DS only wants 200 pound trainers

I'm at an impasse with my son. He's 13. I've never been into label's, stupid priced clothes or sports. My son has always cared about what he wore but recently he's in a group of friends that needs Nike trainers. His last pair were fila but now apparently that's not good enough. He's had his hair cut into a trendy cut at his insistence and I'm not against him finding his style but 200 is too much for trainers when his feet are still growing, he'll play football in them and wreck them and it's more than we spend on food in 2 weeks.
I've tried showing him shoes in the sale, looking at other makes and saying he needs to use some of his Christmas money to a maximum of 100 pounds. I'm really unreasonable.
Any ideas? Any websites I can use? I did get a puma tracksuit bottom and a Nike t shirt from costco do at least he has clothes on!
I'm not giving in on over 100 for trainers, the most expensive shows I've ever had were 40 and they were biker boots that still fit me :-)

Yup. As an aside. Fuck Nike.

I would never buy sports wear labels for my kids. It's ridiculous and I don't like kids wearing tracksuits outside of PE

Thank you for your valuable contribution.

skyeisthelimit · 08/04/2023 16:55

He needs to learn the word NO and also learn the value of money. Give him your top budget and ask him to find something that he likes for that price before you bother taking him shopping again.

I'll spend a normal amount for trainers and if he wants anything more fancy he'd have to pay himself or have for Christmas/birthdays.

I wouldn't no way be paying £200 for one pair for a 13yo.

I find it weird when parents control their children like this. They are their own person, not an extension of you.

But that is all he is hearing and how can you learn rhe value of money if you are not allowed to learn?

I'm assuming that your kids are young and happy with trainers from the supermarket or places like Clark's . If they are over 11 then very unusual not to own a pair of sports brand trainers.

Like Trump. He's the same with his Barron.

Barron is like 16 and not allowed to wear trainers like Adidas and Nike?

Northernsouloldies · 08/04/2023 18:51

Be a nope, u ain't earning n I ain't paying. 200for boys trainers your kid needs a reality check. 😁

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/04/2023 18:54

Nike are crap anyway. Mine were 115 and after four months the inside is crumbling. Not sure if that's helpful

Cantthinkofabettername · 08/04/2023 18:57

£200 is way too much for everyday trainers. My eldest likes expensive trainers so I used to give him what I’d spend on them to him and if he wanted a more expensive pair he had a paper round and had to use that money.

How awful for them. Poor children. Unless they are pre school children then they should have a say in what clothes they like. Imagine someone controlling what you wear!

HauntedPencil · 08/04/2023 18:59

I would never force a teenager not to wear sports clothing and honestly sounds a touch snobby. My parents didn't have a clue and I always said I'd allow mine to have things they picked - but within a budget.

I'd happily pay x towards and let them make it up via Christmas or birthday money and I think that's a decent compromise that will allow them to learn the value of money and that maybe they don't actually want to spend all their money on one thing etc.

Campingislovelybutnotintherain · 08/04/2023 19:00

Way too much money in the opinion of the OP. I know that because she said so.

But why can't the kid use Christmas money to make up the difference? Why is it acceptable to dictate what the kids money is spent on?
What is acceptable to spend the money on?

OfTheNight · 08/04/2023 19:32

My DS is in adult size 7 trainers (same as me, which is handy!). We buy almost all his sports and labelled stuff from Vinted. He’s got Air Force 1, Jordan’s and Air Max 98’s didn’t pay over £40 for any of them.

Kids grow so quickly, there’s always stuff on there. We got a new Nike Air tracksuit, that was £90 in Sports Direct for £12 yesterday. We’ve also had lots of football gear from there too.

mauveiscurious · 08/04/2023 20:32

Saying no is part of parenting, adults rarely get what they want

I would buy more from Vinted if I wasn't so nervous about being scammed with a fake. Any tips?

TaylorsSwimShorts · 08/04/2023 21:31

Don't buy him second hand.. they will be creased 😱 he will care about this! I feel your pain, my boy is almost 14, size 9.5 and loves Nike, his are usually £150-£170, he has them for birthday/Christmas presents and for parties/celebrations/ holidays, he absolutely wrecks them, plays football in them, his latest pair are shredded, unwearable, so until his next pair he has to wear his vans which are around £80/90, and not his preference, but.. consequences! I'd say to use his £100 and you put the rest if it's doable, trainers really matter to some kids, the kids in my sons school would make his life a misery for M&S trainers ( I also don't like them )Confused

TooOldToCareAboutOthersOpinions · 08/04/2023 21:33

Nope. As ds in mens i go up to 130. If he wants more he uses his pocket money /Saturday job money to pay the difference

IhavethisthingwhereIgetolderbutjustneverwiser · 08/04/2023 22:12

Honestly - dose no one worry about their teenagers being mugged for their designer gear? It's epidemic where we live - literally can't own anything nice

When I see teens in expensive coats the thought does cross my mind. Then I think nah I bet it's a fake.

AlexReventa · 14/08/2023 01:47

Try EBay or Vinted. My son is into labels (peer pressure) and second hand are accepted by the peers. You could pick up a real bargain. And you can sell them on if in reasonable condition. Good luck!
