What business is it of his even if he does have Irish ancestors. He should keep his nose out. it's really beginning to annoy me now. And he's not even there yet.

A pet hate of mine is referring to a 'potato' famine. An awful lot of our food was exported to Britain. The famine as it was was not neccessary. Irish people were viewed as sub human.

The name that came down to me from my Irish ancestors is the Great Hunger.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 12/04/2023 01:10

It's also ridiculous to suggest that President Biden not attending the coronation is some sort of snub to British people or to King Charles. American presidents do not attend coronations. Even President Eisenhower, who was close to the Royal Family, did not attend the coronation of the late Queen. He, like Biden, sent a representative.

Chickenkeev · 12/04/2023 01:44

The poor f*cker looked absolutely shattered getting off the plane. Don't envy him that job!

Plus the President's security detail and all the arrangements required are hugely disruptive, so I'm sure it's a relief to not have to plan around that.

I agree. He can get lost, who gives a toss honestly. With his big jet and sunshades, what a load of guff.

Lol, if he were offering a trade deal with the UK there would be a far different attitude to Biden...

The sniffing at Biden here is equal parts ridiculous and pathetic.

So true. I remember people on Mumsnet complaining that President Biden got an exemption from having to ride the bus to the late Queens funeral.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 12/04/2023 04:01

what about the boring coronation that will be on the telly for days on end looking at charles and the fake queen camilla. Will just change channels as I suggest you do if it bothers you so much. Ireland went through so much and there was not a famine, food was taken from Ireland to england to feed the people there while millions had to emigrate to U.S hence the big connections with U.S and Ireland.

Not forgetting the ones who never made it, who died on the coffin ships and have no graves.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 12/04/2023 14:18

To IWASAFOOL I know this history not taught in uk schools which they should know about. People had wakes before they went on the ships and the disease and death awful. Shocking how the poor were treated just left to die on the roads or in the awful workhouses.

Maybe Northern Ireland should become the 51st US State.

That's ignorant even for you.

Pseudonamed · 12/04/2023 19:16

Been a while since there was a 'goading of the Irish thread'.

Nice to keep the old traditions alive.

The bit that I'm sick of hearing is the phrase 'Joe Biden's visit to the island of Ireland'. Since when has it been referred to as 'the island of Ireland'? What's wrong "Joe Biden's visit to Ireland'?

You'll have to ask Arlene

Some people get confused about the distinction between Ireland (the country) and Ireland (the island).
So when something is inclusive of both the Republic and NI, the phrase “the island of Ireland” is often used.
For example, if you are eligible for Irish citizenship, one of the conditions is being born in the Republic or NI. And in this case, Biden’s visit was to both.

It’s and odd thing to be “sick of hearing”, but of course you could turn the radio or TV off for the duration of the visit in case it catches you unawares.

It has been referred to that way for ages to reflect the geopolitical situation of the whole island.

I cannot see your annoyance since ye know, it is an Island and both ends can refer to living in Ireland. Bit more of a mouthful to say 'Bidens visit to Ireland and the 6 counties the Brits stole' I would have imagined.

Pseudonamed · 13/04/2023 08:36

He does look like he is having a great time. I saw a video someone put up of the entire convoy of cars and it was fairly impressive - im not much into environmental issues so not losing my knickers over the nitty grittys on it all.

borntobequiet · 13/04/2023 08:42

Great expression!
