Do you change your clothes when you get home after being on the tube or other public transport?

I never used to need to change clothes to sit on my sofa or whatever until I moved to London years ago. The tube is filthy! Now, it has become automatic habit to me to change into 'house' clothes when I get home - I don't live in London anymore but another large city where I'm on equally grotty public transport to get around. I really don't think this would have become habit if I was going from my home to my own car on a daily basis, instead of public transport.

Am I normal or a weirdo?

Yup! Husband used to called me strange, but he does it himself now too 😁

massivenamechnage · 01/04/2023 23:25

So you travel to work on the tube
Get changed on arrival at work
Change again before popping out at lunch
Change when back in the office
Change to go back on the tube
Change when getting home
Pop out in the evening so another change
Change agin when you get home from the evening
Then change for bed.

Then when you go out again?
You go out in pjs or put your dirty tube clothes on?

I don't use public transport.

Depending on where I've been, the clothes either get hung and reworn or put on to wash.

Or maybe where I work isn't served by public transport? And if I go shopping, I use the shops in walking distance?

Do you think you're jumping the gun a bit, huh?

Theoldwoman · 01/04/2023 23:35

Definitely not.

Lulu1919 · 01/04/2023 23:36

Yes
Always change outdoor clothes for indoor clothes

TippingTree · 01/04/2023 23:42

I get the bus into work several days a week and I do usually change when I get in. Not necessarily because the bus is dirty (although sometimes it definitely is!) but because I just want to relax and it helps. Hair up, comfy clothes on, it’s like my switch over into home life.

GrumpyPanda · 01/04/2023 23:50

Have to take off the top anyway to get the bra off 😁

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 01/04/2023 23:53

Yes and I shower. I have OCD tho.

WhatFreshHeckle · 01/04/2023 23:55

No, but I don't live or work in London. I used to and it is pretty grim, so I don't blame you. Certainly used to give my hands a good scrub when I got home after using the tube 🤢

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 02/04/2023 00:16

I change my clothes when I get home regardless, but that's because I like being comfy and unrestricted. Bra off, "house" clothes on aaaand breathe. Nothing to do with dirt or where i eat been.

I don't think I've ever done this. Not died from a dirty sofa yet.

No but plenty of people do become ill....

BlackBarbies · 02/04/2023 00:20

I’m black so yes I do. All my friends and family do it too

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/04/2023 00:31

I don't, I do wash my hands though,I always have, not a Covid thing.

FictionalCharacter · 02/04/2023 01:20

I don’t change just because I’ve been on the Tube. I don’t know anyone who does.
What do you mean by filthy? There’s a lot of pollution in towns but the Tube isn’t particularly a filth magnet. There’s a lot of air pollution near roads. But your clothes aren’t soaking up any significant levels of dirt, and what’s on your clothes isn’t harming you. It’s breathing in airborne pollution while you’re there that’s damaging.

This is more about your state of mind and how you feel. It isn’t about public transport and how dirty it is. Changing your clothes 2 or 3 times a day isn’t normal or necessary. I despair sometimes. Some of us are cutting down the amount of electricity and water we use to reduce our impact on the environment. Meanwhile others are doing vast amounts of washing because of an irrational obsession with “dirt”.

Same. Not sure how long you've been on mumsnet but apparently showering daily is extravagant and letting your dog lick your plate is par for the course. Don't get me started on washing chicken, a load of posters linked me to the NHS guidance Confused . It's truly fascinating looking at this other world!

PerfectYear321 · 02/04/2023 01:52

London transport is disgusting. I always feel filthy after spending time there. Did you know you can catch crusted scabies from sitting on a seat after an infected person has? 😩

Germolenequeen · 02/04/2023 01:52

Yes

StellaGibson2022 · 02/04/2023 01:53

Loondoner - yep, change clothes. London is filthy and have a little routine when I get home. However, my parents, also Londoners, dont feel the need.

PerfectYear321 · 02/04/2023 01:55

London seems to have a lot of mice/rats too 😩
I've even seen Rightmove adverts with mousetraps blatantly on show. But nobody bats an eyelid

Tribollite · 02/04/2023 08:11

I live in London, travel on tube and buses.

I always change my clothes when I get in, the seats are filthy and I don't want to bring something like bedbugs home. I once read an article about the explosion of bed bugs in homes around the Piccadilly line, as people were picking them up on the tube from travellers who had come from Heathrow.

Tribollite · 02/04/2023 08:16

Just to add - I don't wash my coat all the time as that just hangs in the hall. But I don't want eg jeans I've worn on tube to come in contact with soft furnishings like sofa or bed.

megletthesecond · 02/04/2023 08:18

Yes. Partly because it's grubby. Partly because I need to change into warm clothes.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/04/2023 08:24

No, because I’m not insane. I do wash my hands, though.
