Do you change your clothes when you get home after being on the tube or other public transport?

I never used to need to change clothes to sit on my sofa or whatever until I moved to London years ago. The tube is filthy! Now, it has become automatic habit to me to change into 'house' clothes when I get home - I don't live in London anymore but another large city where I'm on equally grotty public transport to get around. I really don't think this would have become habit if I was going from my home to my own car on a daily basis, instead of public transport.

Am I normal or a weirdo?

Well, we might both be weird...

DuesToTheDirt · 01/04/2023 21:41

No of course not. I don't want to call you a weirdo, but this is not normal behaviour!

WeWereInParis · 01/04/2023 21:42

I do, but just as a side effect of not wanting grubby toddler hands on my nicer work clothes.

I wouldn't change if I was on public transport on the weekend.

EmmaEmerald · 01/04/2023 21:43

Yes, absolutely. Mum thinks it's weird that I get changed as soon as I arrive at hers, but bleugh, two hours of public transport.

TheNestedIf · 01/04/2023 21:43

I shower and change. Public transport in London is disgusting.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 01/04/2023 21:44

I don't make a point of changing straight away but equally, I wouldn't sit on my bed in the same clothes.

Yesterday I was on public transport and only noticed once I sat down that the whole seat was absolutely covered, really thickly, in white dog hairs. Once I got off I brushed down as best I could but it was still clinging to me.

SockQueen · 01/04/2023 21:46

I don't think I've ever done this. Not died from a dirty sofa yet.

mynameiscalypso · 01/04/2023 21:46

Well no because otherwise where would you stop? I get the tube to work, should I change when I get to the office? I went to visit friends today on the tube, should I have taken a spare outfit then?

Riverlee · 01/04/2023 21:47

Nope, never changed.

TheChosenTwo · 01/04/2023 21:48

Not especially.
If I’m working I’m in the office in fair smart but comfortable clothes I might change when I get home into more relaxing clothes but I’d not be hell bent on getting the germy clothes off me. The tube is gross but I don’t lick my sofa so I’m okay with it all really.

SheikYerboutiii · 01/04/2023 21:48

Lmao no. No one died from being in clothes they wore outside.

Startoftheyear2023 · 01/04/2023 21:51

Haha! Crazy. No reason to change your clothes. Post covid I wash my hands. That's it.

Teaandcaaaaake · 01/04/2023 21:52

The tube is gross but I don’t lick my sofa so I’m okay with it all really.

I feel compelled to point out I don't lick my sofa either Grin

I don't feel it will kill me, but the filth does make me feel like I can't relax.

Washing my hands and changing clothes promotes a sense of calm and delineation from the grubby, bustling, frantic outside world and my zone of peace and privacy in my flat, I suppose?

I always change into "house" clothes as soon as I get home. Nothing to do with the Tube being filthy (and I do love the Tube and London in general). I just can't imagine being in "outside clothes" at home unless I was entertaining. I always wondered how people did it and whether they were actually comfortable...

Tellmethespoiler · 01/04/2023 21:56

No, never. And I live in London.

Smartiepants79 · 01/04/2023 21:59

Nope, never felt the need to to this.
Only ever change when it’s bed time!

SisterAgatha · 01/04/2023 22:00

Yes I do but more to take off my stiff work clothes rather than tube dirt.

Paperexcelandpens · 01/04/2023 22:01

I'm the same. I have to jump straight in the shower and put my clothes in the wash after going on the tube. Luckily I don't live in London so doesn't happen very often.

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 01/04/2023 22:01

I do change, but nothing to do with public transport - I just prefer to wear more comfortable clothes when I’m at home

Twillow · 01/04/2023 22:01

Of course not. To be honest, I wear a uniform to work and often don't take it off till bedtime as it's really comfy!

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 01/04/2023 22:02

I have to shower and change as soon as possible after a flight, though - that does make me feel grubby.

RisingSunn · 01/04/2023 22:03

Yes I’m similar - as soon as I’m in - straight into house clothes.

MoonOverBroadway · 01/04/2023 22:04

Londoner.

I never even think about it. If I change, it’s for comfort, not because I am (or feel) dirty.

Shouldbesleeping8 · 01/04/2023 22:04

Wow. Another thing that's normal on mumsnet but not in real life. No, I don't change after public transport and I don't know anyone who does. I'm still alive so it's working well for me so far

Trinity65 · 01/04/2023 22:05

No
