What business is it of his even if he does have Irish ancestors. He should keep his nose out. it's really beginning to annoy me now. And he's not even there yet.

At the end of the day, it probably is about votes. But i reckon his affection for Ireland is genuine. And i think we're allowed to enjoy the visit, there's been fuck all else to get excited about in the last few years. Any excuse for a party!

I don't think Irish people need to apologise or minimise this for the comfort of those it makes inexplicably angry in any way whatsoever.

You forgot about the PIRA blowing up the school bus she was on aged 12, IIRC. Survived that one too.

Jesus, i remember that now you say it. Unfathomable.

Not apologising by any means! But i'd say it does no harm with the votes. They mentioned on RTE earlier that he was in Warsaw not too long ago, huge Polish population in US too. All these things are at least a little bit politically motivated but it can be both. And I'm enjoying it anyway!

Can you see him actually run again in 2024?

I'd be amazed if he does and if the US electorate would actually elect him. He'd break the age thing once again. Biden should really step aside for someone younger - perhaps Kamala Harris?

I don't think it's about votes for Sniffer Joe, tbh. At any rate, the Irish-American bloc is declining year on year, decade on decade. This trend is a long term one and won't be reversed.

German-Americans are the single biggest Diaspora group in the United States now, IIRC. Believe its over 40 million.

Irish-Americans total around 30 million.

English-Americans totals 24 million.

Polish-Americans alone or in combination totals short of 9 million.

Scottish-Americans are around 5 million.

Did they bring him to a Holiday Inn?

Thank you @DownNative
I had never heard those words of John Hume.
They are truly inspirational.
To me John Hume and Seamus Mallon and their families will always be heroes.

borntobequiet · 14/04/2023 17:19

James was Scottish with mixed ancestry like anyone alive today.

So not very Scottish at all. His father (Darnley) was English.

I just find it annoying when they say “ The island of Ireland”!

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2023 17:24

I don't see what is so annoying about it.

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2023 17:36

Why?

You're welcome! Hume said a lot more than that which was why Provisional Sinn Féin and Provisional IRA considered murdering him too. They ultimately decided against it as it would have brought too much heat on them.

They did attack his house while he was away. I'm sure he'd be furious to see Provisional Sinn Féin has overtaken his SDLP.

It was also Hume who argued that Nationalists and Republicans had to accept the constitutional status of Northern Ireland as well as the legitimacy of Unionism in wanting to remain part of the UK. In fact, from 1964 onwards Hume destroyed the prevailing Nationalist and Republican narrative.

Huh?

That makes no sense since most, if not all Scots in 2023 have mixed ancestry from Great Britain AND the island of Ireland! Some have Polish and Asian ancestry too.

Doesn't make any of them less Scottish and it certainly didn't make King James less Scottish either. 🤦‍♂️

Shall we lobby to call the Island which both ends of Ireland are on something else to please you?

I just find it annoying when they say “ The island of Ireland”!

Conversely, I like it as a way of expressing that something applies to both sides of the border without labouring the point.

borntobequiet · 14/04/2023 18:10

Uh-uh....and attempting to misrepresent me too!

You don't seem to have noted the irony of your own post in a thread about Joseph Biden either. An American who says "I'm Irish!" to a BBC journalist who tried to ask a question.....🤷‍♂️

Indeed, it's a term that shouldn't offend anyone on either side of the border. Silly for anyone to feel annoyed about the phrase "island of Ireland" too.

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2023 18:54

You can't beat a bit of RTÉ News chatting to politicians while Thin Lizzy are blaring out behind them.

Why? I would have said it was a neutral way of encompassing both political entities.

Chickenkeev · 14/04/2023 19:47

The bleedin Coronas now. Urgh!
