Slim 15 year old having trouble buying clothes. Which shops? Jeans shopping was a disaster.

So... We used to buy very easily from h and m, zara and mango etc.

Recently all her 164 size stuff is far too short in the leg. So we went to h and m and stuff was really long in the leg.

Jean's from several shops didn't fit her and she ended up crying. I've brought stuff on line but now I Csnt buy an age range I am struggling.

@bellac11.. Primark is the one place we didn't get too.

There isn't one close but if we made the effort how do they size?

Will it say 15/16 etc

Oh sorry just seen update. She maybe more curvy than you realise then.

Okunevo · 02/04/2023 20:45

If 164cm is too short then try 170cm (16years)? Or are they then too wide? In women's if a 10 is too tight you would try a 12 or 14 surely?

I find Primark run small in trousers say compared to next/new look. They do have a kids range but not sure what size they run up to. I'd be looking closer to 12/14 ladies range in Primark duectovthe smaller sizing.

RoseandVioletCreams · 02/04/2023 20:46

@RoseandVioletCreams@WishingMyLifeAway

We had been out for a while and didn't get that far.

She tried different styles from 6 up to 10.

In several shops in different trousers.

Just checked on the New Look size guide for teens and also for womens. Interestingly:

Aged 15 waist size is 28 inches
A size 12 waist size is 29 inches.

Worth a look because she could easily be a size 12 in various shops

@DeathMetalMum

That's really helpful thank you

Can you get her to just take measurements so you know what size to start from?

Rollercoastertycoon · 02/04/2023 20:48

Right, if her current jeans are 164cm kids size, they would be about a 72cm waist according to a quick Google. What's that in inches, about 28? She's probably about a size 12 then. I used to fit in a 175cm kids clothes when I was a 12/14.

If you haven't already had this discussion with her, this is when you start explaining to her that clothes sizes are inconsistent across shops and not a reflection of her self worth.

I'll be honest its been a long time since I went in a 'normal' shop for clothing, having been too big for most of them and shopped online for decades

I found it completely overwhelming, couldnt make sense of where things were,, labels all missing for sizing. They were teeny tiny. Left without buying.

I remembered why I hated shopping even when I could fit into stuff. I nearly ended up in tears too with the frustration

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/04/2023 20:51

Why didn't she try a 12? Was the 10 to big on the waist but not big enough on the hips or something like that? Or was it just that she didn't want to be a size 12 so didn't try? (no judgement, I remember crying in the changing room as a teen when I realised my usually size 10 self was going to need to try a size 16 to fit in some jeans. I left instead.)

If you can say which bit is too tight (hips/waist/thigh/legs too long/short etc) in which shops then people may be able to suggest a brand that's cut differently.

Axahooxa · 02/04/2023 20:51

Jeans are really hard to fit well. I have two teenagers- one is size 6, the other 12-14- she lives in joggers as they fit so much better and she likes how they feel and look.

RoseandVioletCreams · 02/04/2023 20:52

@bellac11

Same. I found it very stressful also.
I much prefer tk max because all the size 10 are in one place.

I hate having to trawl over the entire shop trying to track down the items in glaring spot lights and horrific heart pumping music

Definitely avoid brandy Melville. It doesn’t work for anyone with a curvier figure or bigger than size 8 (which is disgraceful on their part.)

Absolutely, this is so important. Ive hovered around a 26/28 for a long time, have lost some weight and am now in 20-24. I have chucked out a pair of trousers today which were a 22 but still cant fit into a pair of 24s that are still sitting there waiting.

I have a pair of 18/20 trousers which now fit me for work tomorrow.

Hersetta427 · 02/04/2023 21:06

When my daughter was a very tall 12 yr old (172cm) we got all get jeans and leggings from the adult section of primark. They do size 6 and sometimes you find a size 4.

GelPens1 · 02/04/2023 21:06

RoseandVioletCreams · 02/04/2023 20:27

Thanks my @Tinytigertail my dd is extremely slim but many of the jeans were far too tight and couldn't fit. We tried size 6,8 and 10!! In different shops and different styles.

Any trousers would be good really.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand how she’s ‘extremely slim’ if a size 10 is too tight. How tall is she? If she has long legs then she could try a size 12 tall?

Mumof1andacat · 02/04/2023 21:06

Bon marche jeans legs start at 25 inches. I'm on 5ft and you become very good at heming/sewing when short.

Disneyforaweek · 02/04/2023 21:10

Have you tried ordering any from ASOS?

RoseandVioletCreams · 02/04/2023 21:11

She is so slim. There isn't an ounce of spare fat on her.

She's quite short. We had no issues at all finding clothes when it was specific to the age.

What are her waist and inside leg measurements?

I’m a UK 4-6 and petite. I find Newlook and River Island jeans are usually true to size (sometimes they are too big depending on the style). My friend is a size 10 and she says that they’re accurate too. Depends on the style. I shop in the petite section because I need a shorter leg. What are the measurements of her current jeans - waist and hips? I wouldn’t tell her you’re measuring them (in case she’s self-conscious). You can then use these measurements to look up the size guide of jeans in different shops to find the adult equivalent.

RoseandVioletCreams · 02/04/2023 21:19

Where does one measure the waist

OP posts:
3WildOnes · 02/04/2023 21:21

I think you are confusing everyone by saying she is very slim. It sounds like you just need to try a size 12.
If a size 10 was too small that seems like the obvious answer. I'd there a reason why you didn't try the size 12s?
