What do you call your grandmother?

I'm using the 'correct' term there, which I don't use, but the reason for asking this is I have heard of her being called "mamar" (not sure of spelling) and I've never heard it. Is it a regional thing?

I had a Granny and a Grandma. My kids have a Grandma and a Nanny.

thebaneofmylifeisacat · 31/03/2023 18:09

Nan or nanny is very midlands. All the rage in brum :) love it.

maximist · 31/03/2023 18:11

Nanny when we were small, Nan when we were older. My cousins called our shared grandmother Nana, not sure why they were different. My nieces call my mum Nan and their other Nana (first name). We said Nan (surname) to distinguish.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 31/03/2023 18:12

I only had one and she was nanny.

fuzzbearpenguin · 31/03/2023 18:13

Mammar. Very common for grandma to be called mammar round here but I believe it's very much a local thing!

kwetu · 31/03/2023 18:16

Mee-maw & maw-maw seem to be getting more common but we still go with gran/nanna

eyerings · 31/03/2023 18:21

Mine have gone. They were both Grandma to their faces, and to differentiate we used their surnames so Grandma Smith and Grandma Jones for example. My Grandfathers were the same, Grandad Smith and Grandad Jones.

My mum is Grandma to my kids, ex MIL is Nanna (their choice).

If I'm ever lucky enough to have grandchildren I think I'd like to be Granny or Gran!

SquigglePigs · 31/03/2023 18:35

Mine were both Grandma (one abbreviated to Gran when I was a teen). DD has a Grandma and a Granny. Most people I know have similar or Nan/Nanny. Also pronounced "Nan-rrr" depending on accent. A few I know where some or all of the family has non-English heritage use traditional names from their cultures.

Meandfour · 31/03/2023 18:41

My children call their GMs Granny & Nonna

peachgreen · 31/03/2023 18:44

They’re dead, but Grandma and Nanna. DD has a Granny and a Gramma (dead).

I want to be a Nanna ideally as my Nanna was my favourite person.

DGay · 31/03/2023 18:44

NaNa. My granddaughter calls me Grammy. My sister is GG to her grandkids.

peachgreen · 31/03/2023 18:44

I also had a Grandad and a Grandpa and DD has a Grandpa and a Poppa.

Tarkan · 31/03/2023 18:44

Both have passed away now but one was Gran and the other was Granny (then Nana to her great-grandchildren).

heatdeath · 31/03/2023 18:45

Mine were Nain (Welsh) & Granny (Scottish). My children have a Grandma & a Granny.

Vicliz24 · 31/03/2023 18:47

Mine were Nonna and Nana but I'm a Gramma

LighterNights · 31/03/2023 18:48

I had a Nanna and a Gran. DM and MIL are both Grandma, I want to be Granny.

BebbanburgIsMine · 31/03/2023 19:12

They're both long gone now, but my dad's mum was my Granny, and my mum's mum was Gran.

I'm in NE Scotland.

My own DC call my mother Grandma.

Shutupyoutart · 31/03/2023 19:16

Mums mum was nan. My dad's mum has always been grandma

JumpToRecipe · 31/03/2023 19:22

It’s partly regional, partly demographic. I remember a GCSE unseen extract causing absolute chaos in one school where I worked because it featured a ‘nanny’ and understanding the piece hinged on the understanding that this meant paid childcare. The students all thought it meant a grandmother and completely misinterpreted the text.

I only knew one grandmother and called her Grandma. DH had a Nan and I remember MIL telling me that although she loved the woman, ‘Nan’ set her teeth on edge but was long established by multiple grandchildren by the time DH and BIL came along. Both MIL and my DM preferred Grandma so the DC call them Grandma Firstname to distinguish them from each other.

bakewellbride · 31/03/2023 19:23

My MIL is 'mammar' to the grandchildren. It's a northern thing.

EssexMamisoa · 31/03/2023 19:27

Granny. Surprised at how many Gran/Granny’s there are here. Everyone I meet calls their GM nan

thymewaster · 31/03/2023 19:30

My kids have a nanny and a grandma. I had a Nan, nanny & granny
