Considering the numerous Scots I know, I can say most would find it hilarious after a few drinks.

Possibly not for everyday wear however.

I don't know many or any Scots who would find it hilarious. They wouldn't he offended - its just not funny. It's had it'sday. Mildly amusing at the time. Now tacky & more likely to get an eye roll

ditalini · 12/04/2023 15:05

I would think you were a dick. I associate it with Russ Abbott, the 1980s and people thinking they're being "wacky" (including Scottish football fans).

I wouldn't be offended but I also wouldn't find it funny. It's a crass, stupid, boring stereotype.

Hisenginesniceandclean · 12/04/2023 15:10

Also sold in many tourist shops in Scotland, the owners of the shops have no issue selling it so I’m assuming they don’t find it racist.

It would prob depend on what occasion you wld be wearing it.

CarrieMoonbeams · 12/04/2023 15:16

I'm Scottish and wouldn't find it offensive, just a bit 'old hat' 😉

skyfalldown · 12/04/2023 15:25

I'm Scottish. It's not racist but very twatty and attention-seeking. I'd assume you were trying to get a rise out of me and my family.

feellikeanalien · 12/04/2023 15:29

I'm Scottish and I'd just think you were a bit of a twat.

smizing · 12/04/2023 15:31

This post comes up every pother week on MN. It was dreadlocks hat a few weeks ago🙄

Yes it seems a uniquely mumsnet issue.

Potentially racist headwear

Same here. I’m Scottish and don’t know anyone who’d find this ‘hilarious’ or even funny. I don’t think it’s racist though. I’d just think ‘what a profoundly idiotic person’ and distance myself.

Kanaloa · 12/04/2023 15:35

I’d also sort of group you together with people who feel the need to screech ‘wait a wee minute’ or some other dull phrase when they find out I’m Scottish. The type of person who finds anyone different ‘hilarious’ and ‘impossible to understand’ because they’ve generally lived quite a small/confined life and think their little corner of Lancashire or wherever is the ‘standard’ for the whole world. You know, the type who can’t really understand that, yes, they have an accent too! Everyone does!

RunningFromInsanity · 12/04/2023 14:50

We wore them at a recent hen do where the groom is Scottish.
2 members of the party were also Scottish and didn’t find them offensive.

Is that the only theme you could think of? Oh the groom is Scottish so let's wear silly hats. So weird.

Agree.

You'd be seen as an idiot and folk would just distance themselves. Depending upon what your behaviour was when wearing it, would decide if you were in danger of a mouthful of expletives.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/04/2023 15:39

I'm from Yorkshire and if someone wore fancy dress of a flat cap with a Yorkshire pudding on top and carried a soft toy whippet it wouldn't bother me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/04/2023 15:39

maddy68 · 12/04/2023 14:14

For goodness sake. People are just looking to be offended

Wear what you like. No Scot would be offended by that

Good job you're here to speak for all Scottish people.

My mum for one, would think wearing that made you a right twat.

It's not as bad as actual racist costumes like Geisha or caricature Caribbean. But it's ignorant and tired.

Puffalicious · 12/04/2023 15:39

Do you think that we Scots are to be laughed at? Thinking on it further, I might be offended depending on the situation/ your behaviour. Just desist, please.

If I were from Yorkshire I wouldn't like that at all.

AgnesX · 12/04/2023 15:43

Not racist but depending on where and why probably consider you just another eejit.

Redebs · 12/04/2023 15:44

Racism is about power imbalance. Scottishness doesn't generally put people at a disadvantage in the way that skin colour or Caribbean/Asian heritage can do.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/04/2023 15:44

Just a shit-plopper @IVFNewbie or are you coming back?

kitsuneghost · 12/04/2023 15:45

Depends what the person is trying to achieve by wearing it.
What reason would someone have?

Before someone says just for a laugh. Laugh at who?

WillowtreeHouse · 12/04/2023 15:48

I'm Scottish and don't find it in any way offensive. I don't find it hilarious either, just a bit meh as it's a dated old stereotype. I couldn't muster up enough horror to be offended though.

MercyChant66 · 12/04/2023 15:51

Ah, the old See You, Jimmy hat... been around for decades. As a Scot, I wouldn't be in the slightest bit offended - it's just very, very boring. But I love the product description - 'stylish, practical.... and the ideal choice for travelling' 😂
