Have you been to a place no one else has been to?

I'll start. The idea is you name the place and a fellow MNer has to say if they've been there. However, you don't have to wait until you've been somewhere to post. Post your places and you'll meet the MNers who've been there. You can post 1-3 places (random numbers).

I've been to:

Rwanda
The Whisundays
Cathedral Grove (Vancouver Island)

@marcopront I did regular teacher training / train the trainer sessions on Zanzibar, often went for weekend breaks (lived in Dar) and got married there.
If you're there now there used to be a great cafe in Stone Town that was owned by the same people that had the Stone Town B&B (can't remember the name of it now)....they did fabulous coconut toast.

I live in Moshi so we've been to Zanzibar a few times.
We're not planning on going to Stonetown this time as it is Ramadan.
However since Precision want us to fly from Dar to Kilimanjaro before we fly from Zanzibar to Dar who knows what will happen.

Unusual but still tourist places I have been:

Petra and the Wadi Rum in Jordan - simply amazing!

Varosha - the (until recently!) sealed off part of Famagusta in Northern Cyprus - fans of Victoria Hislop’s ‘the sunrise’ will recognise it.

Masada in Israel. Interesting but the hottest I’ve ever been in my life!

I've been to Petra - wonderful.

@PolkaDotMankini I'm surprised I didn't see Las Vegas on more lists! I've been about 20x - but it's an easy trip from here.

@maranella Have you really also been to these same places as I have??? I am a bit suspect (or, I misread?) with the use of the slashes that were the same as my post...or have you been following me? 🤓🙃

Mt St Helens, Oregon coast, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, LA/Hollywood/Burbank, Maui, Miami, Chicago, Montana, Idaho,

I forgot to add San Francisco to my list of American cities. I'd love to hear about any random small town visits anyone has done.

I've visited relatives in Toledo, Ohio & some who moved out to the smaller town of Waterville, Ohio.

JuvenileEmu · 06/04/2023 18:05

Nazca, Peru. I'm probably not the only person who has been, but it stood out for me on my trip to South America as being very odd feeling- it was an 16 hour journey on a bus through endless flat, dusty and featureless landscapes. Strange place.

My other two: Rajah Ampat in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Although a bit of a cheat because I had to travel via PNG to get to Rajah Ampat. Complete opposites- Rajah Ampat was the classic tropical islands, white sand beaches and amazing coral. And PNG was just... fucking scary. The least safe feeling place I've ever been. The rates of violent crime, murder and rape were sky high, among the highest in the world at the time- including war zones. I've just had a look at the fco website and it looks like things haven't improved much.

Not been to any previously mentioned but I’ve been to:

Great Keppel Island
Oman
Brunei

Lived in Oman from age 3 to 8 . Brilliant place

cptartapp · 06/04/2023 18:23

Lochgoilhead in Scotland.

HuntingoftheSnark · 06/04/2023 18:29

@cheapskatemum @SiobhanSharpe my godparents lived for many years in High Easter and I used to go to stay with them. I've never met anyone who's even heard of it, let alone been there. Lovely memories.

Not Roswell but Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
John Steinbeck's House, Salinas
Base of the Grand Canyon, by mule!

I've been to Trurh or Consequences too. I love that they changed the name. We got snowed in at (tiny) Roswell International Airport for 10 hours, which made it rather more memorable. We were clearly repelled by aliens...

Pleased to see that others have been to Hakodate. I thought it was stunningly beautiful, especially with so much architecture inspired by the sea trading routes.

Of the ones already mentioned I've been to: Karlstad, Halifax (NS), Hobbiton, Swaziland, Mongolia, Kamloops, Saskatoon, Moscow, Peterhof, St Petersburg, Formentera, Krasnoyarsk, Katoomba, Lewis, Harris.

Not yet claimed by anyone (I think):

  • Vorovoro, Fiji
  • Ulan Ude, Buryatia, Russia
  • Donghae, South Korea

I've been through Ulan Ude on the train, though we weren't stopped there for long! I suppose it counts, if seeing somewhere from a boat does...

LaViajera · 06/04/2023 18:56

@JuvenileEmu I've been to Nasca; travelled overland from Lima but had a stop or two on the way IIRC. Such a weird place. I still struggle to compute it's as old as they say and it wouldn't have been visible from above to those who created it.

Rajah Ampat sounds amazing.

Anonymouslyposting · 06/04/2023 19:04

@JuvenileEmu I’ve been to Nazca - I found the tiny planes absolutely terrifying!

emmetgirl · 06/04/2023 19:08

I bet others have too but anyway....

Knoxville, Tennessee
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Alaska

Soopermum1 · 06/04/2023 19:09

Ujiie, Japan

LarkDescending · 06/04/2023 19:20

@cheapskatemum in Nanyuki - being bang on the Equator - did you do the thing of watching the water go straight down the plughole rather than swirling in one direction or the other? I ended up in the Cottage Hospital there for a while, after a riding accident. The water thing seemed strangely fascinating!

@JimmyDurham did you stay at the wonderful Fleischers Hotel in Voss? We skiied in Voss a few times in my childhood. I’d love to visit it in the summer.

Cherrysoup · 06/04/2023 19:42

Death Valley.

Some seriously out of the way tiny towns in America during multiple road trips using an old fashioned map. Apalachicola-we were by far the youngest there!

Went for a nice ‘float’ in middle of nowhere Tennessee where the hire place gave us life jackets, pushed us off and told us to get out at the first bridge. We were picked up and in the minibus were people who genuinely looked like characters from Deliverance. They appeared fascinated by us being English.

Area 51-not gonna lie, I clocked the bloke sat on the bonnet of his pick up with a rifle over his arm and wondered what would happen if I stepped up to the danger of death by shooting sign. What happens is that the guy jumps up and aims his gun at you. Backed off in a big hurry.

Cherrysoup · 06/04/2023 19:45

We did Pacific highway no 1, depending on if you’re driving or a passenger and your direction, it’s bloody terrifying!

Trans Siberian, Trans Mongolian or Trans Manchurian?

I've done 2 out of 3 so far, and would very much like to complete the set if Russia ever settles down again.

Ulan Ude is worth a stop, should you ever find yourself out that way - a fascinating mix of Russian (including Old Order Orthodox) and Mongolian cultures, with a big Buddhist monastery/University.
