Mumsnet “norms” that annoy you most

For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

Oh another one…

when someone says “I’ll probably get flamed for this…”

and then says something unbelievably banal

I've done this.

I always think I'll get flamed for that particular viewpoint but I never have been, so I guess it isn't that contentious after all.

And some say

“I’ll probably get flamed”

and then repeat what 99% of posters have already said

I vividly remember the MN 'famous' poster early in 2021 how she was struggling with her mental health not being able to go to her second home for a break.

The thread was deleted by MN after 15 pages with some posters saying "get a grip" and pointing out the privilege of the poster when so many were struggling to pay bills and put food on the table. But many more saying how dreadful it was for her and how her MN input over the years meant she should be considered with sympathy.

When a lot of the public and posters on the site had spent 9 months saying anyone wanting to 'against the rules' for any reason was a complete arsehole for even thinking of it and should fuck off and suffer in their horrible housing situations because 'it's a pandemic'

Yes I remember that thread some posters really do get treated with kid gloves
I remember another much " loved" mumsnetter, who poster,s . ,normally fell.over themselves to.agree with ,name changing ,it was a fairly.obvious name change ,to me but it was interesting to.see the different responses she got because not everyone recognised her.

I'm autistic (undiagnosed).

OrigamiOwls · 01/04/2023 10:23

The idea that living anywhere but London means you are clearly living in a cultural vacuum. The wide eyed posters saying they are thinking of moving but wondering what people who live outside London actually dooooo at the weekend.

All elective c sections are perfect birth experiences. All vaginal births are horrendous and leave women traumatised for life.

Breastfeeding is awful and if you don’t formula feed it’s because you have been brainwashed by society and/or healthcare professionals.

More like if you don't breastfeed you will have an obese, disease ridden baby who doesn't even know who it's mother is.

I don't think I do that. But it would be funny.

Tealknittedjumpers · 01/04/2023 10:24

İf you even give a hint of suggestion of having a preference for a certain way of eating that doesn't fit in with the Mumsnet norm of a roast chicken, huge baguettes slathered with butter and naice ham then you've got an undiagnosed eating disorder. 'No Jane, meat and bread just make me feel bloated.'

Similarly if you prefer not to feed your child jam sandwiches and wotsits for every meal, then you're either

a) a liar,

b) going to damage your child with your aforementioned disordered eating,

or

c) just gloating by rubbing it in the faces of working mums of eleven kids who don't have time to chop a courgette and boil some pasta for two minutes for their little one's lunch, and you can't possibly have a job or more than one child and you should keep your crunchy mum boden lifestyle to yourself.

No I wasn’t on the thread

i read your post about the thread on this thread and was responding directly to what you’d written 🤷‍♀️

Well unless you read it you can't know the context 🤷

Child-haters! What are they even doing on mumsnet, a forum designed for mums first of all! Go and find forums for women who have no desire to have children and take your hatred with you there .

Well said

Does it? Given the repetition it sometimes feels like it's a hard core of around 20 with a handful of DM and Mirror journos thrown in for good measure.

nothing to contribute but this tickled me 😂😂

Indeed.

But doesn’t mean I can’t have a view based on the information you deigned to provide on this thread! 😂

Oh yeah

"My midwife is BULLYING me into BF and making me feel like an inadequate mother for choosing to FF my as yet unborn child."

So what did she do?

"She explained the benefits of BF and gave me a leaflet - the nasty bitch."

GMOOH2023 · 01/04/2023 10:30

The absolute stubborn refusal to understand what posters mean when they talk about "performance parenting".

We all know what it really means, yet there will be numerous posts saying:

"What, you want me to stop talking to my children? OK then."
"Why shouldn't I keep up a conversation with my child in the supermarket trolley?"

Nope, you carry on talking to your children, but just don't do it at a volume more suited to the National Theatre (and slyly check that everyone in the vicinity is listening to what an amaaaaazing parent you are) you aren't, you're a twat

Yes. The millions of 'most controversial opinion'/ 'opinions that would get you cancelled by MN' threads:

Odds on the first post will be:
"I don't like the Kardashians"

Groundbreaking.

It's always been like that. People will claim there's no such thing as 'MN royalty' but it's very apparent as soon as an OG poster posts a comment or has an issue they start a thread about.

I'm not picking at that poster, I don't have any particular opinion about them but it's so stark how differently some of the OG posters are treated when any other poster would be ripped apart.

Villssev · 01/04/2023 10:38

“Mumsnet royalty”

aka as women with far far too much time on their hands in RL and they while away their days tapping away furiously on their phones.

I feel sorry for the poor sods

whumpthereitis · 01/04/2023 10:39

The trope of the trope that everyone is wealthy, simultaneously existing alongside the trope that no one is wealthy and if they say they are they must be lying.

See also: everyone is middle class, whilst also being proudly and solidly working class.

ComeOnNumber100 · 01/04/2023 10:42

When someone is responding to a comment and doesn’t either quote the original post or tag the person they’re replying to and in the time it’s taken to respond there are numerous other replies between the two posts so you sit there thinking ‘is that aimed at me?’

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 01/04/2023 10:43

Medicalising and catastrophising perfectly normal emotions such as sadness, anxiety or anger.

Myneighbourskia · 01/04/2023 10:44

Saying 'please be kind' at the start of a post gets on my tits. You're posting on the world wide Web and the whole point is that people can give you their unvarnished opinions which aren't sugar coated.
