the impact their offspring were having on others.

I couldn’t believe it when we boarded the aircraft as they were right across the aisle from us in the middle five seats and the thought of 10 hours in their company was making me very twitchy. Once airborne, they proceeded to unpack more snacks and items they had purchased at the airport and throw packaging and food debris on the floor all around their seats and were up and down constantly for the first couple of hours, standing on their seats and looking over at the unfortunate passengers sitting behind them. It was a relief when they eventually fell asleep.

They clearly irritated the cabin crew too with the mess; about an hour before landing when the crew start winding things up, one of the staff appeared with a black bin bag, handed it to the father and announced quite directly, “You’ll be needing this to pick up all your rubbish”
Didn’t blame them at all. Why should the crew be expected to deal with it.

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2023 22:35

Coming back last year from abroad my dh started stressing out that the departures wouldn't have any where to buy any food. He was actually having a mini meltdown about it until we discovered ' the food court' area selling over priced baguettes. It was very unlike him tbh, but airports seem to have an effect on people like no other place on earth it seems.

Makewayforsummer · 16/04/2023 13:03

People who are disorganised at security and then proceed to find their phone, kindle, ipad, liquid ect. Make sure your organised before you get to the front of the queue.

There's blissfully unaware/ignorant sods who do this but it isn't always practical to get these things out and ready in a moving queue. It's hard to carry a cabin bag, handluggage, maybe a coat plus a laptop, phone etc ....add a child and its even harder. Not everyone has 1 rucksack and handy pockets.

FrizzledFrazzle · 16/04/2023 22:48

The last time I went through airport security there was a woman who had maybe 50+ tiny little bottles of make up, perfume etc spread across multiple bags. The rule was everything had to fit in one clear plastic bag (not the backpack, washbag and suitcase she was using).

Obviously they didn't all fit. She must have spent 15 minutes holding up the line fussing about which ones to keep and which to discard.

I was raging.

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2023 22:56

Airports should give out free ' stress balls' for people to use. Or maybe some herbal tablets for anxiety!

ShakeYourFeathers · 16/04/2023 23:00

Have been to 4 airports in the last 2 weeks and these things have annoyed me

People who aren't used to carrying a backpack so are unaware that they're back extends further than normal and then you have to dodge them as they are all head height

Airports with flat escalator type walkways and people who just stand in the middle so you can't walk past. Not just stand to one side. Feel unlike escalators there not that common so common etiquette hasn't been written yet

Tannoys which you can't hear the announcements unless you are in a specific place in the loos. Also too many announcements so you sort of zone them out

tiredvommachineasaurus · 16/04/2023 23:03

@PurBal I was at Birmingham last week and they had the free plastic bags for your bits 😊

Hillcrest2022 · 16/04/2023 23:09

literally everything annoys me about behaviour in airports LOL... I think my tolerance levels just plummet as soon as I enter. That said, my biggest annoyance is people standing in a line SO CLOSE behind you. When my hair was longer I used to flick it in their face as a way of saying Get Back !!!

Runnerduck34 · 16/04/2023 23:10

Crowded airport lounges where people put their bags on a seat or lay down taking up 3 seats, whilst others have to sit on the floor.

Runnerduck34 · 16/04/2023 23:26

Oh and the automatic passport control gates that often don't work, family of 6 ,4 dc all now over 12 so we are directed to use them but at least 1or 2 of us will fail to get through meaning they are separated from rest of family as they then have to join a different queue - teens who have passports that are 3-4 years old seem in particular to be vulnerable of their photo not being recognised by technology. I just want our passports checked as a family group by a human being!

Getabloominmoveon · 16/04/2023 14:14

I fly almost every week for work and so am super-organised with my luggage etc. I find the easiest way of dealing with other passengers is to completely ignore them, so have blinkers on, let the airport staff and stewards sort out the problems, and just look after myself.

This! Absolutely this. I follow the rules and blank out other people's behaviour. Not my problem. You do you and let them do them. I have one wheelie case, all within the allowed size. I don't travel with checked in luggage. I have a handbag and a coat as well which both go neatly under my seat infront. These days I like to get on my flight pretty much straight away making sure I get space in the over head near me, and I can sit down and read my book. Back in the day I was one of the last on board, now I prefer to get on with it and get on. Once in a blue moon we have check in luggage and it really bugs me to have another queue to get through dropping it off, and then having to wait to pick it up after the flight.
