No more so that disneys 'Brave'. Such a cliched main character with her ginger hair, slightly plain and somewhat tubby. I can't bear to watch it.

LizzieVereker · 12/04/2023 18:35

Not racist, just pathetic.

We had this same thread recently but with a rastafarian hat, yet everyone said that it was racist - why is that racist, but this isn't??????

Because racism is about power imbalance. Black people (a group which includes most Rastafarian people) are part of an oppressed minority. Red haired white Scottish people are not.

As a Scot and a red head they always make me cringe. I got bullied pretty badly as a kid for my hair tho so anything poking fun at red hair will make me feel this way

museumum · 12/04/2023 18:45

Not racist or offensive normally but certainly could be used in a bullying situation.

As a Scot who has lived and worked in England with people who thought it was HILARIOUS to regularly point out that I am Scottish I can tell you, it is definitely not funny and I’d be mortified if a group of people wore them in order to laugh at me and my heritage.

That probably says more about you than the hat - I'm also from Yorkshire, and I'd find it amusing.

Maybe you just need to lighten up a bit?

Maybe I'm just tired of the working class being poked fun at. I also have the prerogative to feel how I feel. 🤷

I don't know many or any Scots who would find it hilarious. They wouldn't he offended - its just not funny. It's had it'sday. Mildly amusing at the time. Now tacky & more likely to get an eye roll

I did say "after a few drinks".

Not at all to the same extent. Scottish people are not exactly high on the list of oppressed peoples.

Christ learn some history! It's not a competition but Scots have definitely been discriminated against.
Yes op, I would consider it racist.

@DidyouNO What are you on about? Brave is beautiful and tubby?! wtf

This thread is bringing out all sorts.

Because racism is about power imbalance. Black people (a group which includes most Rastafarian people) are part of an oppressed minority. Red haired white Scottish people are not.

Both of these threads were posted to see what people would say and then pretend that racism is only against Black people.
It's a common (racist) trope.

Racism is about power imbalance and inequality, absolutely.

sadsack78 · 13/04/2023 12:03

As a Scottish person, I can say you are not racist if you wear that hat.

It is so far removed from what Scotland is actually like-especially now- that is isn't mocking anything real about Scottish identity.

Completely different, for example, to wearing traditional Muslim clothing or something, where oppressed and marginalised people DO actually wear those clothes now every day and are discriminated against for it.

tigger1001 · 13/04/2023 12:08

I wouldn't find it racist, but depending on context, I would think you were a twat.
