Slim 15 year old having trouble buying clothes. Which shops? Jeans shopping was a disaster.

So... We used to buy very easily from h and m, zara and mango etc.

Recently all her 164 size stuff is far too short in the leg. So we went to h and m and stuff was really long in the leg.

Jean's from several shops didn't fit her and she ended up crying. I've brought stuff on line but now I Csnt buy an age range I am struggling.

Thanks..
I'm truly astonished.

In my younger days I was a good size 10.
Once I got down to an 8 and she looks much more like an 8!

When I'm a 12 I'm far far chunkier!

She's a slip of a girl and if she lost any weight at all I'd been really worried 😧

The measurements you’ve told us indicate that your Dd is a size 10-12, but probably a size 12 if size 10 jeans are too tight. Also if 164cm length jeans are too long for her then she’s probably over 5’5”, so she is not short. Try size 12 or size 12 tall. She’s not ‘extremely slim,’ but she sounds like she’s in the healthy weight range. I can’t wear teen clothing because the waist and hip measurements are too wide for me, but I am a little underweight (genetics).

LaffTaff · 03/04/2023 08:50

My 13yo is tall for her age, and slim. She wears jeggings, as jeans tend to be short in the body on her. I've found New Look to be brilliant for jeggings, I buy her an adult size 6.

justmindinmybiz · 03/04/2023 09:05

If it helps, I'm 5'1' and waist 26" and I'm a size 8 in trousers/jeans. Or in topshop/asos I wear size 26 jeans with the petite length.
After puberty the waist to hips ratio changes so perhaps that's why child sizes are not working for her. My waist is small but I have larger hips so sometimes I even buy the hourglass range from asos which fits better.

Does she have quite flared hips/pelvis? This can make you have to go up a size. Nothing to do with body weight but bone structure.

Greentree1 · 03/04/2023 09:36

My daughter is petite and very slim, at Xmas she suggested the following sizes if I was going to buy her clothes:

Fatface size 8, M&S size 10, New Look size 12, Cotton Traders Size 8.

So can vary from an 8 to a 12 for her in the different shops she tends to buy from.

olympicsrock · 03/04/2023 09:40

Sounds like she is a size 12. Poor girl she must have been distraught with you giving her clothes far too small. If she is short try shops with a petite range so 12 petite. And perhaps take a 10 to the changing room to size down if needed.

Champagneforeveryone · 03/04/2023 09:45

I'm an odd shape for jeans and have bought Levi's for as long as I can remember. The initial outlay is high but I have pairs that are in excess of 6 years old now (admittedly not my smartest ones!)

The Levi's stores are great for you to get the exact style and fit you want, then scour the sales or Vinted. I recently bought a pair of 501's in the sale at John Lewis for £27 😃

minipie · 03/04/2023 20:58

Ok so 69cm waist, 88cm hip, she is very much hourglass shape. Kids stuff will not fit.

This is my shape and tbh finding jeans is a nightmare. I would point her towards the mid to high waisted, straight or wide leg styles, they are most likely to fit. Luckily quite popular at the moment.

I do not think she is a size 12. As I say I am this shape, slightly smaller measurements and when I find jeans/trousers that fit they are size 8. So I’d say she is an 8-10 but will need to search hard to find trousers that fit well.

RoseandVioletCreams · 04/04/2023 08:43

All this has been so useful thank you.
I don't shop myself now like I used too! As said its all on line and for me it's sainsbury tu a solid size 14 with elastic waist 😧

So this is all really useful.

Sorry but a size 10 being too small on a 15yo teen girl isn’t “extremely slim” or even “very slim”. She is closer to average size. Just look at women’s size 12 long for jeans.

GreyCarpet · 04/04/2023 09:53

Ugh its a nightmare. No solutions just a bit of a I feel your pain

My daughter is 17, 5'1 and a size 4-6. She is also curvy and has a tiny waist and long legs (she gets very little of this from me! 😭) She bought some levi's last year. They're age 12 and look great everywhere but her waist where they gape at the back.

According to ASOS that's a 10 on the waist, 8 on the hips, so not an hourglass. High-waisted that fit her waist are likely to be too big on the hips so may not work.

She is the opposite of hourglass? A size 6 hips but 10/12 waist.
It sounds like children's sizes would still be better. Or as suggested go into Levis as they do jeans for all shapes.

I'm an 8 on the waist, 6 on the hips and wear a high waisted 6 as they are still a better fit than an 8, but they are tight on the waist after washing. A bigger difference in sizes and I agree children's may work better.

It's interesting that I seem to have struck a nerve fir daring to say I think my dd is extremely slim.

When I see her waist you couldn't take any fat off her. There is nothing to give. That to me is extremely slim!..

What on earth does it matter to the people who have got all upset about my classification.

It's weirdly projecting your own issues onto a stranger on a forum. What a thing to get upset about.

@RoseandVioletCreams
I don't think it's struck a nerve as much as confused posters, as you can see by the posters initially suggesting a size 4/6.

Being inaccurate means you don’t get the advice you need. Saying “extremely slim” had most of us thinking oh your child is a woman’s size 4 or 6. And so we were initially thinking of places that carry these smaller sizes. Then I read further on to see your 15yo is a woman’s size 12. This means all that advice is utterly useless because your DD isn’t extremely slim, she is average.

There is no projecting of issues going on.

Okunevo · 04/04/2023 11:21

If a 13-14 at h&m is too short then I'd try a 14+, though by the size chart it looks like that would be too big on the hips. If a 14+ is too long then stick with a 13-14 as ankle grazers or roll up the 14+. Though, there should only be a few cm between them.

RoseandVioletCreams · 04/04/2023 11:27

Silly question, but have you tried Levi's?. My boys wore them from around age 2 , and seemed to always have a good fit right up to gangly thin teens, me and oh wear them too. They have so many different fits and lengths.

Tbh, I think it caused confusion rather than anything.

I posted about my daughter who is a size 4-6 because I hadn't read all the posts at the time.

I think people read 'extremely slim' and understood 'slight' rather than low body fat. It's all relative and linked to build, body shape and height.

My daughter currently has a 22/23 inch waist. If she became a 27 inch waist, there'd be a fair old amount of fat there!

Until I hit 30, I had a 23/24 inch waist. By the time it was 27 inches, I definitely wasn't 'extremely slim'.

I'm a 12/14 now and I'm in not 'slim'. In anyone's definition. Yet other people at a 12 (like your daughter) are.

No one is projecting issues. Probably just little bit surprised that you can't dress a slim size 12 body easily.

Verite1 · 04/04/2023 12:08

I think if 69 waist and 88 hips she is more likely to be a 8-10. I have just checked h and m size guide. In fact - her hips are coming out as a 6! Are you sure she just wasn’t used to the fit? For example was she trying on super skinny jeans and didn’t like how tight they felt? Jeans will always give.

It’s the confusion. I went on this thread because I thought you were looking for jeans to fit someone who is a size 4-6 and petite (5’3” and under). I am size 4 and petite, but my suggestions won’t work for your Dd because she is bigger than me.

As it stands, your dd has a size 10 waist and is too tall for 163cm jeans which means your Dd is tall, not petite. She sounds like an average size and definitely not ‘extremely slim.’ She needs to try size 10 or size 12 jeans, maybe the tall section. She could try different styles of jeans, maybe mom jeans, straight cut, regular cut etc.

RoseandVioletCreams · 04/04/2023 15:35

@Verite1... Actually I think you have really struck on something there!

She normally wears very loose baggy trousers in soft materials.

Obviously whilst some didn't fit it wouldn't surprise me if that tight tough Jean texture has affected her!
