Autistic women assemble!

Nepmarthiturn · 04/04/2023 10:36

...only if and when you're not feeling antisocial and want the entire world to +%$¥ off, or course. 😉😆

A few of us were talking on another thread and thought it would be nice to have a support/ chat thread on here to share interests/ challenges/ parenting issues or whatever we feel like. A little community of autistic women on here that we can dip in and out of but will be supportive and friendly and people who actually get it.

Might also be a nice counterbalance to all of the horrific posts about autism that we find here so regularly!!

P.S. Have deliberately posted this in chat rather than in the ND Mumsnetters topic because it will hopefully reach more people who would like to join in. I didn't even realise that section existed for a long time and often miss threads there as they don't show in active and expect I'm not alone in that. However, in posting this here, we will be relying on the people with obnoxious and ignorant views about autism who so regularly post on Mumsnet, to demonstrate to us their allegedly superior empathy (ha!) and please just leave this thread alone: it's not for you. Many thanks!!

@MWNA your family also sound lovely and considerate!

I guess these big celebrations are an overwhelming time for many of us. But lovely to read lots of people's loved ones are being understanding and making it manageable.

Happy Easter everyone! 🐰🐣🐥🥚🌸🌷

I'm not ok. I was so upset yesterday by that thread. We were supposed to have plans but I'm just going to decompress myself today.

I've picked my skin til it's bleeding.

They are so horrible and they don't care how discriminatory or ableist they're being. It's just attack after attack on our disability that we are supposed to have protection due to.

Seriously reconsidering posting here at all or if I do not mentioning my autism.

IncompleteSenten · 09/04/2023 11:19

I know what you mean. I can't help but think that if it's so hard and painful being married to one of us that you need to be in a support group to cope with it - you know where the fucking door is! Leave. That's certainly what I'd advise my husband if he turned to a support group because he felt life with me was intolerable.

IncompleteSenten · 09/04/2023 11:21

Meant to say - hide the thread, not yourself.

@Furries my father made the kids breakfast so I've only just woken up! Such a shock, I woke up and panicked as I never get a lie in. 🤣 So thoughtful of him and unexpected. 💙💙 Feeling a lot more human today after some rest.

Aw, what a lovely father. And what a great lie-in! It’s always a bit odd when you wake up outside of your “normal” range.

I hope you have good weather today - it’s really nice where I am, feels like a proper spring day at last.

Furries · 09/04/2023 11:46

Nepmarthiturn · 09/04/2023 10:20

Just catching up.

@matis not again. 😔 The same ones? Reading how it's made @Furries feel, and others I'm sure, makes me so cross and upset. I don't understand why they would do this to us and no just let us be so we can help each other.

I hope everyone is ok.

I’m ok. I stewed for quite a while yesterday and last night. In the end, I put my thoughts into words. I had to, as otherwise I knew it was going to take up brain space today. FWIW, I defended the wording of your OP. I’m now going to forget that their space exists (I don’t mean that horribly!) and am going to hope that this thread continues onwards and upwards. Am still very thankful that you started it - and am pleasantly surprised by how many people have joined in.

Furries · 09/04/2023 11:57

Happy Easter all. What’s everyone up to today?

Im currently sat on the sofa on MN (obviously!).

The kitchen door is open. I can hear lots of birds merrily chatting away outside. A lawnmower is going somewhere nearby - I can be often feel irritated by unwanted sounds, but I do actually like the sound of a lawnmower, it signifies good weather!

Later, am heading over to my mum’s to cook a roast. Will probably be eating around 4pm. Is there a word for something that is a mix of lunch and dinner, like the word brunch?!

I normally cook chicken if I’m doing a roast. Today, I’m cooking beef - I think I’ve only done beef a couple of times in my life and definitely haven’t done so for at least a decade. So am about to do a quick search for tips and resting times. Will be doing the whole meal (apart from veg) in her air fryer, wish me luck!

When I get home, I’ll probably have a couple of glasses of wine and catch up on an episode or two of Succession. Am a bit late to the party, I only started watching it a week ago. Am still trying to decide if I like it or not. Though I did find myself muttering “Fuck Off” when something irritated me yesterday 🤣

Furries · 09/04/2023 11:59

Note to self - try using less exclamation marks.

@Nepmarthiturn thank you for the kind words! DH truly is a gem (luckily an introverted one, so he likes the quiet!!!).
Really appreciate you starting the thread and moving it along and all your positive contributions!

I have got up and started baking my hot cross buns for a family get together later today and will get my run in shortly- am indeed feeling much better. DH popped out for coffee and croissants from my favourite bakery to get us started this morning, so all looking much brighter!!

JarByTheDoor · 09/04/2023 12:07

At 4pm? If it's a main meal like a roast, then it's just dinner. Main mean in the middle of the day is dinner, main meal in the evening is dinner, so main meal at 4pm can be dinner. IMO. If it's a lighter meal, a few sandwiches or something, then it's afternoon tea.

Was that meant for the soup thread, by any chance?

No, it was in response to this:

Nepmarthiturn · 09/04/2023 14:07

@matis I am so sorry how upset this has made you. I feel partly responsible since it seems to be my wording of my OP that have caused such an unpleasant reaction there. That said, they obviously shouldn't have been linking to our thread or commenting about it in the first place. Just been over there, the link to our thread has now been removed by Mumsnet and I've gone against my better judgement and made a post in an attempt to explain my OP and also how this has affected people here in the hope they will be reasonable and leave us alone. I hope it doesn't make things worse. I never know if I am saying the wrong thing.

But I really, really hope you won't feel you can't post here now. That would be awful. Please check in later if you can to let us know how you are (obviously only if you want to!). 💐

Me too, despite the teething issues with this! Hope things will settle down now. Perhaps I should have anticipated this but hey ho.

I am delighted how many of us there are here now.

Also thank you for your very measured intervention to try to smooth things over.

Awwww many DH points for that man!

Hot cross buns sound delicious.

We've had an easter egg hunt in the garden, played some board games, and just about to eat a roast goose!

At @Furries I think this should henceforth be known as dunch. 😁

Enjoy your roast! Hope it all goes to plan.

Also need air fryer tips please! I bought one then haven't managed to read the instructions yet so it is sitting in the kitchen unused. 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Dobbyatemysocks I can completely relate to the reading and speed reading- I see words as discrete units rather than individual letters as blocks, but it's so hard to explain to others; I know I read much much faster than other people but I don't understand how it takes others so long!

hello everyone,

I can relate to a lot of things mentioned in this thread, but the mentions of ways to read stuck out especially.
I remember words almost as pictures; I never really learned the grammar and spelling rules in my mother tongue (not English); I kind of just absorbed them, not the least from a lot of reading 24/7, and I knew a word was spelled correctly when it looked right. Thus, I didn't like it much when spellings of words were officially altered, because they keep looking wrong and "off" all the time.
It is a bit different with a foreign language, as I compartementalized it and could understand & learn its grammar separately.

Regarding the speed reading: as a PP I suppose I read quite fast, but I don't overdo it as then the meaning and information won't sink in, and I would have read a whole chapter but promptly forgotten the information after 5 minutes.

Furries · 09/04/2023 18:35

Dinner / dunch / linner was lovely. From start to serving up was 45 minutes (and that included 10 minutes for resting the meat).

I love my air fryer. Love that I can cook on two different functions, with different temperatures and times, then just hit the synch button and they both finish cooking at the same time.

Ooh, roast goose - hope it was good. I’ve never tried goose.

Photo of roast included. Not taken for this thread specifically - my BIL and I have a weird thing of sharing photos of our roast dinners 🤣

Oh, and my tulips, which I snapped quickly as I was on my way out.

@Nepmarthiturn

I liked reading about your thoughts as "concepts". There is a gigantic gap between my ideas and suggestions and the ability to express them in the same way. Sometimes I wish I could just transfer my thoughts to other people without having to speak or write them down.

LuluTaylor · 09/04/2023 18:39

Joining. I've been lurking on Mumsnet and TBH I was thinking of deregistering because I don't like most of it. Too much bitchiness and trolling. The thought of a quiet supportive thread is like a breath of fresh air. Thanks for starting it OP.

Air fryers are awful.

😆 why @TheShellBeach?

Because they make horrible chips IMO.
I mean real chips, not frozen ones.
I tried four times to make chips, and couldn't, so I cleaned the air fryer very carefully, sent it back to Amazon, and got my money back.
