Sorry to hear about your DC, Helena - hope everything is stable and moving in the right direction. Good wishes to everyone on the thread who’s unwell, hopefully you’re feeling a bit better, Havoc. I often think of Prok with fingers crossed that she’s OK.

We're having lovely weather at the moment though I’ve retreated inside for a rest after doing some gardening. I’ve had a lot of (expensive) physio recently for my ongoing neck and back issues and don’t want to mess things up by doing too much. I have lots of helpful exercises to do every morning now which should keep things moving. I hope!

Our latest bird-watching amusement comes from a pair of grey wagtails (who, despite the name, have a lot of yellow in their plumage) who decided to nest inside an old well at the front of our house. We can see it from our kitchen window as they come popping out unexpectedly. The nest must be incredibly tucked away as we can’t see any sign of it when we peer down the well, but there’s a lot of foliage growing along the sides so it must be in there somewhere. I’m a bit worried about the chicks falling down into the water but I suppose the parents know what they’re doing 🐣🐥

sproutsandparsnips · 28/05/2023 14:36

Hope DC feels better soon Helena.
Also thinking of Prok
I use milk to glaze my mince pies Bizzey
We have pied wagtails in our garden Hilda and they have a baby!
Just been for walk and made pizza dough plus sauce and prepped toppings for later in the pizza oven.

@Silkierabbit

Yes thanks Silkie my cruise to the Fjords was great! Mind you, being me there was a few dramas. Unfortunately I suffer with incontinence, worse when I get out of a seat or am in bed so dutifully packed on suitcase full of pants and pads, only to run out on the Wednesday. There was a small co op type shop on one of our stops but sadly it only had Always (thinner than a wafer ) sanitary towels and Mini Lady Tena. I got them in desperation but honestly I swear these are for Barbie dolls. I had to put 6 at a time on and it still wasn't right which meant I had to avoid night life, so no dancing for me! I thought I had packed enough but nope! Apart from that I enjoyed the trip. Especially keeping the curtains open at night and then taking pictures as we entered the Fjords at 3am!!!

Next time I will fill a suitcase with plenty of blasted pants and pads and comfier sandals. I am usually in comfy trainers so when I got 'gussied' up decided to go for sandals which were wide fit but not the bar across my toes. Ow!

Deathraystare · 28/05/2023 15:16

Forgot to say the weather was like here. Glorious! But could not see what I was taking photos of so have a few 'selfie' style which I did not mean to take. There is a funny one of my face and my hand keeps going up, that was to try and change it to not showing my face. Oh and I took a short video of my feet!!

HildaTablet · 28/05/2023 15:42

Deathray that makes me think of DH's grandmother, who went on lots of cruises and liked to take photos of the friends she made onboard- she would position them picturesquely in a row along the guardrail of the ship, tell them to smile, then spend so long fiddling about with the camera that they invariably got bored and turned round to look out to sea. So all her holiday snaps were of peoples' backs 😂

bizzey · 28/05/2023 16:25

Pie is in the oven !

DS came in as I was trying to fit a rectangular ( ready made) roll of pastry onto a square tin .
He told me to try it the other way round ...I nearly fell for it 🤣🤣!

While trying to add decorative dots of pastry to the top ....I said ...ohh dear
...I will never make MasterChef ( UK cooking competition on TV )

He then went on to tell me that Kitchen Nightmares was starting a new season !
(Another Cooking /restaurant program with Gordon Ramsay that we watch where the food is terrible!🤣)

Cheers mate !

Thanks for the vote of confidence 🤣🤣🤣!

Lemonsandlemonade · 28/05/2023 17:59

Oh no Havoc is there anybody who could have baby Havoc to have a rest today?

I remember being really ill with ds and just handing him to nursery. I slept in bed all day.

MissConductUS · 28/05/2023 19:38

Hilda, sorry to hear about your neck pain. Doesn't the NHS pay for the physio? I went back to my orthopedist a few months ago as I still had some problems in the leg he operated on almost two years ago. He advised me to do more stretching, didn't think it needed physical therapy, but gave me an rx for it. I haven't needed it. The additional stretching has really helped.

mumtobabyhavoc, I'm sorry to hear that you're still poorly. Have you been to the doctor? You could suggest a short course of prednisone. The coughing and congestion suggest that something is causing a lot of inflammation. You might be experiencing an allergic reaction to something.

DD and I went to church this morning, and everyone was pleased to meet her. It's lovely here today, so I've done some work on the deck garden, and DH and DS mowed the lawn. We're going to cook out again tonight.

Lemonsandlemonade · 28/05/2023 19:47

@MissConductUS - the NHS does pay for physio but like with anything NHS related there can be a wait. The GP can give stretches to do at home.

Hilda hope your neck gets better soon.

Have slight tooth discomfort but dentists are like unicorns round these parts.

Went to a car boot sale today got 10 books for £1

Silkierabbit · 28/05/2023 20:58

Just got back from swimming 97 lengths and sauna, steam room and jacuzzi which was nice. Hopefully off to France tomorrow very late if we can get DS to move which is a big if. If not we will stay here and do the usual.

Glad you had a good cruise Death

Hope your DDs job goes well MissC

HildaTablet · 28/05/2023 23:11

Thanks Lemons, it seems to be improving with the exercises. Unfortunately no, physio isn’t easily available on the NHS, MissC, or at least not in the area where I am, the clinical commissioning group here seems very reluctant to fund it. That is, in theory it might be, but it would have to be applied for and referred by the GP, which would take weeks if not months, and then you might not get it, or get only a very few sessions and that would be it. At least this way I get targeted help which is very effective, though it costs £££.

I'm sure it must seem incredible to you but it wasn’t always like this. It’s so utterly depressing that the NHS has become completely hollowed out. I’m a big supporter of the NHS and I could weep to see what it's reduced to now.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/05/2023 23:13

Thanks for the advice and concern everyone. 💖I've got an inhaler I'm using (rx from doctor last covid bout in Feb). This is just a nasty round of it. Feel better for a day then heavy chest, coughing and sinuses fully blocked again. I'll contact doctor if breathing ability dips. I just feel like I need my lungs suctioned to get all the yuk out! 🤣 Havoc's playschool teacher also has covid as did a friend recently. It's so difficult to avoid illness when you've got a little one. I have a touch of exercise induced asthma + allergies and I think I may be a bit more susceptible. 🤷‍♀️

I had an energy burst so did some deep cleaning in bedroom using steam cleaner while Havoc naps which felt good. Am now resting and thinking about dinner.

Silkie, fingers crossed for your jaunt across to France. 🤞
Bizzey, how did your savoury pie turn out? 😋

Lemonsandlemonade · 29/05/2023 06:11

🤞 for France Silkie

Super sorry and sympathetic for all those feeling under the weather. Surgery was yesterday, all went well. Antibiotics pre surgery Miss but doesn’t need them post. Pain management is the big thing. She is a fair redhead and research shows they experience pain differently at population level. It’s been a rough night but don’t want discharge until she ready.

Silkierabbit · 29/05/2023 11:43

Glad your DDs surgery went well Helena Hope they can get pain under control and her back home soon.

Hope you feel better soon Havoc

Beautiful pictures Lemons DD showed me one yesterday of swans and their babies on the river, such a lovely time of year.

Hilda Yes it's very sad to see the impact of lack of money in NHS, saw a service taking vulnerable patients for chemo etc has been scrapped in one region due to lack of funds. Though my cancer surgeon said delays there are going down from lockdown.

Nofireworksneeded · 29/05/2023 12:12

The goslings look really cute Lemons

Need to tell someone that I'm doing really well in resisting the urge to contact my ex and tell him he's being a prat/offer a friendly ear. We were friends for years prior to dating, so would have told him in a previous life.

So sad that no-one else is likely to say anything to him or challenge his behaviour. I know it's not my job anymore after we split last summer, but hate knowing that he's likely to go through crap soon because of it as I still care. #feelingproud

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/05/2023 16:09

So happy to hear it @HelenaJustina
Great news! How are you feeling? Have you Been able to manage any rest yet?

MissConductUS · 29/05/2023 17:16

Welcome, @Nofireworksneeded, and thanks for sharing your ex related news. What behavior is going on that is going to bring trouble?

Helena, I'm so glad that she's out of surgery and recovering. It's good that they'll keep her for a bit.

DD attempted to leave the house very early this morning and set off the alarm, as she didn't know how to disarm it. DH was able to intervene before the police were called. We had it installed shortly after she left for uni, so she's not that familiar with how the panel works.

DD and DS have decide to visit Yale University today, about two hours away from us, so they are having a road trip. Since today is a holiday, I expect they'll see some traffic. It's unknown if they'll be home in time for dinner.

And Floof is still on silly season even though DD is back, banging for a game, it's been a whole 5 minutes since the last one.

IWanderedLonely · 29/05/2023 21:20

Hi all, hope everyone's enjoyed the good weather. Silkies hope you're in France now?
Helena hope your DD is recovering. Interesting about her complexion/hair type and pain studies.
Sorry not to name check anyone else, as usual I'm chasing my own tail.
I am now in bed with an overnight hair mask, so in a turban/towel and moisturising foot treatment socks. I'm sure I look ravishingGrin

Nofireworksneeded · 29/05/2023 21:32

Thank you for your welcome @MissConductUS How was the day trip to Yale? I hope it helped your DD make some choices and steps forward for her further education.

My news...Ex is a head teacher and has been seen on a drunken night out last week kissing a colleague who launched herself on him, and has been sweet on him for years. Whole parent body know.

Whole parent body knew last time after he flirted with me all night then kissed me goodbye over 3 years ago on a different drunken night out.

I care that he's now got a reputation that's cemented, after being seen twice drunk and kissing senior staff.

We finally started dating when I left the school 18 months after our kiss. There is unlikely to be a relationship with her, as whenever she came up in conversation, it was clear he tolerated her and found her a little bit like hard work.

But I know he'll be loving the attention she's lavishing on him each day. I was the only person in his life, even before we kissed, that he would open up to, as I would gently ask the right questions.

She's organised another night out tomorrow, specifically around his diary. Knowing her, she's looking to repeat last week as soon as possible. I'm hoping sober professional him kicks in and he cancels last minute, hoping he shows some of that restraint he had with me during those 18 months he wanted me, but we knew we shouldn't. But I know how much he loves a night out. Which is why I'm desperate to get in touch, as his career is on the line. No one else will talk to him about it, as they see him as the boss. I always saw him as a person first and a boss second.

So I'm cuddling my cat tight, watching old films under a blanket and resisting the urge to be a friend to my old friend.

I'm grateful my cat isn't as active as Floof @Silkierabbit He's being a cuddly bean right now.

MissConductUS · 29/05/2023 21:58

@Nofireworksneeded, that is quite the story of workplace intrigue! Some people do have form for losing their minds when they drink. I hope you can talk some sense into him.

DD and DS have just returned and had a nice visit to Yale. DD has one year left of her undergraduate program and, as far as I know, has no interest in doing postgraduate work at Yale. It's a lovely, historic campus, and I think she just wanted to see it.

I have two cats, one is 11 and the other is 13, so they also are much more sedate than Floof. Silkie is a very devoted and busy cat mum, to be sure.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus
Hope you're OK.

ZZ - Enjoy Chicago! We're settling into summer, with temps in the high 80s expected next week.

I moved most of my plants onto the deck yesterday as overnight temperatures are going to be reliably over 55°F, so it looks like a mixed climate woodland glade/ herb garden again. The hummingbirds are frequent and regular visitors to the feeder.

It's a holiday weekend here and as usual I've spent a good deal of time cleaning and batch cooking.

Helena sending best wishes for a speedy and uncomplicated recovery to DD (and hopefully you can catch up on sleep).

Silkies- Fingers crossed you're on your way to France.

Nofireworksneeded · 29/05/2023 23:00

@MissConductUS I'm keeping well out of it. We no longer have the type of friendship where I can question him so openly and support him as a close friend. Just the occasional message passes between us. Really sad, as I guess I never thought our relationship ending would be the end of our friendship. Naive I know. I'm trusting that sober him sees that the danger of going out tomorrow isn't worth it after what happened last time.

I'm glad your family had a good time at Yale. TV seems to show Yale as a beautiful campus, so I imagine she had a great time. Great 1:1 time with each other too. Does DD have any idea what she would like to do when her studies finish?

My cat is young but has always been cuddly. I put it down to him being a rescue. He's also currently an indoor cat for the next few weeks, as I have a neighbour who continues to feed him, despite my requests not to. She even had the gall to have a go at me twice when I traced him on the £120 tracker I bought because he keeps going in her house... She doesn't have a cat flap, so is letting him in the house. I'm not an unkind person, but she is really horrible. Kept telling me to bugger off and she can do whatever she likes with my cat in her house.

MissConductUS · 30/05/2023 00:21

NoFire, let's hope your friend realizes how he stepped in it previously. It was a nice day out for the kids, and Yale is beautiful. It's very old by American standards. And they had lunch at a fairly famous pizza place while there (Frank Pepe's, if you're curious). Are you in the UK?

She is studying neuroscience and data science, and I don't think she really knows what she wants to do when she graduates. I hope she works for a few years. I doubt she'll have trouble finding a job. We're pretty tapped out after paying for her and her brother's undergraduate studies.
