What business is it of his even if he does have Irish ancestors. He should keep his nose out. it's really beginning to annoy me now. And he's not even there yet.

Keep his nose out of what?

GrazingSheep · 11/04/2023 18:19

Lol

Chickenkeev · 11/04/2023 18:19

For shame! It's gas, we're complete lick arses but at least it's a bit of good news like.

I'm in Ireland and I didn't know he was coming until yesterday.
He has pretty close relatives here so why not.

Are you in Ireland?

Brahumbug · 11/04/2023 18:21

His connection to Ireland is thin to say the least, he has far more English ancestors than Irish, but that doesn't have the same cudos with the Irish American voters.

Chickenkeev · 11/04/2023 18:22

He does have a few Irish ancestors tbf. But visit is more to do with GFA 25th anniversary afaik.

I don't know how you escaped the coverage! It's been wall to wall morning to evening in the last few days! Granted, I have no life so spend a lot of time listening to RTE!

Deadringer · 11/04/2023 18:35

I forgot he was coming, but if it encourages more Americans to come and spend money here in the future, I am all for it.

Absolutely! £££££

motherofkevinnotperry · 11/04/2023 18:37

I'm not sure he'll make it to the end. He's looking more unwell and frail the more I see him.

Forever42 · 11/04/2023 18:37

Isn't he coming to Northern Ireland to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday agreement (which the US government was heavily involved in?). I guess he thought it would be an opportune time to go to the Republic too. Lots of Irish Americans make a big thing if their Irish ancestry (however distant...). I think he visited a few years ago too.

Yes to all this!

I doubt they'll tax him too much, he does look quite frail now. And can't even have a pint to perk up!

He'll probably survive the next few days.

Jonei · 11/04/2023 19:03

He has English ancestors too. But he likes to hide that part of himself.

alexdgr8 · 11/04/2023 19:07

i think it's fine he's going to Ireland.
but wish he had accepted to come to the coronation too.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 11/04/2023 19:07

It is great for Ireland and is helping to keep the Good Friday Agreement on track. What is wrong with wanting to visit where your grandparents came from. Ireland needs someone to watch their back seeing how northern ireland the dup are going against everything and all they say is a big NO. There will be a United Ireland soon anyway and we always welcome Presidents to our country. Great for trade and relations with our close relations with U.S.

United Ireland in the near future is extremely optimistic. ROI is not exactly swimming in money so not sure we could afford to 'take on' the North. And that's without even considering whether that would be amenable to the majority of residents of the island.

Viviennemary · 11/04/2023 19:14

It's a wonder he doesnt visit Scotland to sort out the SNP probems. He could buy the campervan and use it to tour round.

Ultimately this is for the Irish American votes. There isn't really an English American lobby over there so not worth their time. It's a marketing strategy. Means to an end. And I don't think an English visit would have half as much of an impact as an Irish one.

Chickenkeev · 11/04/2023 19:22

I just got a ping from Sky News on the phone - 'why do ao many US Presidents like to say I'm Irish' 😅

Pashy · 11/04/2023 19:22

So weird that a man from a country you’re not from is visiting another country you’re not from, and you’re angry about it.
