He was only 46 and itโ€™s just weeks after the group had announced they were doing a reunion tour ๐Ÿ˜ž

RIP Paul.

Another one from the pop era of the 90/00s gone too soon. It seems there is one every year, people who are my age and that I grew up with.

in the last few years weโ€™ve lost Sarah Harding, Tom Parker and Darius. Too many too young.

AnythingToSay · 07/04/2023 23:37

So sad to hear this. S Club 7 was my favourite childhood band.

I always knew Paul was a bit of a troubled soul but when I saw them live at their previous reunion tour, he brought out an acoustic guitar and performed - by himself - the loveliest stripped-back version of Reach. In all my gig-going days, it was such a special, beautiful moment that I've never forgotten it.

RIP, Paul.

Rest In Peace, Paul Cattermole. Great songs.

My absolute crush back in the day. Such a sad loss at a young age. RIP ๐Ÿ’”

Sad news. I wonder if his mother is still alive? Quite a few of my mother's friends in their 70s and 80s have lost adult children lately-not as young as Paul but in their 50s/60s-all natural causes. Very sad and tragic.

Itโ€™s always nice when a pop star demonstrates an unexpected musicianship.

Many years ago I saw Robbie Williams solo at the Kentish Town Forum. It was designed as a pay per view gig on telly so you couldnโ€™t really buy a ticket, it was all music industry people and competition winners. My boyfriend at the time was a guitar tech for the support band and I went along kinda sneering at the thought of a pop star gig.

It was great! Robbie absolutely blew me away - no more sneering from me. One of the best live acts Iโ€™ve seen in 30plus years of gigs.

Off to look to see if Paulโ€™s solo version of Reach is online anywhereโ€ฆ

So unbelievably sad. RIP Paul.

Agree with others that he was my favourite member, he had such a kind face.

The online trolls commenting on his appearance should be hanging their heads in shame right now. It reminds me of Caroline Flack all over again.

@EmotionalSupportHyena if you do find it please would you link here?

I agree @EmotionalSupportHyena! He looked great!

I'm so sad to hear about his death. Thinking of his family and friends

Agree, I also thought he looked great.

Yes, he looked different, but it's been 20 years, of course he looks different.

I was never an S Club fan, just not my type of music, but he seemed like a nice chap.

There is something very wrong though that he, and others in the band, were so skint, after selling so many albums and having such success. Complete exploitation by the music industry and I hope this prompts something to change although I doubt it.

I found this but itโ€™s hard to hear due to the crowd noise.

Itโ€™s lovely isnโ€™t it?

Itโ€™s possible that a version of it recorded through the sound desk exists somewhere, if so, Iโ€™m sure lots of people, both long time fans of the band and people like me, who have a mild fondness for the songs as soundtrack to an era, would love to hear it.

Feels like a bit of an empty platitude to say thoughts are with Paulโ€™s friends and family but as a fellow St Albans kid, I do really mean it (I know there is another St A Mumsnetter upthread too!) ๐Ÿ’

LlynTegid · 08/04/2023 14:17

@wellhi agree about the nature of contracts for such groups, something common in the 60s which should long ago have been consigned to history. Perhaps time for a change in the law, a 'Paul's Law' if that is a fair phrase to use.

AnythingToSay · 08/04/2023 15:19

These are lovely @EmotionalSupportHyena . Here's the one I went to:

Not the best quality visually but I think it really shows the magic of being there, with the crowd singing along, phone lights on, and Paul serenading. Just magic.

R.I.P. I don't remember a time with such a high occurrence of premature death. It is a great mystery.

Aquarius1234 · 08/04/2023 18:27

Simon Fuller the manager always have me bad vibes. Remember when spice girls did gigs few years back. Posh spice didn't want to to involved but still got millions anyway and so would he.

Yeah that's not said in good faith. RIP would have been sufficient.

Comefromaway · 08/04/2023 21:24

Iโ€™ve just seen that his family are asking for donations for the National Youth Music Theatre in lieu of flowers as Paul was a member (along with Hannah Spearitt)

My son is a current member and it has been life-changing for him. There is a long running mumsnet NYMT thread.

What a lovely gesture.

Complete weirdo, policing language. I was sad to hear of his untimely death and stand by my observations. Goodbye.

Life is short - so sad fir him and his family, friends and fans
we must live for every moment xxx

Yoyo2021 · 10/04/2023 09:17

The amount of vile comments that were online thousands under videos and pictures made me feel so sick! I couldnโ€™t understand it he looked great for his age the others had so much work done and apart from one or two of them looked like they had never grown up and quite rough.

will never understand why he had all those comments when Jo - who is a open racist after what we saw on camera to shilpa shetty in big brother received far less!
