Very little happening here in SW France. I went to a distant bakery this morning for a change. They now have 2 days where they close due to rising energy costs. The lady there is Russian and likes to practise her English. Bought a lovely pear and almond tartlet and the pastry was very sweet and almost brandysnap like and unbelievably thin. A nice slice of quiche, too. Shortcrust not puff pastry as many do, and no soggy bottom. Might go tomorrow for a peach almond tart.

Tomorrow opens the tax declarations for all income for 2022. I've done my spreadsheet, so will do my return via the impôts website. An example of e-govt that works. And works well. Each départment has a final date and, for some unknown reason, the Corrèze is always the earliest. I was thought they would've varied it, like the school holidays, but no.

Horrid weather which causes galloping nausea-inducing sinusitis.

Not much going on, really.

Echobelly · 13/04/2023 18:35

DS (11) has gone off on a scout camp on narrowboats for 3 nights; I had to get up early to take him but he seemed to go off happily. I hope he'll be OK, he doesn't know many of the kids that well and is one of the younger ones (and not a very mature 11 years at that) but then I had the same worries when he did 5 nights of scout camp last summer, and he had am amazing time then.

Passover is out in about 2 hours - DH, 14yo and I will be ordering pizza!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/04/2023 19:50

Miss, 1/4 tsp? That sounds a lot. 😯
it's funny, when I make my egg nog recipe the amount of nutmeg works, though. Must be the sugar and booze that balance it?
new, the tarts sound delicious!
echo, enjoy your pizza!

Havoc was a bit of a handful at "school" today. Mummy was kept running. 😯Now exhausted and having another latte. Off to the dentist later.

mathanxiety · 13/04/2023 20:15

It's true about the glorious weather we're having here - it's probably 27°C on my deck right now. ZZ I hope you're enjoying Chicago. You picked a good week to visit. Next week will be far more 'seasonal'.

Silkies - What great news after such a long and completely unnecessary heartbreak.

MissC I never realized nutmeg could be grown anywhere in the US. My dad used to sprinkle a little into coffee and also into hot milk. He liked to stir hot milk with a cinnamon stick too.

Despite the heat, I'm baking a bread pudding today, mainly to use up the remains of a baguette. They had no cherries, frozen or fresh, in the supermarket this morning, so I used dried cherries I found in the baking cupboard. The family likes cherries in their bread pudding.

MissConductUS · 13/04/2023 23:07

Welcome, @newtb, and thanks for sharing your bakery and tax filing news. Taxes are due in the US, which has my son very busy in his job as a new accountant. If I may ask, are you a British ex-pat and have the strikes in France affected you much?

Math, your bread pudding sounds fab. We love cherries too. The warehouse club I shop at (BJ's) usually has three-pound bags of the frozen ones, and I put them in my yogurt.

I had a bit of an adventure coming home. It's so hot and dry here we're under a wildfire watch. Sure enough, the end of the street I live on was closed as they were fighting a wildfire and I had to go the long way around to get home. I could see a helicopter carrying water to it, which they no doubt were getting out of the Hudson River. This is going to complicate getting a takeaway for dinner tonight.

They say if you don't like the weather in Chicago, wait twenty minutes.

Zippedydoo123 · 14/04/2023 05:49

Got up early today. Have done my weekly online Asda order already. Exciting or what.

Lemonsandlemonade · 14/04/2023 08:09

Good news Silkie re your DS.

HelenaJustina · 14/04/2023 08:12

But what a sense of achievement Zippedy I got three loads of laundry done yesterday, and a food shop, tidied my wardrobe and cleaned the bathroom. That list is going to carry me through today as well.

MissConductUS · 14/04/2023 14:04

Welcome, @Zippedydoo123, and thanks for sharing your grocery cyber-shopping news. I get a few things monthly from Amazon like cat food and coffee but shop for everything else in person. I like being able to select my own fruit and veg, and see what goodies are in the bakery that day.

I am just a bit excited, having learned that the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has just dropped on Amazon Prime Video. I adore that show, and the fact that it's set in NY is a bonus. Another disturbance in the force happened this morning. As I was getting ready to leave for work, there was a great commotion of the cats running around. One of them had caught a mouse he had been hunting for a week. With the help of DS, we were able to rescue the mouse and put it outside, unharmed.

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/04/2023 16:22

Oh, Miss... you have a much kinder heart than I. We had pest control on speed dial last year and it took 6 months the get rid of the mice that had taken up residence here. We were finding mouse crap everywhere no matter what we did. They side-stepped all traps those wily little so-and-so's. We finally managed to catch and ---- two and the problem stopped. It was shocking the level of poo they left every day. DC was crawling and I was in full mama defence mode thoroughly disgusted and terrified of baby's hands or face getting near it. 👹
Zippedy, I love getting tasks done early, especially when I'm up before anyone else. It's an extra sort of satisfaction.
Helena, Yea! A very productive day for you!

I'm just finishing morning latte with nutmeg and cinnamon. Havoc has eaten and is now onto some warm milk. A bit of peace watching a talk show for a few more minutes before getting ready and taking Havoc to gymnastics. The morning is supposed to be nice with rain later today.

IWanderedLonely · 14/04/2023 19:18

Silkie so pleased you'll soon have your DS back home where he belongs.

Just had a lovely relaxing massage- my treat to myself after a week of juggling work and minding grandchildren.

Rang Dr's again yesterday for my scan results - they haven't been sent/are lost.Hmm

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/04/2023 19:57

Hello you all,

I can feel my fingertips a little. Finished my 12th chemo, CT and tumor markers are ok, so they put me in the "watch and wait" stage, with an option of further chemo when it comes back.

We had to empty our safe deposit box because the bank has to move to another location and cannot offer boxes anymore. The box contained mainly documents, lots of them I put in the shredder other I need to scan first. So I was busy sorting through stuff.

DH works like mad as usual, and has been put on blood pressure medication. They are going to take a long time measurement of is blood pressure next week - he will love it 😀

Spring seems to be near, the street musicians ae walking the streets again and the birds started to sing. Not much green about though.

Now off to read up on what I have missed

MissConductUS · 14/04/2023 20:09

Welcome back, Prok! I'm so glad that the neuropathy is improving. That indicates that it's temporary and should subside now that they are putting your chemo on hold.

Your DH is going to have what is called ambulatory (walking) blood pressure monitoring. It will take a reading once every 15 minutes during the day and once an hour overnight. Hopefully, the cuff inflating won't wake him up. Is he a sound sleeper?

OP posts:
HildaTablet · 14/04/2023 20:10

Really glad to see you back, Prok. We've missed you. Happy to hear that your treatment is over and your markers look satisfactory. I hope your DH doesn’t overdo it.

Silkie thank goodness you’ll have DS back. What an utter, pointless nightmare they’ve put you all through.

I'm just getting over Covid. The bad 'cold' I thought I had was probably Covid although I didn’t test positive for a week and a half, so I've had it for over three weeks now. I’m still getting a very faint positive on lateral flows.

I'm sorry you're feeling poorly, Hilda. Did you test when you first came down with it?

Just as a bit of general advice, if anyone tests positive for covid, you should find out if you can get one of the covid specific antiviral medications. DH and I both took one (molnupiravir), and the difference after 24 hours was fairly dramatic. There's also some evidence that they reduce your risk of long covid.

OP posts:
HildaTablet · 14/04/2023 21:16

Thanks, MissC, I did. I tested every day for 7 days - negative every time. Finally started with a very faint line that just got stronger in successive days, though ironically enough I was probably over the worst of the symptoms then.

Getting the antivirals over here is pretty much a non-starter, unfortunately. It’s virtually impossible to get through the GP on the phone, let alone get an appointment to speak to a doctor. The last one I managed to make was three weeks away from when I finally got through, and that was for a 5-minute phone appointment. As far as I can tell, anti-virals are only available if you’re deemed to be at high risk from Covid. Sadly, nobody cares here any more.

Silkierabbit · 14/04/2023 22:09

Really glad to see you back Prok Hope neuropathy starts to improve, mine took 3 months to go but it did go eventually mostly. Please don't worry about catching up or replying to people just having you here when you are up to it is lovely.

Hilda Sorry about the covid, hope you feel better soon and thanks for good wishes.

Thanks Lemons MissC Iwandered and Math

Very tired atm, sorry if missed anyone, just had Chinese.

HelenaJustina · 15/04/2023 11:40

Hey Prok glad to hear things are okay and that spring is beginning to appear for you.

DC are bored, I’m bored of being a camp counsellor (end of 2 week Easter holiday) and anything I suggest is also boring. So I’m doing the vacuuming instead and ignoring them.

Lemonsandlemonade · 15/04/2023 18:03

Lovely to hear from you Prok.

Back to work Monday for me

Have started potty training DS. Wish I would have waited until the summer but he was pulling his nappy off when he wet and bringing me one when he pooped.

He will use potty at home but not so keen anywhere else!

MissConductUS · 15/04/2023 18:52

Hilda, I'd forgotten how hard it is to access routine care with the NHS. I sent a message to my doctor when I tested positive, and her nurse called me back and sent in the prescription.

It's been ages since we discussed high vis sightings, and I had one this morning. That's my front yard and the road that runs by my house. I live surrounded by a county nature preserve. It's nice that the trees are starting to green up a bit.

Beautiful to have out your front Miss.
I love trees- they make me feel grounded. Love seeing the leaves start to poke through these days.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/04/2023 22:56

I've just finished an afternoon latte and some juicy and crunchy green grapes. Havoc is sleeping (!) bedside me on the couch and I'm watching the first season of ER on Prime. I made a tiramisu for dessert tonight and have just put chicken in the oven for stew. I think I'll make polenta to go with the chicken. I've washed the kitchen and bathroom floors and now am feeling pretty deserving of binge watching tv. It was a busy week with Havoc's activities and two afternoon catch ups with friends I hadn't seen in ages. If I had any wine I might have a glass, but only have a bottle of bubbly and it would just go to waste for one glass. (Horror, I know.)

Lemons, are you following any special method for potty training? I'm sitting Havoc on the training potty after first diaper change in the morning (we're up to a minute!) and have just started doing same once in afternoon. My plan is to build up to a few more sessions at diaper changes then start trying to time them to natural times, ie after a meal/drink. I'm just making this up as I go, so maybe this is a weird approach. 🤷‍♀️
