What do you call your grandmother?

I'm using the 'correct' term there, which I don't use, but the reason for asking this is I have heard of her being called "mamar" (not sure of spelling) and I've never heard it. Is it a regional thing?

I had a Grandma (and Grandad) and a Gran.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/03/2023 20:44

Nan and gran.

My kids have gran and granny.

Wowwellokthen · 31/03/2023 20:45

Sadly my grandparents were all gone by the time I arrived. My parents were the youngest of big families and I am the young of my siblings...both my grandmothers were born in the year 1900! And my grandfathers in 1890 and 1894! That makes me sound ancient! Im in my 40s!

PaigeMatthews · 31/03/2023 20:46

Mine is grandma.
My children call theirs nana and mama.

TeaForMeandThee · 31/03/2023 20:47

Mine were nana surname and nana surname. My mum is also nana to my children and my mil is grandma. I find that nana is a far more affectionate name, grandma is snobby, suits my mil, she chose it 🤣.

clasmummy20 · 31/03/2023 20:50

My mums mum was grandma and my dads mum was gran - NE Scotland.

My mum is grandma and my partners mum is GaGa to my son,

swissrollisntswiss · 31/03/2023 20:52

I have a Nanny (more Nan now we’re getting older) and I had a Grandma on the other side. DS calls both of his Nana which is what they chose.

Toasty280 · 31/03/2023 20:53

Mammar (derbyshire)

Mammar. Very common for grandma to be called mammar round here but I believe it's very much a local thing!

Whereabouts are you? Mammar or mummar or mommor (never seen it written down!) is often used round here - East Midlands.

I called both of mine Grandma Firstname. My son has a ‘granny’ and my mum has made up a name for her grandchildren to call her.

Derby or environs? Loads of my friends called their grandmas Mamar. My mum thought it was common(!) so I had a grandma and a gran. I'm a soft southerner now, so I'm a Grandma.

AnnaMagnani · 31/03/2023 20:56

I had a Mormor. Grandad was Morfar. If she'd been my dad's mum she would have been Farmor and Grandad would be Farfar.

Saves a lot of angst. Meanwhile on the English side it was Nan.

cpphelp · 31/03/2023 21:00

Granny.

AlltheFs · 31/03/2023 21:00

I use Grandma

My DD has a Grandma and a Granny

I work in a city in the East Mids (but I’m not from here) and some of my colleagues use something that sounds like Mamar.

LostInTheColonies · 31/03/2023 21:01

I called both of mine Granny, and Granny (surname) when we talked about them.

DM decided that she wanted to be called Nan because Granny made her feel old. Her choice, but I much prefer Granny! DD's other grandmother was referred to as Grandma.

Quisquam · 31/03/2023 21:01

Nanna - she felt grandma was too “old” for her.

Rockbird · 31/03/2023 21:06

Both of mine were Nanny Surname. My dds have Grandma Firstname for both grandmothers.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 31/03/2023 21:07

I called mine Nan, as did dh. Our kids now have a Grandma (mil) and a Nana (my mum) - names were chosen by our mums.

ChristmasJumpers · 31/03/2023 21:10

We have a grandma, nanna and nannie in our family

YfenniChristie · 31/03/2023 21:11

I had a Mamgu (Welsh) and a Nana (English). For DS my Mam is now Mamgu and my MIL Grandma.

UniversalMamma · 31/03/2023 21:14

Grandma ❤️

Sharkpenis · 31/03/2023 21:16

Dead, rest her soul

Vallmo47 · 31/03/2023 21:16

@AnnaMagnani I love the Scandi way. Mormor = mother’s mum. Morfar = mother’s father. Farmor = father’s mother and farfar = father’s father. No room for confusion, the answer to which side is in the title.

AmoebicSquid · 31/03/2023 21:24

Granny - my mum
Grandma - my mother in law
AnnaGran - my step mum (her name is Anne)

SettlingForANewPassword · 31/03/2023 21:26

Mine- 'Nan and Nanny's husband'. (He was my granddad but was amused at Nanny's husband) My maternal grandparents I never called them anything as things were fraught and we rarely saw them.

DH- Grandmother and Grandfather. He called his parents Mother and Father.

Gunpowder · 31/03/2023 21:27

Mamgu is lovely. Slightly want to be Welsh.
