I want to live by the sea

Member869894 · 10/04/2023 17:49

Any suggestions please.? Id like somewhere with beautiful views and country walks.
Not too remote. I can work remotely so dont have to worry about a commute. Ideally I'd like a 3-4 bed house. I can spend 350-400 k

@Powderandpaint you didn't mention 'scousers' as a selling point, because every point in your post is negative. Don't try and back track.

EachFallenRobin · 12/04/2023 11:43

I moved to the coast a couple of years back. From my home I have a 'sea glimpse' rather than a sea view and it's a ten minute walk through woodland to the beach, though only about 300m as the crow flies. Every day I love where I live, I love the summer crowds along the prom, the winter bluster and isolation, but best of all is falling asleep listening to the sound of the sea. You also get lots of friends and family wanting to visit, which suits me but might not suit everyone!

I live on an island 45 mins drive from the Lake District. I can't imagine not living by the sea.
The island where Thomas the Tank lives is allegedly based on where I am 🙂

Folkestone? Recently voted one of the Sunday Times top places to live in the UK, and sandwiched between the sea and the North Downs.

As someone who lives nearby, I can't help wondering if this recent press push for Folkestone as an amazing place to live is because a local billionaire is currently turning most of the pebble beach into ten luxury apartment buildings (most of which will inevitably end up as air b'n'b's), with the big harbour car park turned into residential parking and more housing squeezed in wherever it will fit.

It's still a pleasant town (as long as you avoid the Black Bull area and a few other spots) and OP could probably afford somewhere in Sandgate. I found this https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/128463536#/?channel=RES_BUY

You could have a point, although I have lived in several places around the UK and it's certainly my favourite so far.

Yes the billionaire is building on the harbour beach which he owns, but not the rest of the council owned beaches, which is from the coastal park down towards sandgate, as well as sunny sands and the warren. I personally like the improvements he has made to the harbour area, but there are plenty of other places to go if you don't.

Aberystwyth with sea views - university town so good facilities

Borth - fewer facilities but on the beach almost, and what a beach!

Oooh.. please tell us where!

CurlewKate · 12/04/2023 21:21

@Callywhoknows Is there still a brilliant campsite at Folkestone Warren?

MarkWithaC · 13/04/2023 08:37

Funnily enough there's a Times piece today on 'the cheapest and the most expensive places to live by the sea'.
It's paywalled and I don't have a subscription or a token, but thought I'd flag it for those who do..

We relocated to north Devon 13 years ago. We live in a town about 2 miles from the coast as it was better for schools and social stuff for the kids. Can walk to the sea in about 45 minutes or obviously drive faster.

Absolutely love it. Can't imagine ever moving back to the midlands 😊

Can I ask where please, looking at a relocation ourselves!

Will you share where you are? xx

OliveTheaBough · 29/06/2024 16:22

This might not have woodland walks, but you get a sea view and a brand new home

Have you considered Northern Ireland

@CuriousMama Nice to see Saltburn mentioned. I was born there and lived in Brotton. I now live in West Sussex (still by the sea!) but would move back to Saltburn in a heartbeat!

MaryMack · 29/06/2024 18:09

I live in North Wales in a house overlooking the sea. My neighbours are all Welsh. Liverpudlians are more than welcome in our village, never met people so accommodating and welcoming as the scousers.

HouseofHolbein · 29/06/2024 21:39

@Changeofhorizon we are in Bideford 😁 nice and handy for Westward Ho! and Instow

Changeofhorizon · 29/06/2024 22:25

That sounds lovely @HouseofHolbein xx
We are being evicted from our home in London by a very selfish landlord who wants to bump up the price to crazy amounts... alongside this my son who has special needs has been out of school for ages as theres not suitable schools here and actually all the schools that most suit him are along the dorset /devon way.. Im feeling tempted to move to Lyme Regis as theres a school in Chard that would be really good for him. And then even further Exeter and further still NEwton abbot area more amazing schools, then some inland towards somerset.. I was brought up in a coastal town in Wales so have always felt at home near the sea but I also have an adventurous spirt and want to make sure theres still plenty to do / people to meet etc.. community.. music.. art....
sound like anywhere you know? (:

HouseofHolbein · 29/06/2024 22:36

I love Lyme Regis tbh. Plenty of places within easy reach of Exeter personally I like exmouth and sidmouth is also lovely.

I love where I live but it can be a bit isolated so you might be better closer to a city 😊

Whatever you consider, visit the place in January or February before committing to anything.

This. And remember a sea view, particularly west or south facing, can come with brutal winter gales.

There are some spectacular places around the coast but there will always be a trade between cost and desirability.
