I want to live by the sea

Any suggestions please.? Id like somewhere with beautiful views and country walks.
Not too remote. I can work remotely so dont have to worry about a commute. Ideally I'd like a 3-4 bed house. I can spend 350-400 k

I live in south wales, 35 mins outside of Cardiff. Good transport links (trains to Cardiff and beyond, 15 mins from m4 motorway), lots of lovely beaches close by, not far from the Brecons...magical

Glasgow in on the Clyde which is tidal, How do you think they launched ships from there

I've heard it all now. OP says she wants to live by the sea and you suggest Glasgow because the Clyde is tidal? That hardly makes it "by the sea". 25 miles to a beach isn't "by the sea".

Filey, Yorkshire coast. You'd get a 3/4 bed house for that, though not a sea view. Fabulous beach, miles of it.

You’d have to live in Filey though, it’s one massive nursing home

Fizzadora · 10/04/2023 22:01

Was going to suggest The Wirral but you would be lucky to get a beach hut for that budget there.

winelove · 10/04/2023 22:01

I quite like Hunstanton!

FurAndFeathers · 10/04/2023 22:07

Powderandpaint · 10/04/2023 19:08

Just a few words of advice.

The East Coast can cold (very) and the winds from the North Sea can be biting.😟

Hunstanton is a dump.

The West Coat is warmer and wetter.🙂

Glasgow has rain nearly every day.

North Wales is full of Scousers

The South Coast has a better climate but you get a whole load of retired folks. Not a problem in itself unless you require NHS services.

So what is the problem with Scousers @Powderandpaint ?

I see you’ve reported me for pointing out your casual bigotry and that Glasgow isn’t exactly by the sea (about 25 miles away actually) 🙄

Glasgow is not only not on the coast, but it also doesn’t have rain almost every day. It has an average of 167 rain days per year, so less than half.

I’ve just done that!
Sold my house that was central England and bought a stunning 4 storey Victorian 5 bed terrace house with sea views for £150k in Cumbria!
2 mins walk to the beach, lovely local community and a train service direct to Carlisle which then takes you either up or down the country and easy access out into the M6.
And the Lake District on the doorstep too - as much hiking as anyone could dream of! 😍

where are you Newusernameaug?

Most beaches are about 25 miles from Glasgow such as Lunderston Bay.

So not quite by the sea then is it?

do you class every town with a tidal river as “by the sea” 😂😂

That’s not how “by the sea” works.

Most beaches are about 25 miles from Glasgow? That makes no sense 😂 most beaches where? Because no. There are a few, but there are exponentially more beaches NOT within 25 miles of Glasgow.

Look at this stunning beach and coastline though! Miles of golden sands! Rugged cliff side walks! And bridges sending you straight to the other coast, a mere three minute walk to cross the entire sea.

We moved from England to northeast Scotland a few years ago , now we live by the sea mountains and Forrests and we love it here . That amount would buy a huge home up here

vera99 · 10/04/2023 22:13

They do dey they don't dey.....

It's true.

It's not ill-mannered.

Many people from Merseyside retire there.

Lwrenagain · 10/04/2023 22:46

Tbf DP and I are scousers, now living on the Wirral, but we do plan to retire to North Wales.

maddy68 · 10/04/2023 22:50

The gower coast is stunning as is Northumberland. Now whether I would want to live somewhere so remote is another matter

Mammyloveswine · 11/04/2023 00:15

Come to the north east! North Shields fish quay has had a lot of regeneration and is honestly one of my favourite beaches! You could get a prime property with your budget!

But theres Whitley bay, tynemouth, cullercoats, Blyth (to live next to the actual sea, not further in town), but also the whole of the Northumberland coast!

So you sound perfectly happy in a very cheap house? Why are you wanting to move?

Curious mama I was asking Newuser where she lived

I want to retire to Tywyn..love it there. One if my favourite pastimes is to browse for properties online.
The only thing that makes me hesitate is the limited health care, having just had major surgery at the outstanding Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/04/2023 15:41

I grew up by the sea and love it, I may retun some day. I would caution a few things:

  • Seaside towns can be pretty deprived so do your research thoroughly
  • They can be pretty bleak off season.
  • Bad weather can be really bad - high winds and rain can freally scream in from the coast.
  • Be wary of anything with too close a sea view - especially in the East coast, you don't want to end up in the sea in 20 years time.
  • Salt water is corrosive so be prepared for a bit more home maintenance than other places.

Good luck.

JerseyRoyals · 11/04/2023 15:47

One of m y colleagues moved to the Isle of Wight just before lockdown. She loves it and as we all work remotely she just zooms in. But London is 90 mins or so from Southampton or Portsmouth so it is easy to get to wherever if she needs.
