What do you call your grandmother?

I'm using the 'correct' term there, which I don't use, but the reason for asking this is I have heard of her being called "mamar" (not sure of spelling) and I've never heard it. Is it a regional thing?

Both my Polish grandmothers were Babcia
I'm Grandma

Both died before I was born but my maternal grandmother was always referred to as nana and paternal grandmother as Granny.

Paternal grandfather was just Granda and and maternal was Granda Surname.

Notanothernewname · 01/04/2023 06:08

She was always Granny, my great grandmother was Nanny(even though my mum says it belongs to goats just like kids and it was her grandmother). My grandfather was always Grandpa.

I had a Grandma and Granny

My kids have a grandma, my mum, same as her mum. And 2 Nannies. We call the second one "nanny [name]" because she came into their lives second (husbands birth mum) but she was already a nanny to his sisters kids so we stuck with that bit!

Grandma and Granny or Gran.
DD calls my mum Granny. She called DH's mum Nana when she was alive.

Mine were Nanna when they were alive.

Grandma and Nanna. North London and home counties. My cousin called the one I called Grandma 'MarMar' (I don't know how he spelled it but that's what it sounded like). I thought it sounded like a baby shortening, and a bit silly once he was older than about five though.

neighboursmustliveon · 01/04/2023 09:11

Nana for both parents mum and one great gran and the other great grandmother was also nana.

My mum is now nana and mil is granny.

RampantIvy · 01/04/2023 09:11

Mine died in 1971. I called her granny.

jay55 · 01/04/2023 11:31

One was Grandma first name, the other Grandma surname. I don't know why we were so formal with one.
